1 E lihu riprese a parlare e disse:

Then Elihu continued and said,

2 « Ascoltate, o saggi, le mie parole, e voi, dotti, prestatemi orecchio!

“Hear my words, you wise men, And listen to me, you who know.

3 P oiché l'orecchio esamina le parole, come il palato assapora i cibi.

“For the ear tests words As the palate tastes food.

4 S cegliamo noi stessi ciò che è giusto, riconosciamo fra noi ciò che è buono.

“Let us choose for ourselves what is right; Let us know among ourselves what is good.

5 P oiché Giobbe ha detto: Sono giusto ma Dio ha tolto via la mia giustizia.

“For Job has said, ‘ I am righteous, But God has taken away my right;

6 D ovrei mentire contro la mia giustizia? La mia ferita è incurabile, benché sia senza peccato".

Should I lie concerning my right? My wound is incurable, though I am without transgression.’

7 C hi è come Giobbe, che beve la derisione come l'acqua,

“What man is like Job, Who drinks up derision like water,

8 c he cammina in compagnia dei malfattori e vada assieme ai malvagi?

Who goes in company with the workers of iniquity, And walks with wicked men?

9 P oiché ha detto: "Non giova nulla all'uomo riporre il proprio diletto in DIO

“For he has said, ‘ It profits a man nothing When he is pleased with God.’

10 A scoltatemi dunque, o uomini di senno! Lungi da Dio l'iniquità e dall'Onnipotente la malvagità!

“Therefore, listen to me, you men of understanding. Far be it from God to do wickedness, And from the Almighty to do wrong.

11 P oiché egli rende all'uomo secondo le sue opere e fa trovare a ognuno il salario della sua condotta.

“For He pays a man according to his work, And makes him find it according to his way.

12 C ertamente Dio non compie il male e l'Onnipotente non sovverte la giustizia.

“Surely, God will not act wickedly, And the Almighty will not pervert justice.

13 C hi gli ha affidato la cura della terra, o chi lo ha costituito sul mondo intero?

“Who gave Him authority over the earth? And who has laid on Him the whole world?

14 S e Dio dovesse decidere in cuor suo di ritirare a sé il suo Spirito e il suo soffio,

“If He should determine to do so, If He should gather to Himself His spirit and His breath,

15 o gni carne perirebbe assieme, e l'uomo ritornerebbe in polvere,

All flesh would perish together, And man would return to dust.

16 S e hai intendimento, ascolta questo, porgi orecchio a ciò che ti dico.

“But if you have understanding, hear this; Listen to the sound of my words.

17 U no che odia la giustizia potrebbe governare? Osi tu condannare il Giusto, il Potente?

“Shall one who hates justice rule? And will you condemn the righteous mighty One,

18 L ui che dice a un re, "Sei spregevole" e ai principi: "Siete malvagi".

Who says to a king, ‘Worthless one,’ To nobles, ‘Wicked ones’;

19 M a egli non usa alcuna parzialità con i grandi né considera il ricco piú del povero, perché sono tutti opera delle sue mani.

Who shows no partiality to princes Nor regards the rich above the poor, For they all are the work of His hands?

20 I n un attimo, essi muoiono nel cuore della notte la gente è scossa e scompare, i potenti son portati via senza mano d'uomo.

“In a moment they die, and at midnight People are shaken and pass away, And the mighty are taken away without a hand.

21 P oiché egli tiene gli occhi sulle vie dell'uomo, e vede tutti i suoi passi.

“For His eyes are upon the ways of a man, And He sees all his steps.

22 N on vi sono tenebre né ombra di morte, dove possano nascondersi i malfattori.

“There is no darkness or deep shadow Where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

23 D io infatti non ha bisogno di osservare a lungo un uomo prima di farlo comparire davanti a sé in giudizio.

“For He does not need to consider a man further, That he should go before God in judgment.

24 E gli fiacca i potenti senza fare inchiesta e ne mette altri al loro posto.

“He breaks in pieces mighty men without inquiry, And sets others in their place.

25 P oiché conosce le loro opere, li abbatte nella notte e sono distrutti;

“Therefore He knows their works, And He overthrows them in the night, And they are crushed.

26 l i colpisce come gente malvagia alla vista di tutti.

“He strikes them like the wicked In a public place,

27 p erché si sono allontanati da lui senza prestare attenzione alle sue vie,

Because they turned aside from following Him, And had no regard for any of His ways;

28 f ino a far giungere a lui il grido a del povero, perché egli ode il grido degli afflitti.

So that they caused the cry of the poor to come to Him, And that He might hear the cry of the afflicted—

29 Q uando Dio dà tranquillità, chi lo condannerà? Quando nasconde il suo volto, chi potrà vederlo, sia contro un'intera nazione o un sol uomo,

When He keeps quiet, who then can condemn? And when He hides His face, who then can behold Him, That is, in regard to both nation and man?—

30 p er impedire all'empio di regnare e al popolo di essere preso da lacci?

So that godless men would not rule Nor be snares of the people.

31 P uò uno dire a Dio: "Io porto la mia pena non farò piú il male;

“For has anyone said to God, ‘I have borne chastisement; I will not offend anymore;

32 m ostrami ciò che non riesco a vedere; se ho commesso qualche iniquità, non lo farò piú"?

Teach me what I do not see; If I have done iniquity, I will not do it again’?

33 D ovrebbe egli ricompensare in base alle tue condizioni, perché tu rifiuti il suo giudizio? Tu devi scegliere e non io; perciò di ciò che sai.

“Shall He recompense on your terms, because you have rejected it ? For you must choose, and not I; Therefore declare what you know.

34 L a gente assennata, come ogni uomo saggio che mi ascolta, mi dirà:

“Men of understanding will say to me, And a wise man who hears me,

35 " Giobbe parla senza intendimento, le sue parole sono prive di sapienza

‘Job speaks without knowledge, And his words are without wisdom.

36 S ia dunque Giobbe provato sino alla fine, perché le sue risposte sono come quelle degli uomini malvagi,

‘Job ought to be tried to the limit, Because he answers like wicked men.

37 p erché aggiunge al suo peccato la ribellione, batte le mani in mezzo a noi e moltiplica le sue parole contro Dio».

‘For he adds rebellion to his sin; He claps his hands among us, And multiplies his words against God.’”
