1 A nd Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchijah, heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken unto all the people, saying,

Y Sefatías, hijo de Matán, Gedalías, hijo de Pasur, Jucal, hijo de Selemías, y Pasur, hijo de Malquías, oyeron las palabras que Jeremías hablaba a todo el pueblo:

2 T hus saith Jehovah: He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence; but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live; and he shall have his life for a prey, and shall live.

“Así dice el Señor: ‘El que se quede en esta ciudad morirá a espada, de hambre o de pestilencia, pero el que se pase a los Caldeos, vivirá y tendrá su vida por botín y seguirá viviendo.’

3 T hus saith Jehovah: This city shall certainly be given into the hand of the king of Babylon's army, and he shall take it.

Así dice el Señor: ‘Ciertamente esta ciudad será entregada en manos del ejército del rey de Babilonia, y él la tomará.’”

4 A nd the princes said unto the king, Let this man, we pray thee, be put to death; for why should he weaken the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking to them according to these words? for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.

Entonces dijeron los oficiales al rey: “Den muerte ahora a este hombre, porque él desanima a los hombres de guerra que quedan en esta ciudad y a todo el pueblo diciéndoles tales palabras. Este hombre no busca el bien de este pueblo, sino el mal.”

5 A nd king Zedekiah said, Behold, he is in your hand; for the king is not he that can do a thing against you.

El rey Sedequías dijo: “El está en sus manos; pues el rey nada puede hacer contra ustedes.”

6 T hen they took Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchijah the son of Hammelech, which was in the court of the guard, and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire; and Jeremiah sank in the mire.

Entonces ellos tomaron a Jeremías, y bajándolo con cuerdas lo echaron en la cisterna de Malaquías, hijo del rey, que había en el patio de la guardia. En la cisterna no había agua, sino lodo, así que Jeremías se hundió en el lodo.

7 A nd Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon—now the king was sitting in the gate of Benjamin,

Ebed Melec el Etíope, eunuco del palacio del rey, oyó que habían echado a Jeremías en la cisterna. Estando el rey sentado a la Puerta de Benjamín,

8 — and Ebed-melech went forth out of the king's house, and spoke to the king, saying,

salió Ebed Melec del palacio real y habló al rey y le dijo:

9 M y lord, O king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to the prophet Jeremiah, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he will die by reason of the famine in the place where he is; for there is no more bread in the city.

“Oh rey, mi señor, estos hombres han obrado mal en todo lo que han hecho al profeta Jeremías echándolo en la cisterna. El morirá donde está a causa del hambre, porque no hay más pan en la ciudad.”

10 A nd the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die.

Entonces el rey ordenó al etíope Ebed Melec: “Toma bajo tu mando tres hombres de aquí, y saca al profeta Jeremías de la cisterna antes que muera.”

11 A nd Ebed-melech took the men under his order, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took thence old shreds and worn-out clothes, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah.

Ebed Melec tomó a los hombres bajo su mando, entró en el palacio del rey al lugar debajo del cuarto del tesoro y tomó de allí ropas raídas y trapos viejos, y con sogas los bajó a Jeremías en la cisterna.

12 A nd Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, Put, I pray, old shreds and rags under thine armholes under the cords. And Jeremiah did so.

Y el etíope Ebed Melec dijo a Jeremías: “Ponte ahora estas ropas raídas y trapos bajo tus brazos, debajo de las sogas”; y así lo hizo Jeremías.

13 A nd they drew up Jeremiah with cords, and brought him up out of the dungeon; and Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

Tiraron de Jeremías con las sogas y lo subieron de la cisterna. Y Jeremías se quedó en el patio de la guardia. El Rey Consulta a Jeremías

14 A nd king Zedekiah sent and took the prophet Jeremiah unto him, into the third entry that is in the house of Jehovah; and the king said unto Jeremiah, I will ask thee a thing: hide nothing from me.

Entonces el rey Sedequías mandó que le trajeran al profeta Jeremías a la entrada tercera que había en la casa del Señor; y el rey le dijo a Jeremías: “Voy a preguntarte una cosa; no me ocultes nada.”

