1 V ino a mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo:

Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

2 H ijo de hombre, habla a los hijos de tu pueblo, y diles: Cuando traiga yo la espada sobre la tierra, y el pueblo de la tierra tome un hombre de entre ellos y lo ponga por atalaya,

“Son of man, speak to the children of your people, and say to them: ‘When I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from their territory and make him their watchman,

3 s i, cuando él vea venir la espada sobre la tierra, toca trompeta y avisa al pueblo,

when he sees the sword coming upon the land, if he blows the trumpet and warns the people,

4 e ntonces cualquiera que oiga el sonido de la trompeta y no se aperciba, si la espada llega y lo quita de en medio, su sangre será sobre su propia cabeza.

then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet and does not take warning, if the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be on his own head.

5 O yó el sonido de la trompeta, y no se apercibió; su sangre será sobre él; mientras que si se hubiese apercibido, habría librado su vida.

He heard the sound of the trumpet, but did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But he who takes warning will save his life.

6 P ero si el atalaya ve venir la espada y no toca la trompeta, y el pueblo no se apercibe, y viniendo la espada, quita a alguien de en medio de ellos, éste es quitado de en medio por causa de su pecado, pero demandaré su sangre de mano del atalaya.

But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, and the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.’

7 A ti, pues, hijo de hombre, te he puesto por atalaya a la casa de Israel; cuando oigas la palabra de mi boca, los amonestarás de mi parte.

“So you, son of man: I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore you shall hear a word from My mouth and warn them for Me.

8 C uando yo diga al malvado: Oh malvado, de cierto morirás, si tú no hablas para apercibir al malvado de su mal camino, el malvado morirá por su pecado, pero su sangre yo la demandaré de tu mano.

When I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you shall surely die!’ and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand.

9 P ero si tú avisas al malvado de su camino para que se aparte de él, y él no se aparta de su camino, él morirá por su pecado, pero tú habrás librado tu vida. Mensaje de justicia

Nevertheless if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul.

10 T ú, pues, hijo de hombre, di a la casa de Israel: Vosotros habláis así, diciendo: Nuestras transgresiones y nuestros pecados están sobre nosotros, y a causa de ellos somos consumidos; ¿cómo, pues, viviremos?

“Therefore you, O son of man, say to the house of Israel: ‘Thus you say, “If our transgressions and our sins lie upon us, and we pine away in them, how can we then live?”’

11 D iles: Vivo yo, dice el Señor Jehová, que no me complazco en la muerte del malvado, sino en que se vuelva el malvado de su camino, y viva. Volveos, volveos de vuestros malos caminos; ¿por qué queréis morir, oh casa de Israel?

Say to them: ‘ As I live,’ says the Lord God, ‘I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel?’ The Fairness of God’s Judgment

12 Y tú, hijo de hombre, di a los hijos de tu pueblo: La justicia del justo no lo librará el día de su transgresión; y la impiedad del impío no le causará tropiezo el día que se vuelva de su impiedad; y el justo no podrá vivir por su justicia el día que peque.

“Therefore you, O son of man, say to the children of your people: ‘The righteousness of the righteous man shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression; as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall because of it in the day that he turns from his wickedness; nor shall the righteous be able to live because of his righteousness in the day that he sins.’

13 C uando yo diga al justo: De cierto vivirás; si él, confiado en su justicia, comete iniquidad, ninguna de sus justicias será recordada, sino que morirá por la iniquidad que cometió.

When I say to the righteous that he shall surely live, but he trusts in his own righteousness and commits iniquity, none of his righteous works shall be remembered; but because of the iniquity that he has committed, he shall die.

14 Y cuando yo diga al impío: De cierto morirás; si él se convierte de su pecado, y practica el derecho y la justicia,

Again, when I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ if he turns from his sin and does what is lawful and right,

15 s i el impío restituye la prenda, devuelve lo que haya robado, y camina en los estatutos de la vida, no haciendo iniquidad, vivirá ciertamente y no morirá.

if the wicked restores the pledge, gives back what he has stolen, and walks in the statutes of life without committing iniquity, he shall surely live; he shall not die.

16 N o se le recordará ninguno de los pecados que había cometido; ha practicado el derecho y la justicia; vivirá ciertamente.

None of his sins which he has committed shall be remembered against him; he has done what is lawful and right; he shall surely live.

