Now in the fifteenth year of the government of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod tetrarch of Galilee, and Philip his brother tetrarch of Ituraea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,

2 d a Hannas und Kaiphas Hohepriester waren: da geschah der Befehl Gottes zu Johannes, des Zacharias Sohn, in der Wüste.

in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, word of God came upon John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness.

3 U nd er kam in alle Gegend um den Jordan und predigte die Taufe der Buße zur Vergebung Sünden,

And he came into all the district round the Jordan, preaching baptism of repentance for remission of sins,

4 w ie geschrieben steht in dem Buch der Reden Jesaja's, des Propheten, der da sagt: "Es ist eine Stimme eines Predigers in der Wüste: Bereitet den Weg des HERRN und macht seine Steige richtig!

as it is written in book of words of Esaias the prophet: Voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare ye the way of Lord, make straight his paths.

5 A lle Täler sollen voll werden, und alle Berge und Hügel erniedrigt werden; und was krumm ist, soll richtig werden, und was uneben ist, soll schlichter Weg werden.

Every gorge shall be filled up, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low, and the crooked shall become a straight, and the rough places smooth ways,

6 U nd alles Fleisch wird den Heiland Gottes sehen."

and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

7 D a sprach er zu dem Volk, das hinausging, daß sich von ihm Taufen ließe: Ihr Otterngezüchte, wer hat denn euch gewiesen, daß ihr dem zukünftigen Zorn entrinnen werdet?

He said therefore to the crowds which went out to be baptised by him, Offspring of vipers, who has forewarned you to flee from the coming wrath?

8 S ehet zu, tut rechtschaffene Früchte der Buße und nehmt euch nicht vor, zu sagen: Wir haben Abraham zum Vater. Denn ich sage euch: Gott kann dem Abraham aus diesen Steinen Kinder erwecken.

Produce therefore fruits worthy of repentance; and begin not to say in yourselves, We have Abraham for father, for I say unto you that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham.

9 E s ist schon die Axt den Bäumen an die Wurzel gelegt; welcher Baum nicht gute Frucht bringt, wird abgehauen und in das Feuer geworfen.

And already also the axe is applied to the root of the trees; every tree therefore not producing good fruit is cut down and cast into fire.

10 U nd das Volk fragte ihn und sprach: Was sollen wir denn tun?

And the crowds asked him saying, What should we do then?

11 E r antwortete aber und sprach zu ihnen: Wer zwei Röcke hat, der gebe dem, der keinen hat; und wer Speise hat, der tue auch also.

And he answering says to them, He that has two body-coats, let him give to him that has none; and he that has food, let him do likewise.

12 E s kamen auch die Zöllner, daß sie sich taufen ließen, und sprachen zu ihm: Meister, was sollen denn wir tun?

And tax-gatherers came also to be baptised, and they said to him, Teacher, what should we do?

13 E r sprach zu ihnen: Fordert nicht mehr, denn gesetzt ist.

And he said to them, Take no more than what is appointed to you.

14 D a fragten ihn auch die Kriegsleute und sprachen: Was sollen denn wir tun? Und er sprach zu ihnen: Tut niemand Gewalt noch Unrecht und laßt euch genügen an eurem Solde.

And persons engaged in military service also asked him saying, And we, what should we do? And he said to them, Oppress no one, nor accuse falsely, and be satisfied with your pay.

15 A ls aber das Volk im Wahn war und dachten in ihren Herzen von Johannes, ob er vielleicht Christus wäre,

But as the people were in expectation, and all were reasoning in their hearts concerning John whether he might be the Christ,

16 a ntwortete Johannes und sprach zu allen: Ich taufe euch mit Wasser; es kommt aber ein Stärkerer nach mir, dem ich nicht genugsam bin, daß ich die Riemen seiner Schuhe auflöse; der wird euch mit dem heiligen Geist und mit Feuer taufen.

John answered all, saying, I indeed baptise you with water, but the mightier than I is coming, the thong of whose sandals I am not fit to unloose; he shall baptise you with Holy Spirit and fire;

17 I n seiner Hand ist die Wurfschaufel, und er wird seine Tenne fegen und wird den Weizen in seine Scheuer sammeln, und die Spreu wird er mit dem ewigen Feuer verbrennen.

whose winnowing-fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his threshing-floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

18 U nd viel anderes mehr ermahnte er das Volk und verkündigte ihnen das Heil.

Exhorting then many other things also he announced glad tidings to the people.

19 H erodes aber, der Vierfürst, da er von ihm gestraft ward um der Herodias willen, seines Bruders Weib, und um alles Übels willen, das Herodes tat,

But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him as to Herodias, the wife of his brother, and as to all the wicked things which Herod had done,

20 l egte er über das alles Johannes gefangen.

added this also to all, that he shut up John in prison.

21 U nd es begab sich, da sich alles Volk taufen ließ und Jesus auch getauft war und betete, daß sich der Himmel auftat

And it came to pass, all the people having been baptised, and Jesus having been baptised and praying, that the heaven was opened,

22 u nd der heilige Geist fuhr hernieder in leiblicher Gestalt auf ihn wie eine Taube und eine Stimme kam aus dem Himmel, die sprach: Du bist mein lieber Sohn, an dem ich Wohlgefallen habe.

and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form as a dove upon him; and a voice came out of heaven, Thou art my beloved Son, in thee I have found my delight.

23 U nd Jesus war, da er anfing, ungefähr dreißig Jahre alt, und ward gehalten für einen Sohn Josephs, welcher war ein Sohn Eli's,

And Jesus himself was beginning to be about thirty years old; being as was supposed son of Joseph; of Eli,
