1 N ow it came to pass in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them.

No décimo quarto ano do reinado de Ezequias, Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria, atacou todas as cidades fortificadas de Judá e se apossou delas.

2 T hen the king of Assyria sent the Rabshakeh with a great army from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. And he stood by the aqueduct from the upper pool, on the highway to the Fuller’s Field.

Então, de Láquis, o rei da Assíria enviou seu comandante com um grande exército a Jerusalém, ao rei Ezequias. Quando o comandante parou no aqueduto do açude superior, na estrada que leva ao campo do Lavandeiro,

o administrador do palácio, Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, o secretário Sebna e o arquivista real Joá, filho de Asafe, foram ao encontro dele.

4 T hen the Rabshakeh said to them, “Say now to Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: “What confidence is this in which you trust?

E o comandante de campo falou: “Digam a Ezequias: “Assim diz o grande rei, o rei da Assíria: ‘Em que você está baseando essa sua confiança?

5 I say you speak of having plans and power for war; but they are mere words. Now in whom do you trust, that you rebel against me?

Você diz que tem estratégia e força militar; mas não passam de palavras vãs. Em quem você confia, para rebelar-se contra mim?

6 L ook! You are trusting in the staff of this broken reed, Egypt, on which if a man leans, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.

Pois veja! Agora você está confiando no Egito, aquela cana esmagada, que fura a mão de quem nela se apóia! Assim é o faraó, o rei do Egito, para todos os que dele dependem.

7 “ But if you say to me, ‘We trust in the Lord our God,’ is it not He whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and said to Judah and Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar’?”’

E se você me disser: “No Senhor, o nosso Deus, confiamos”; não são dele os altos e os altares que Ezequias removeu, dizendo a Judá e a Jerusalém: “Vocês devem adorar aqui, diante deste altar”?’

8 N ow therefore, I urge you, give a pledge to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses—if you are able on your part to put riders on them!

“Faça, agora, um acordo com o meu senhor, o rei da Assíria: Eu lhe darei dois mil cavalos — se você puder pôr cavaleiros neles!

9 H ow then will you repel one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put your trust in Egypt for chariots and horsemen?

Como então você poderá repelir um só dos menores oficiais do meu senhor, confiando que o Egito lhe dará carros e cavaleiros?

10 H ave I now come up without the Lord against this land to destroy it? The Lord said to me, ‘Go up against this land, and destroy it.’”

Além disso, você pensa que vim atacar e destruir esta nação sem o Senhor ? O próprio Senhor me mandou marchar contra esta nação e destruí-la”.

11 T hen Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it; and do not speak to us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people who are on the wall.”

Então Eliaquim, Sebna e Joá disseram ao comandante: “Por favor, fala com os teus servos em aramaico, pois entendemos essa língua. Não fales em hebraico, pois assim o povo que está sobre os muros entenderá”.

12 B ut the Rabshakeh said, “Has my master sent me to your master and to you to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat and drink their own waste with you?”

O comandante, porém, respondeu: “Pensam que o meu senhor mandou-me dizer estas coisas só a vocês e ao seu senhor, e não aos homens que estão sentados no muro? Pois, como vocês, eles terão que comer as próprias fezes e beber a própria urina!”

13 T hen the Rabshakeh stood and called out with a loud voice in Hebrew, and said, “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!

E o comandante se pôs em pé e falou alto, em hebraico: “Ouçam as palavras do grande rei, do rei da Assíria!

14 T hus says the king: ‘Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you;

Não deixem que Ezequias os engane. Ele não poderá livrá-los!

15 n or let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord, saying, “The Lord will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.”’

Não deixem Ezequias convencê-los a confiar no Senhor, quando diz: ‘Certamente o Senhor nos livrará; esta cidade não será entregue nas mãos do rei da Assíria’.

16 D o not listen to Hezekiah; for thus says the king of Assyria: ‘Make peace with me by a present and come out to me; and every one of you eat from his own vine and every one from his own fig tree, and every one of you drink the waters of his own cistern;

“Não dêem atenção a Ezequias. Assim diz o rei da Assíria: ‘Venham fazer as pazes comigo. Então cada um de vocês comerá de sua própria videira e de sua própria figueira, e beberá água de sua própria cisterna,

17 u ntil I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.

até que eu os leve a uma terra como a de vocês: terra de cereal e de vinho, terra de pão e de vinhas.

18 B eware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, “The Lord will deliver us.” Has any one of the gods of the nations delivered its land from the hand of the king of Assyria?

“‘Não deixem que Ezequias os engane quando diz que o Senhor os livrará. Alguma vez o deus de qualquer nação livrou sua terra das mãos do rei da Assíria?

19 W here are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Indeed, have they delivered Samaria from my hand?

Onde estão os deuses de Hamate e de Arpade? Onde estão os deuses de Sefarvaim? Eles livraram Samaria das minhas mãos?

20 W ho among all the gods of these lands have delivered their countries from my hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem from my hand?’”

Quem dentre todos os deuses dessas nações conseguiu livrar a sua terra? Como então o Senhor poderá livrar Jerusalém das minhas mãos?’”

21 B ut they held their peace and answered him not a word; for the king’s commandment was, “Do not answer him.”

Mas o povo ficou em silêncio e nada respondeu, porque o rei dera esta ordem: “Não lhe respondam”.

22 T hen Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of the Rabshakeh.

Então o administrador do palácio, Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, o secretário Sebna e o arquivista Joá, filho de Asafe, com as vestes rasgadas, foram contar a Ezequias o que dissera o comandante.
