1 O yó Jetro sacerdote de Madián, suegro de Moisés, todas las cosas que Dios había hecho con Moisés, y con Israel su pueblo, y cómo Jehová había sacado a Israel de Egipto.

And Jethro the priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, heard of all that God had done to Moses, and to Israel his people; that Jehovah had brought Israel out of Egypt.

2 Y tomó Jetro suegro de Moisés a Séfora la mujer de Moisés, después que él la envió,

And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her back,

3 y a sus dos hijos; el uno se llamaba Gersón, porque dijo: Forastero he sido en tierra ajena;

and her two sons, of whom the name of the one was Gershom—for he said, I have been a sojourner in a foreign land,

4 y el otro se llamaba Eliezer, porque dijo: El Dios de mi padre me ayudó, y me libró de la espada de Faraón.

—and the name of the other, Eliezer—For the God of my father has been my help, and has delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh.

5 Y Jetro el suegro de Moisés, con los hijos y la mujer de éste, vino a Moisés en el desierto, donde estaba acampado junto al monte de Dios;

And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, came to Moses with his sons and his wife into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mountain of God.

6 y dijo a Moisés: Yo tu suegro Jetro vengo a ti, con tu mujer, y sus dos hijos con ella.

And he sent word to Moses: I, thy father-in-law Jethro, am come to thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.

7 Y Moisés salió a recibir a su suegro, y se inclinó, y lo besó; y se preguntaron el uno al otro cómo estaban, y vinieron a la tienda.

And Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and did obeisance, and kissed him; and they asked each other their welfare, and went into the tent.

8 Y Moisés contó a su suegro todas las cosas que Jehová había hecho a Faraón y a los egipcios por amor de Israel, y todo el trabajo que habían pasado en el camino, y cómo los había librado Jehová.

And Moses told his father-in-law all that Jehovah had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake; all the trouble that had befallen them on the way, and Jehovah had delivered them.

9 Y se alegró Jetro de todo el bien que Jehová había hecho a Israel, al haberlo librado de mano de los egipcios.

And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness that Jehovah had done to Israel; that he had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians.

10 Y Jetro dijo: Bendito sea Jehová, que os libró de mano de los egipcios, y de la mano de Faraón, y que libró al pueblo de la mano de los egipcios.

And Jethro said, Blessed be Jehovah, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh; who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

11 A hora conozco que Jehová es más grande que todos los dioses; porque en lo que se ensoberbecieron prevaleció contra ellos.

Now I know that Jehovah is greater than all gods; for in the thing in which they acted haughtily above them.

12 Y tomó Jetro, suegro de Moisés, holocaustos y sacrificios para Dios; y vino Aarón y todos los ancianos de Israel para comer con el suegro de Moisés delante de Dios. Nombramiento de jueces (Dt. 1. 9-18)

And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took a burnt-offering and sacrifices for God; and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father-in-law in the presence of God.

13 A conteció que al día siguiente se sentó Moisés a juzgar al pueblo; y el pueblo estuvo delante de Moisés desde la mañana hasta la tarde.

And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people; and the people stood by Moses from the morning to the evening.

14 V iendo el suegro de Moisés todo lo que él hacía con el pueblo, dijo: ¿Qué es esto que haces tú con el pueblo? ¿Por qué te sientas tú solo, y todo el pueblo está delante de ti desde la mañana hasta la tarde?

And Moses' father-in-law saw all that he did with the people, and said, What is this thing which thou art doing with the people? why dost thou sit alone, and all the people are standing by thee from morning to evening?

15 Y Moisés respondió a su suegro: Porque el pueblo viene a mí para consultar a Dios.

And Moses said to his father-in-law, Because the people come to me to enquire of God.

16 C uando tienen asuntos, vienen a mí; y yo juzgo entre el uno y el otro, y declaro las ordenanzas de Dios y sus leyes.

When they have a matter, they come to me, and I judge between one and another; and I make known the statutes of God, and his laws.

17 E ntonces el suegro de Moisés le dijo: No está bien lo que haces.

And Moses' father-in-law said to him, The thing that thou art doing is not good.

18 D esfallecerás del todo, tú, y también este pueblo que está contigo; porque el trabajo es demasiado pesado para ti; no podrás hacerlo tú solo.

Thou wilt be quite exhausted, both thou and this people that is with thee; for the thing is too heavy for thee: thou canst not perform it alone.

19 O ye ahora mi voz; yo te aconsejaré, y Dios estará contigo. Está tú por el pueblo delante de Dios, y somete tú los asuntos a Dios.

Hearken now to my voice: I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee. Be thou for the people with God, and bring the matters before God;

20 Y enseña a ellos las ordenanzas y las leyes, y muéstrales el camino por donde deben andar, y lo que han de hacer.

and teach them the statutes and the laws, and make known to them the way in which they must walk, and the work that they must do.

21 A demás escoge tú de entre todo el pueblo varones de virtud, temerosos de Dios, varones de verdad, que aborrezcan la avaricia; y ponlos sobre el pueblo por jefes de millares, de centenas, de cincuenta y de diez.

But do thou provide among all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place over them, chiefs of thousands, chiefs of hundreds, chiefs of fifties, and chiefs of tens,

22 E llos juzgarán al pueblo en todo tiempo; y todo asunto grave lo traerán a ti, y ellos juzgarán todo asunto pequeño. Así aliviarás la carga de sobre ti, y la llevarán ellos contigo.

that they may judge the people at all times; and it shall be they shall bring to thee every great matter, and that they shall judge every small matter, and they shall lighten on thee, and they shall bear with thee.

23 S i esto hicieres, y Dios te lo mandare, tú podrás sostenerte, y también todo este pueblo irá en paz a su lugar.

If thou do this thing, and God command thee, thou wilt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.

24 Y oyó Moisés la voz de su suegro, e hizo todo lo que dijo.

And Moses hearkened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said.

25 E scogió Moisés varones de virtud de entre todo Israel, y los puso por jefes sobre el pueblo, sobre mil, sobre ciento, sobre cincuenta, y sobre diez.

And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, chiefs of thousands, chiefs of hundreds, chiefs of fifties, and chiefs of tens.

26 Y juzgaban al pueblo en todo tiempo; el asunto difícil lo traían a Moisés, y ellos juzgaban todo asunto pequeño.

And they judged the people at all times: the hard matters they brought to Moses, but every small matter they judged.

27 Y despidió Moisés a su suegro, y éste se fue a su tierra.

And Moses sent away his father-in-law, and he departed into his land.
