1 C onoció Joab hijo de Sarvia que el corazón del rey se inclinaba por Absalón,

Now Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king's heart was toward Absalom.

2 p or lo que mandó a traer una mujer astuta de Tecoa, y le dijo: «Te ruego que finjas estar de duelo y te vistas ropas de luto; no te unjas con óleo, sino preséntate como una mujer que hace mucho tiempo está de duelo por algún muerto.

And Joab sent to Tekoah, and fetched thence a wise woman, and said unto her, I pray thee, feign thyself to be a mourner, and put on now mourning apparel, and anoint not thyself with oil, but be as a woman that had a long time mourned for the dead:

3 L uego te presentarás al rey y le dirás de esta manera.» Y le explicó Joab lo que debía decir.

And come to the king, and speak on this manner unto him. So Joab put the words in her mouth.

4 E ntró, pues, aquella mujer de Tecoa al rey, y postrándose sobre su rostro en tierra, hizo una reverencia, y dijo: —¡Socórreme, oh rey!

And when the woman of Tekoah spake to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, and did obeisance, and said, Help, O king.

5 — ¿Qué tienes? —le dijo el rey. Ella respondió: —Yo a la verdad soy una mujer viuda; mi marido ha muerto.

And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, I am indeed a widow woman, and mine husband is dead.

6 T u sierva tenía dos hijos. Los dos riñeron en el campo, y como no había quien los separara, uno hirió al otro y lo mató.

And thy handmaid had two sons, and they two strove together in the field, and there was none to part them, but the one smote the other, and slew him.

7 Y ahora toda la familia se ha levantado contra tu sierva, diciendo: “Entrega al asesino de su hermano, para que lo hagamos morir por la vida del hermano a quien él mató, y matemos también al heredero.” Así apagarán el ascua que me ha quedado, y dejarán a mi marido sin nombre ni descendencia sobre la tierra.

And, behold, the whole family is risen against thine handmaid, and they said, Deliver him that smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he slew; and we will destroy the heir also: and so they shall quench my coal which is left, and shall not leave to my husband neither name nor remainder upon the earth.

8 E ntonces el rey dijo a la mujer: —Vete a tu casa, y yo daré órdenes con respecto a ti.

And the king said unto the woman, Go to thine house, and I will give charge concerning thee.

9 L a mujer de Tecoa dijo al rey: —¡Rey y señor mío, que caiga la culpa sobre mí y sobre la casa de mi padre!, pero que el rey y su trono queden sin culpa.

And the woman of Tekoah said unto the king, My lord, O king, the iniquity be on me, and on my father's house: and the king and his throne be guiltless.

10 E l rey respondió: —Al que hable contra ti, tráelo ante mí, y no te tocará más.

And the king said, Whoever saith ought unto thee, bring him to me, and he shall not touch thee any more.

11 D ijo ella entonces: —Te ruego, oh rey, que te acuerdes de Jehová, tu Dios, para que el vengador de la sangre no aumente el daño y no destruya a mi hijo. Él respondió: —¡Vive Jehová, que no caerá en tierra ni un cabello de la cabeza de tu hijo!

Then said she, I pray thee, let the king remember the Lord thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer the revengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they destroy my son. And he said, As the Lord liveth, there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth.

12 L a mujer siguió diciendo: —Te ruego que permitas a tu sierva decir algo a mi señor, el rey. —Habla —respondió el rey.

Then the woman said, Let thine handmaid, I pray thee, speak one word unto my lord the king. And he said, Say on.

13 L a mujer añadió: —¿Por qué, pues, has pensado tú cosa semejante contra el pueblo de Dios? Porque diciendo el rey estas cosas se confiesa culpable él mismo, por cuanto el rey no deja volver a su desterrado.

And the woman said, Wherefore then hast thou thought such a thing against the people of God? for the king doth speak this thing as one which is faulty, in that the king doth not fetch home again his banished.

14 T odos de cierto morimos y somos como agua derramada en tierra que no puede volver a recogerse. Ni Dios quita la vida, sino que provee medios para que el desterrado no siga alejado de él.

For we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither doth God respect any person: yet doth he devise means, that his banished be not expelled from him.

15 S i yo he venido ahora para decir esto al rey, mi señor, es porque el pueblo me ha atemorizado. Y tu sierva pensó: “Hablaré ahora al rey; quizá haga lo que su sierva le diga,

Now therefore that I am come to speak of this thing unto my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid: and thy handmaid said, I will now speak unto the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his handmaid.

16 p ues el rey me oirá y librará a su sierva de manos del hombre que quiere extirparme a mí, junto con mi hijo, de la heredad de Dios.”

For the king will hear, to deliver his handmaid out of the hand of the man that would destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God.

