1 U nd da Jethro, der Priester in Midian, Mose's Schwiegervater, hörte alles, was Gott getan hatte mit Mose und seinem Volk Israel, daß der HERR Israel hätte aus Ägypten geführt,

And Jethro the priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, heard of all that God had done to Moses, and to Israel his people; that Jehovah had brought Israel out of Egypt.

2 n ahm er Zippora, Mose's Weib, die er hatte zurückgesandt,

And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her back,

3 s amt ihren zwei Söhnen, deren einer hieß Gerson (denn er sprach: Ich bin ein Gast geworden in fremdem Lande)

and her two sons, of whom the name of the one was Gershom—for he said, I have been a sojourner in a foreign land,

4 u nd der andere Elieser (denn er sprach: Der Gott meines Vaters ist meine Hilfe gewesen und hat mich errettet von dem Schwert Pharaos).

—and the name of the other, Eliezer—For the God of my father has been my help, and has delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh.

5 D a nun Jethro, Mose's Schwiegervater, und seine Söhne und sein Weib zu ihm kamen in die Wüste, an den Berg Gottes, da er sich gelagert hatte,

And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, came to Moses with his sons and his wife into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mountain of God.

6 l ieß er Mose sagen: Ich, Jethro, dein Schwiegervater, bin zu dir gekommen und dein Weib und ihre beiden Söhne mit ihr.

And he sent word to Moses: I, thy father-in-law Jethro, am come to thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.

7 D a ging Mose hinaus ihm entgegen und neigte sich vor ihm und küßte ihn. Und da sie sich untereinander gegrüßt hatten, gingen sie in die Hütte.

And Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and did obeisance, and kissed him; and they asked each other their welfare, and went into the tent.

8 D a erzählte Mose seinem Schwiegervater alles, was der HERR dem Pharao und den Ägyptern getan hatte Israels halben, und alle die Mühsal, die ihnen auf den Wege begegnet war, und daß sie der HERR errettet hätte.

And Moses told his father-in-law all that Jehovah had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake; all the trouble that had befallen them on the way, and Jehovah had delivered them.

9 J ethro aber freute sich all des Guten, das der HERR Israel getan hatte, daß er sie errettet hatte von der Ägypter Hand.

And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness that Jehovah had done to Israel; that he had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians.

10 U nd Jethro sprach: Gelobt sei der HERR, der euch errettet hat von der Ägypter und Pharaos Hand, der weiß sein Volk von der Ägypter Hand zu erretten.

And Jethro said, Blessed be Jehovah, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh; who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

11 N un weiß ich, daß der HERR größer ist denn alle Götter, darum daß sie Hochmut an ihnen geübt haben.

Now I know that Jehovah is greater than all gods; for in the thing in which they acted haughtily above them.

12 U nd Jethro, Mose's Schwiegervater, brachte Gott ein Brandopfer mit Dankopfern. Da kamen Aaron und alle Ältesten in Israel, mit Mose's Schwiegervater das Brot zu essen vor Gott.

And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took a burnt-offering and sacrifices for God; and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father-in-law in the presence of God.

13 D es andern Morgens setzte sich Mose, das Volk zu richten; und das Volk stand um Mose her von Morgen an bis zu Abend.

And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people; and the people stood by Moses from the morning to the evening.

14 D a aber sein Schwiegervater sah alles, was er dem Volke tat, sprach er: Was ist's, das du tust mit dem Volk? Warum sitzt du allein, und alles Volk steht um dich her von Morgen an bis zu Abend?

And Moses' father-in-law saw all that he did with the people, and said, What is this thing which thou art doing with the people? why dost thou sit alone, and all the people are standing by thee from morning to evening?

15 M ose antwortete ihm: Das Volk kommt zu mir, Gott um Rat zu fragen.

And Moses said to his father-in-law, Because the people come to me to enquire of God.

16 D enn wo sie was zu schaffen haben, kommen sie zu mir, daß ich richte zwischen einem jeglichen und seinem Nächsten und zeige ihnen Gottes Rechte und seine Gesetze.

When they have a matter, they come to me, and I judge between one and another; and I make known the statutes of God, and his laws.

17 S ein Schwiegervater sprach zu ihm: Es ist nicht gut, was du tust.

And Moses' father-in-law said to him, The thing that thou art doing is not good.

18 D u machst dich zu müde, dazu das Volk auch, das mit dir ist. Das Geschäft ist dir zu schwer; du kannst's allein nicht ausrichten.

Thou wilt be quite exhausted, both thou and this people that is with thee; for the thing is too heavy for thee: thou canst not perform it alone.

19 A ber gehorche meiner Stimme; ich will dir raten, und Gott wird mit dir sein. Pflege du des Volks vor Gott und bringe die Geschäfte vor Gott

Hearken now to my voice: I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee. Be thou for the people with God, and bring the matters before God;

20 u nd stelle ihnen Rechte und Gesetze, daß du sie lehrst den Weg, darin sie wandeln, und die Werke, die sie tun sollen.

and teach them the statutes and the laws, and make known to them the way in which they must walk, and the work that they must do.

21 S iehe dich aber um unter allem Volk nach redlichen Leuten, die Gott fürchten, wahrhaftig und dem Geiz feind sind; die setze über sie, etliche über tausend, über hundert, über fünfzig und über zehn,

But do thou provide among all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place over them, chiefs of thousands, chiefs of hundreds, chiefs of fifties, and chiefs of tens,

22 d aß sie das Volk allezeit richten; wo aber eine große Sache ist, daß sie dieselbe an dich bringen, und sie alle geringen Sachen richten. So wird dir's leichter werden, und sie werden mit dir tragen.

that they may judge the people at all times; and it shall be they shall bring to thee every great matter, and that they shall judge every small matter, and they shall lighten on thee, and they shall bear with thee.

23 W irst du das tun, so kannst du ausrichten, was Gott dir gebietet, und all dies Volk kann mit Frieden an seinen Ort kommen.

If thou do this thing, and God command thee, thou wilt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.

24 M ose gehorchte seines Schwiegervaters Wort und tat alles, was er sagte,

And Moses hearkened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said.

25 u nd erwählte redliche Leute aus ganz Israel und machte sie zu Häuptern über das Volk, etliche über tausend, über hundert, über fünfzig und über zehn,

And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, chiefs of thousands, chiefs of hundreds, chiefs of fifties, and chiefs of tens.

26 d aß sie das Volk allezeit richteten; was aber schwere Sachen wären, zu Mose brächten, und die kleinen Sachen selber richteten.

And they judged the people at all times: the hard matters they brought to Moses, but every small matter they judged.

27 A lso ließ Mose seinen Schwiegervater in sein Land ziehen.

And Moses sent away his father-in-law, and he departed into his land.
