1 D a antwortete Eliphas von Theman und sprach:

And Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

2 K ann denn ein Mann Gottes etwas nützen? Nur sich selber nützt ein Kluger.

Can a man be profitable to God? surely it is unto himself that the wise man is profitable.

3 M einst du, dem Allmächtigen liege daran, daß du gerecht seist? Was hilft's ihm, wenn deine Wege ohne Tadel sind?

Is it any pleasure to the Almighty if thou art righteous? And is it gain that thou makest thy ways perfect?

4 M einst du wegen deiner Gottesfurcht strafe er dich und gehe mit dir ins Gericht?

Will he reason with thee for fear of thee? Will he enter with thee into judgment?

5 N ein, deine Bosheit ist zu groß, und deiner Missetaten ist kein Ende.

Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities without end?

6 D u hast etwa deinem Bruder ein Pfand genommen ohne Ursache; du hast den Nackten die Kleider ausgezogen;

For thou hast taken a pledge of thy brother for nought, and stripped off the clothing of the naked.

7 d u hast die Müden nicht getränkt mit Wasser und hast dem Hungrigen dein Brot versagt;

Thou hast not given water to the fainting to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.

8 d u hast Gewalt im Lande geübt und prächtig darin gegessen;

But the powerful man, he had the land; and the man of high rank dwelt in it.

9 d ie Witwen hast du leer lassen gehen und die Arme der Waisen zerbrochen.

Widows hast thou sent empty away, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

10 D arum bist du mit Stricken umgeben, und Furcht hat dich plötzlich erschreckt.

Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;

11 S olltest du denn nicht die Finsternis sehen und die Wasserflut, die dich bedeckt?

Or darkness, that thou canst not see, and floods of waters cover thee.

12 I st nicht Gott hoch droben im Himmel? Siehe, die Sterne an droben in der Höhe!

Is not +God in the height of the heavens? And behold the summit of the stars: how exalted are they!

13 U nd du sprichst: "Was weiß Gott? Sollte er, was im Dunkeln ist, richten können?

And thou sayest, What doth God know? will he judge through the dark cloud?

14 D ie Wolken sind die Vordecke, und er sieht nicht; er wandelt im Umkreis des Himmels."

Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh on the vault of the heavens.

15 A chtest du wohl auf den Weg, darin vorzeiten die Ungerechten gegangen sind?

Dost thou mark the ancient path which wicked men have trodden?

16 d ie vergangen sind, ehe denn es Zeit war, und das Wasser hat ihren Grund weggewaschen;

Who were carried off before the time, whose foundation was overflowed with a flood;

17 d ie zu Gott sprachen: "Hebe dich von uns! was sollte der Allmächtige uns tun können?"

Who said unto God, Depart from us! and what could the Almighty do to them?

18 s o er doch ihr Haus mit Gütern füllte. Aber der Gottlosen Rat sei ferne von mir.

Yet he filled their houses with good. But the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

19 D ie Gerechten werden es sehen und sich freuen, und der Unschuldige wird ihrer spotten:

The righteous see it, and are glad; and the innocent laugh them to scorn:

20 " Fürwahr, unser Widersacher ist verschwunden; und sein Übriggelassenes hat das Feuer verzehrt."

Is not he who rose against us destroyed, and doth not the fire consume his residue?

21 S o vertrage dich nun mit ihm und habe Frieden; daraus wird dir viel Gutes kommen.

Reconcile thyself now with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.

22 H öre das Gesetz von seinem Munde und fasse seine Reden in dein Herz.

Receive, I pray thee, instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in thy heart.

23 W irst du dich bekehren zu dem Allmächtigen, so wirst du aufgebaut werden. Tue nur Unrecht ferne hinweg von deiner Hütte

If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up. If thou remove unrighteousness far from thy tents,

24 u nd wirf in den Staub dein Gold und zu den Steinen der Bäche das Ophirgold,

And put the precious ore with the dust, and Ophir among the stones of the torrents,

25 s o wird der Allmächtige dein Gold sein und wie Silber, das dir zugehäuft wird.

Then the Almighty will be thy precious ore, and silver heaped up unto thee;

26 D ann wirst du Lust haben an dem Allmächtigen und dein Antlitz zu Gott aufheben.

Yea, then shalt thou delight thyself in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto +God:

27 S o wirst du ihn bitten, und er wird dich hören, und wirst dein Gelübde bezahlen.

Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he will hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows;

28 W as du wirst vornehmen, wird er dir lassen gelingen; und das Licht wird auf deinem Wege scheinen.

And thou shalt decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee; and light shall shine upon thy ways.

29 D enn die sich demütigen, die erhöht er; und wer seine Augen niederschlägt, der wird genesen.

When they are made low, then thou shalt say, Rise up! and he shall save him that is of downcast eyes.

30 A uch der nicht unschuldig war wird errettet werden; er wird aber errettet um deiner Hände Reinigkeit willen.

him that is not innocent shall he deliver; yea, he shall be delivered by the pureness of thy hands.
