Paul, prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timotheus the brother, to Philemon the beloved and our fellow-workman,

2 u nd Appia, der Lieben, und Archippus, unserm Streitgenossen, und der Gemeinde in deinem Hause:

and to the sister Apphia and to Archippus our fellow-soldier, and to the assembly which in thine house.

3 G nade sei mit euch und Friede von Gott, unserm Vater, und dem HERRN Jesus Christus!

Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and Lord Jesus Christ.

4 I ch danke meinem Gott und gedenke dein allezeit in meinem Gebet,

I thank my God, always making mention of thee at my prayers,

5 n achdem ich höre von der Liebe und dem Glauben, welche du hast an den HERRN Jesus und gegen alle Heiligen,

hearing of thy love and the faith which thou hast towards the Lord Jesus, and towards all the saints,

6 d aß der Glaube, den wir miteinander haben, in dir kräftig werde durch Erkenntnis alles des Guten, das ihr habt in Christo Jesu.

in such sort that thy participation in the faith should become operative in the acknowledgment of every good thing which is in us towards Christ.

7 W ir haben aber große Freude und Trost an deiner Liebe; denn die Herzen der Heiligen sind erquickt durch dich, lieber Bruder.

For we have great thankfulness and encouragement through thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother.

8 D arum, wiewohl ich habe große Freudigkeit in Christo, dir zu gebieten, was dir ziemt,

Wherefore having much boldness in Christ to enjoin thee what is fitting,

9 s o will ich doch um der Liebe willen nur vermahnen, der ich ein solcher bin, nämlich ein alter Paulus, nun aber auch ein Gebundener Jesu Christi.

for love's sake I rather exhort, being such a one as Paul the aged, and now also prisoner of Jesus Christ.

10 S o ermahne ich dich um meines Sohnes willen, Onesimus, den ich gezeugt habe in meinen Banden,

I exhort thee for my child, whom I have begotten in bonds, Onesimus,

11 w elcher weiland dir unnütz, nun aber dir und mir wohl nütze ist; den habe ich wiedergesandt.

once unserviceable to thee, but now serviceable to thee and to me:

12 D u aber wollest ihn, das ist mein eigen Herz, annehmen.

whom I have sent back to thee: him, that is, my bowels:

13 D enn ich wollte ihn bei mir behalten, daß er mir an deiner Statt diente in den Banden des Evangeliums;

whom I was desirous of keeping with myself, that for thee he might minister to me in the bonds of the glad tidings;

14 a ber ohne deinen Willen wollte ich nichts tun, auf daß dein Gutes nicht wäre genötigt, sondern freiwillig.

but I have wished to do nothing without thy mind, that thy good might not be as of necessity but of willingness:

15 V ielleicht aber ist er darum eine Zeitlang von dir gekommen, daß du ihn ewig wieder hättest,

for perhaps for this reason he has been separated for a time, that thou mightest possess him fully for ever;

16 n un nicht mehr als einen Knecht, sondern mehr denn einen Knecht, als einen lieben Bruder, sonderlich mir, wie viel mehr aber dir, beides, nach dem Fleisch und in dem HERRN.

not any longer as a bondman, but above a bondman, a beloved brother, specially to me, and how much rather to thee, both in flesh and in Lord?

17 S o du nun mich hältst für deinen Genossen, so wollest du ihn als mich selbst annehmen.

If therefore thou holdest me to be a partner, receive him as me;

18 S o er aber dir etwas Schaden getan hat oder schuldig ist, das rechne mir zu.

but if he have wronged thee anything or owe anything, put this to my account.

19 I ch, Paulus, habe es geschrieben mit meiner Hand: Ich will's bezahlen. Ich schweige, daß du dich selbst mir schuldig bist.

I Paul have written with mine own hand; I will repay: that I say not to thee that thou owest even thine own self also to me.

20 J a, lieber Bruder, gönne mir, daß ich mich an dir ergötze in dem HERRN; erquicke mein Herz in dem HERRN.

Yea, brother, I would have profit of thee in Lord: refresh my bowels in Christ.

21 I ch habe aus Zuversicht deines Gehorsams dir geschrieben; und ich weiß, du wirst mehr tun, denn ich sage.

Being confident of thine obedience, I have written to thee, knowing that thou wilt do even more than I say.

22 D aneben bereite mir die Herberge; denn ich hoffe, daß ich durch euer Gebet euch geschenkt werde.

But withal prepare me also a lodging; for I hope that I shall be granted to you through your prayers.

23 E s grüßt dich Epaphras, mein Mitgefangener in Christo Jesu,

Epaphras salutes thee, my fellow-prisoner in Christ Jesus;

24 M arkus, Aristarchus, Demas, Lukas, meine Gehilfen.
