1 H öret, was der HERR zu euch vom Hause Israel redet.

Hear the word that Jehovah speaketh unto you, house of Israel.

2 S o spricht der HERR: Ihr sollt nicht nach der Heiden Weise lernen und sollt euch nicht fürchten vor den Zeichen des Himmels, wie die Heiden sich fürchten.

Thus saith Jehovah: Learn not the way of the nations, and be not dismayed at the signs of the heavens; for the nations are dismayed at them.

3 D enn der Heiden Satzungen sind lauter Nichts. Denn sie hauen im Walde einen Baum, und der Werkmeister macht Götter mit dem Beil

For the statutes of the peoples are vanity; for a tree cut out of the forest, worked with a chisel by the hands of the artizan;

4 u nd schmückt sie mit Silber und Gold und heftet sie mit Nägeln und Hämmern, daß sie nicht umfallen.

they deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.

5 E s sind ja nichts als überzogene Säulen. Sie können nicht reden; so muß man sie auch tragen, denn sie können nicht gehen. Darum sollt ihr euch nicht vor ihnen fürchten: denn sie können weder helfen noch Schaden tun.

They are as a palm-column of turned work, and they speak not; they are carried, for they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.

6 A ber dir, HERR, ist niemand gleich; du bist groß, und dein Name ist groß, und kannst es mit der Tat beweisen.

There is none like unto thee, Jehovah; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.

7 W er sollte dich nicht fürchten, du König der Heiden? Dir sollte man gehorchen; denn es ist unter allen Weisen der Heiden und in allen Königreichen deinesgleichen nicht.

Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? For to thee doth it appertain; for among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee.

8 S ie sind allzumal Narren und Toren; denn ein Holz muß ja ein nichtiger Gottesdienst sein.

But they are one and all senseless and foolish; the teaching of vanities is a stock.

9 S ilbernes Blech bringt man aus Tharsis, Gold aus Uphas, durch den Meister und Goldschmied zugerichtet; blauen und roten Purpur zieht man ihm an, und ist alles der Weisen Werk.

Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the artizan and of the hands of the founder; blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of skilful.

10 A ber der HERR ist ein rechter Gott, ein lebendiger Gott, ein ewiger König. Vor seinem Zorn bebt die Erde, und die Heiden können sein Drohen nicht ertragen.

But Jehovah Elohim is truth; he is the living God, and the King of eternity. At his wrath the earth trembleth, and the nations cannot abide his indignation.

11 S o sprecht nun zu ihnen also: Die Götter, die Himmel und Erde nicht gemacht haben, müssen vertilgt werden von der Erde und unter dem Himmel.

Thus shall ye say unto them: The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, these shall perish from the earth, and from under the heavens.

12 E r hat aber die Erde durch seine Kraft gemacht und den Weltkreis bereitet durch seine Weisheit und den Himmel ausgebreitet durch seinen Verstand.

He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his understanding.

13 W enn er donnert, so ist des Wassers die Menge unter dem Himmel, und er zieht die Nebel auf vom Ende der Erde; er macht die Blitze im Regen und läßt den Wind kommen aus seinen Vorratskammern.

When he uttereth his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the end of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasuries.

14 A lle Menschen sind Narren mit ihrer Kunst, und alle Goldschmiede bestehen mit Schanden mit ihren Bildern; denn ihre Götzen sind Trügerei und haben kein Leben.

Every man is become brutish, bereft of knowledge; every founder is put to shame by the graven image, for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.

15 E s ist eitel Nichts und ein verführerisches Werk; sie müssen umkommen, wenn sie heimgesucht werden.

They are vanity, a work of delusion: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.

16 A ber also ist der nicht, der Jakobs Schatz ist; sondern er ist's, der alles geschaffen hat, und Israel ist sein Erbteil. Er heißt HERR Zebaoth.

The portion of Jacob is not like them; for it is he that hath formed all, and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: Jehovah of hosts is his name.

17 T ue deinen Kram weg aus dem Lande, die du wohnest in der Feste.

Gather up thy baggage out of the land, O inhabitress of the fortress.

18 D enn so spricht der HERR: Siehe, ich will die Einwohner des Landes auf diesmal wegschleudern und will sie ängsten, daß sie es fühlen sollen.

For thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I will this time sling out the inhabitants of the land, and will distress them, that they may be found.

19 A ch mein Jammer und mein Herzeleid! Ich denke aber: Es ist meine Plage; ich muß sie leiden.

Woe is me, for my wound! My stroke is hard to heal, and I had said, Yea, this is grief, and I will bear it.

20 M eine Hütte ist zerstört, und alle meine Seile sind zerrissen. Meine Kinder sind von mir gegangen und nicht mehr da. Niemand ist, der meine Hütte wieder aufrichte und mein Gezelt aufschlage.

My tent is despoiled, and all my cords are broken; my children are gone forth from me, and they are not; there is none to stretch forth my tent any more, and to set up my curtains.

21 D enn die Hirten sind zu Narren geworden und fragen nach dem HERRN nicht; darum können sie auch nichts Rechtes lehren, und ihre ganze Herde ist zerstreut.

For the shepherds are become brutish, and have not sought Jehovah; therefore have they not acted wisely, and all their flock is scattered.

22 S iehe, es kommt ein Geschrei daher und ein großes Beben aus dem Lande von Mitternacht, daß die Städte Juda's verwüstet und zur Wohnung der Schakale werden sollen.

The voice of a rumour! Behold, it cometh, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah a desolation, a dwelling-place of jackals.

23 I ch weiß, HERR, daß des Menschen Tun steht nicht in seiner Gewalt, und steht in niemands Macht, wie er wandle oder seinen Gang richte.

I know, Jehovah, that the way of man is not his own; it is not in a man that walketh to direct his steps.

24 Z üchtige mich, HERR, doch mit Maßen und nicht in deinem Grimm, auf daß du mich nicht aufreibest.

Jehovah, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.

25 S chütte aber deinen Zorn über die Heiden, so dich nicht kennen, und über die Geschlechter, so deinen Namen nicht anrufen. Denn sie haben Jakob aufgefressen und verschlungen; sie haben ihn weggeräumt und seine Wohnung verwüstet.

Pour out thy fury upon the nations that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name; for they have eaten up Jacob, yea, they have eaten him up and consumed him, and have laid waste his dwelling-place.