17 T u sierva dice pues: “Sea ahora de consuelo la respuesta de mi señor, el rey, pues mi señor, el rey, es como un ángel de Dios para discernir entre lo bueno y lo malo. Y que Jehová, tu Dios, sea contigo.”

Then thine handmaid said, The word of my lord the king shall now be comfortable: for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad: therefore the Lord thy God will be with thee.

18 E ntonces David respondió a la mujer: —Te ruego que no me ocultes nada de lo que yo te pregunte. —Hable mi señor, el rey —dijo la mujer.

Then the king answered and said unto the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing that I shall ask thee. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speak.

19 E l rey preguntó: —¿No está metida la mano de Joab en todas estas cosas? La mujer respondió: —¡Vive tu alma, rey señor mío, que no se aparta ni a derecha ni a izquierda todo lo que mi señor el rey ha hablado!; porque fue tu siervo Joab quien me mandó, y él puso en boca de tu sierva todas estas palabras.

And the king said, Is not the hand of Joab with thee in all this? And the woman answered and said, As thy soul liveth, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from ought that my lord the king hath spoken: for thy servant Joab, he bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of thine handmaid:

20 P ara mudar el aspecto de las cosas, Joab, tu siervo, ha hecho esto. Pero mi señor es sabio, con la sabiduría de un ángel de Dios, para conocer lo que hay en la tierra.

To fetch about this form of speech hath thy servant Joab done this thing: and my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.

21 L uego el rey dijo a Joab: —Mira, he decidido esto: vete y haz volver al joven Absalón.

And the king said unto Joab, Behold now, I have done this thing: go therefore, bring the young man Absalom again.

22 J oab se postró en tierra sobre su rostro, hizo una reverencia, y después que bendijo al rey, dijo: —Hoy ha entendido tu siervo: he hallado gracia a tus ojos, rey y señor mío, pues el rey ha hecho lo que su siervo ha dicho.

And Joab fell to the ground on his face, and bowed himself, and thanked the king: and Joab said, To day thy servant knoweth that I have found grace in thy sight, my lord, O king, in that the king hath fulfilled the request of his servant.

23 S e levantó luego Joab, fue a Gesur, y trajo a Absalón a Jerusalén.

So Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.

24 P ero el rey dijo: «Que se vaya a su casa y no vea mi rostro.» Absalón volvió a su casa y no se presentó ante el rey.

And the king said, Let him turn to his own house, and let him not see my face. So Absalom returned to his own house, and saw not the king's face.

25 N o había en todo Israel ninguno tan alabado por su hermosura como Absalón; desde la planta de su pie hasta la coronilla no había en él defecto.

But in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.

26 C uando se cortaba el cabello, lo cual hacía al fin de cada año, pues le causaba molestia —por eso se lo cortaba—, pesaba el cabello de su cabeza doscientos siclos, según el peso real.

And when he polled his head, (for it was at every year's end that he polled it: because the hair was heavy on him, therefore he polled it:) he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels after the king's weight.

27 A Absalón le nacieron tres hijos y una hija, que se llamaba Tamar y fue una mujer de hermoso semblante.

And unto Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a fair countenance.

28 E stuvo Absalón por espacio de dos años en Jerusalén sin presentarse ante el rey.

So Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem, and saw not the king's face.

29 L lamó Absalón a Joab para enviarlo al rey, pero él no quiso venir. Todavía lo llamó una segunda vez, pero tampoco quiso venir.

Therefore Absalom sent for Joab, to have sent him to the king; but he would not come to him: and when he sent again the second time, he would not come.

30 E ntonces dijo a sus siervos: —Mirad, el campo de Joab está junto al mío, y tiene allí cebada; id y prendedle fuego. Y los siervos de Absalón prendieron fuego al campo.

Therefore he said unto his servants, See, Joab's field is near mine, and he hath barley there; go and set it on fire. And Absalom's servants set the field on fire.

31 E ntonces se levantó Joab, vino a casa de Absalón, y le dijo: —¿Por qué han prendido fuego tus siervos a mi campo?

Then Joab arose, and came to Absalom unto his house, and said unto him, Wherefore have thy servants set my field on fire?

32 A bsalón le respondió: —Te he mandado a decir que vinieras acá, con el fin de enviarte al rey para decirle: “¿Para qué vine de Gesur? Mejor me fuera estar aún allá. Ahora deseo ver el rostro del rey; si hay pecado en mí, máteme.”

And Absalom answered Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king's face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me.

33 F ue, pues, Joab a ver al rey, y se lo hizo saber. Entonces llamó a Absalón, el cual se presentó ante el rey y se postró rostro en tierra delante de él. Y el rey besó a Absalón.

So Joab came to the king, and told him: and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king: and the king kissed Absalom.
