1 R espondió Elifaz temanita, y dijo:

And Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

2 ¿ Traerá el hombre provecho a Dios? Al contrario, para sí mismo es provechoso el hombre sabio.

Can a man be profitable to God? surely it is unto himself that the wise man is profitable.

3 ¿ Tiene contentamiento el Omnipotente en que tú seas justificado, O provecho de que tú hagas perfectos tus caminos?

Is it any pleasure to the Almighty if thou art righteous? And is it gain that thou makest thy ways perfect?

4 ¿ Acaso te castiga, O viene a juicio contigo, a causa de tu piedad?

Will he reason with thee for fear of thee? Will he enter with thee into judgment?

5 P or cierto tu malicia es grande, Y tus maldades no tienen fin.

Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities without end?

6 P orque sacaste prenda a tus hermanos sin causa, Y despojaste de sus ropas a los desnudos.

For thou hast taken a pledge of thy brother for nought, and stripped off the clothing of the naked.

7 N o diste de beber agua al cansado, Y detuviste el pan al hambriento.

Thou hast not given water to the fainting to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.

8 P ero el hombre pudiente tuvo la tierra, Y habitó en ella el distinguido.

But the powerful man, he had the land; and the man of high rank dwelt in it.

9 A las viudas enviaste vacías, Y los brazos de los huérfanos fueron quebrados.

Widows hast thou sent empty away, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

10 P or tanto, hay lazos alrededor de ti, Y te turba espanto repentino;

Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;

11 O tinieblas, para que no veas, Y abundancia de agua te cubre.

Or darkness, that thou canst not see, and floods of waters cover thee.

12 ¿ No está Dios en la altura de los cielos? Mira lo encumbrado de las estrellas, cuán elevadas están.

Is not +God in the height of the heavens? And behold the summit of the stars: how exalted are they!

13 ¿ Y dirás tú: ¿Qué sabe Dios? ¿Cómo juzgará a través de la oscuridad?

And thou sayest, What doth God know? will he judge through the dark cloud?

14 L as nubes le rodearon, y no ve; Y por el circuito del cielo se pasea.

Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh on the vault of the heavens.

15 ¿ Quieres tú seguir la senda antigua Que pisaron los hombres perversos,

Dost thou mark the ancient path which wicked men have trodden?

16 L os cuales fueron cortados antes de tiempo, Cuyo fundamento fue como un río derramado?

Who were carried off before the time, whose foundation was overflowed with a flood;

17 D ecían a Dios: Apártate de nosotros. ¿Y qué les había hecho el Omnipotente?

Who said unto God, Depart from us! and what could the Almighty do to them?

18 L es había colmado de bienes sus casas. Pero sea el consejo de ellos lejos de mí.

Yet he filled their houses with good. But the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

19 V erán los justos y se gozarán; Y el inocente los escarnecerá, diciendo:

The righteous see it, and are glad; and the innocent laugh them to scorn:

20 F ueron destruidos nuestros adversarios, Y el fuego consumió lo que de ellos quedó.

Is not he who rose against us destroyed, and doth not the fire consume his residue?

21 V uelve ahora en amistad con él, y tendrás paz; Y por ello te vendrá bien.

Reconcile thyself now with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.

22 T oma ahora la ley de su boca, Y pon sus palabras en tu corazón.

Receive, I pray thee, instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in thy heart.

23 S i te volvieres al Omnipotente, serás edificado; Alejarás de tu tienda la aflicción;

If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up. If thou remove unrighteousness far from thy tents,

24 T endrás más oro que tierra, Y como piedras de arroyos oro de Ofir;

And put the precious ore with the dust, and Ophir among the stones of the torrents,

25 E l Todopoderoso será tu defensa, Y tendrás plata en abundancia.

Then the Almighty will be thy precious ore, and silver heaped up unto thee;

26 P orque entonces te deleitarás en el Omnipotente, Y alzarás a Dios tu rostro.

Yea, then shalt thou delight thyself in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto +God:

27 O rarás a él, y él te oirá; Y tú pagarás tus votos.

Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he will hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows;

28 D eterminarás asimismo una cosa, y te será firme, Y sobre tus caminos resplandecerá luz.

And thou shalt decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee; and light shall shine upon thy ways.

29 C uando fueren abatidos, dirás tú: Enaltecimiento habrá; Y Dios salvará al humilde de ojos.

When they are made low, then thou shalt say, Rise up! and he shall save him that is of downcast eyes.

30 E l libertará al inocente, Y por la limpieza de tus manos éste será librado.

him that is not innocent shall he deliver; yea, he shall be delivered by the pureness of thy hands.