15 A nd Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah, If I declare unto thee, wilt thou not certainly put me to death? and if I give thee counsel, thou wilt not hearken unto me.

Y Jeremías dijo a Sedequías: “Si se la hago saber a usted, ¿no es cierto que me matará? Además si le doy un consejo, no me escuchará.”

16 A nd king Zedekiah swore secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, Jehovah liveth, that made us this soul, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life.

Pero el rey Sedequías le juró en secreto a Jeremías: “Vive el Señor, que nos dio esta vida, que ciertamente no te mataré ni te entregaré en manos de esos hombres que buscan tu vida.”

17 A nd Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah, Thus saith Jehovah the God of hosts, the God of Israel: If thou wilt freely go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, and thy house.

Entonces Jeremías dijo a Sedequías: “Así dice el Señor, Dios de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: ‘Si en verdad usted se pasa a los oficiales del rey de Babilonia, entonces vivirá, y esta ciudad no será incendiada, y usted y su casa vivirán.

18 B ut if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand.

Pero si usted no se pasa a los oficiales del rey de Babilonia, entonces esta ciudad será entregada en manos de los Caldeos; y ellos la incendiarán y usted no escapará de su mano.’”

19 A nd king Zedekiah said unto Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that have deserted to the Chaldeans, lest they give me over into their hand, and they mock me.

Entonces el rey Sedequías respondió a Jeremías: “Tengo temor de los Judíos que se han pasado a los Caldeos, no sea que me entreguen en sus manos y me maltraten.”

20 A nd Jeremiah said, They shall not give over. Hearken, I beseech thee, unto the voice of Jehovah, in that which I speak unto thee; so shall it be well unto thee, and thy soul shall live.

Pero Jeremías dijo: “No lo entregarán. Le ruego que escuche la voz del Señor en lo que le digo, y le irá bien y vivirá.

21 B ut if thou refuse to go forth, this is the word which Jehovah hath shewn me:

Pero si sigue usted rehusando pasarse, ésta es la palabra que el Señor me ha mostrado:

22 B ehold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah's house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon's princes; and they shall say, Thy familiar friends have set thee on, and have prevailed over thee; thy feet are sunk in the mire, they are turned away back.

‘Todas las mujeres que quedan en el palacio del rey de Judá, serán llevadas a los oficiales del rey de Babilonia, y ellas dirán: “Te han engañado y han prevalecido contra ti; Tus buenos amigos, Mientras tus pies estaban hundidos en el lodo, Se volvieron atrás.”

23 A nd they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Chaldeans, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand; for thou shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon, and thou shalt cause this city to be burned with fire.

‘Todas sus mujeres y sus hijos serán llevados a los Caldeos. Tampoco usted escapará de sus manos, sino que será apresado por la mano del rey de Babilonia, y esta ciudad será incendiada.’”

24 A nd Zedekiah said unto Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die.

Entonces Sedequías dijo a Jeremías: “Que nadie sepa de estas palabras, y no morirás.

25 A nd if the princes hear that I have talked with thee, and they come unto thee, and say unto thee, Declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king, hide it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; and what hath the king said unto thee?

Pero si los oficiales se enteran de que he hablado contigo, y vienen a ti y te dicen: ‘Dinos ahora lo que dijiste al rey y lo que el rey te dijo, no nos lo ocultes, y no te mataremos,’

26 t hen thou shalt say unto them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan's house, to die there.

tú les dirás: ‘Presentaba al rey mi súplica de que no me hiciera volver a la casa de Jonatán, a morir allí.’”

27 — And all the princes came to Jeremiah, and asked him; and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. And they withdrew quietly from him; for the matter was not reported.

Luego vinieron todos los oficiales a Jeremías y lo interrogaron. Y él les informó conforme a todas estas palabras que el rey le había ordenado; y no volvieron a preguntarle, ya que de la conversación nadie había oído nada.

28 A nd Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was taken.

Así Jeremías quedó en el patio de la guardia hasta el día en que Jerusalén fue tomada.