17 Y aún dicen los hijos de tu pueblo: No es recto el camino del Señor; el camino de ellos es el que no es recto.

“Yet the children of your people say, ‘The way of the Lord is not fair.’ But it is their way which is not fair!

18 C uando el justo se aparte de su justicia y cometa iniquidad, morirá por ello.

When the righteous turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, he shall die because of it.

19 Y cuando el impío se aparte de su impiedad y practique el derecho y la justicia, vivirá por ello.

But when the wicked turns from his wickedness and does what is lawful and right, he shall live because of it.

20 Y aún decís: No es recto el camino del Señor. Yo os juzgaré, oh casa de Israel, a cada uno conforme a sus caminos. Nuevas de la caída de Jerusalén

Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not fair.’ O house of Israel, I will judge every one of you according to his own ways.” The Fall of Jerusalem

21 A conteció en el año duodécimo de nuestro cautiverio, en el mes décimo, a los cinco días del mes, que vino a mí un fugitivo de Jerusalén, diciendo: La ciudad ha sido tomada.

And it came to pass in the twelfth year of our captivity, in the tenth month, on the fifth day of the month, that one who had escaped from Jerusalem came to me and said, “The city has been captured!”

22 Y la mano de Jehová había sido sobre mí la tarde antes de llegar el fugitivo, y había abierto mi boca, antes de que él llegase a mí por la mañana; y abrió mi boca, y ya no estuve mudo por más tiempo.

Now the hand of the Lord had been upon me the evening before the man came who had escaped. And He had opened my mouth; so when he came to me in the morning, my mouth was opened, and I was no longer mute. The Cause of Judah’s Ruin

23 Y vino a mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo:

Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying:

24 H ijo de hombre, los que habitan aquellos lugares asolados en la tierra de Israel hablan diciendo: Abraham era uno, y poseyó la tierra; pues nosotros somos muchos; a nosotros nos es dada la tierra en posesión.

“Son of man, they who inhabit those ruins in the land of Israel are saying, ‘Abraham was only one, and he inherited the land. But we are many; the land has been given to us as a possession.’

25 P or tanto, diles: Así dice el Señor Jehová: Coméis con sangre, y alzáis vuestros ojos a vuestros ídolos, y derramáis sangre. ¿Y poseeréis vosotros la tierra?

“Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “You eat meat with blood, you lift up your eyes toward your idols, and shed blood. Should you then possess the land?

26 E stáis sobre vuestras espadas, hacéis abominación y contamináis cada cual a la mujer de su prójimo. ¿Y habréis de poseer la tierra?

You rely on your sword, you commit abominations, and you defile one another’s wives. Should you then possess the land?”’

27 L es dirás así: Así dice el Señor Jehová: Vivo yo, que los que están entre las ruinas, de cierto caerán a espada, y al que está sobre la faz del campo lo entregaré a las fieras para que lo devoren; y los que están en las fortalezas y en las cuevas, morirán de peste.

“Say thus to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “ As I live, surely those who are in the ruins shall fall by the sword, and the one who is in the open field I will give to the beasts to be devoured, and those who are in the strongholds and caves shall die of the pestilence.

28 Y convertiré la tierra en la mayor soledad, y cesará la soberbia de su poderío; y los montes de Israel serán asolados hasta que no haya quien pase por ellos.

For I will make the land most desolate, her arrogant strength shall cease, and the mountains of Israel shall be so desolate that no one will pass through.

29 E ntonces sabrán que yo soy Jehová, cuando yo haya convertido la tierra en la mayor soledad, por todas las abominaciones que han cometido.

Then they shall know that I am the Lord, when I have made the land most desolate because of all their abominations which they have committed.”’ Hearing and Not Doing

30 Y en cuanto a ti, hijo de hombre, los hijos de tu pueblo que hablan de ti junto a las paredes y a las puertas de las casas, y habla el uno con el otro, cada uno con su hermano, diciendo: Venid, os ruego, y oíd qué palabra viene de Jehová,

“As for you, son of man, the children of your people are talking about you beside the walls and in the doors of the houses; and they speak to one another, everyone saying to his brother, ‘Please come and hear what the word is that comes from the Lord.’

31 y vienen a ti como viene el pueblo, y se sientan delante de ti como pueblo mío, y oyen tus palabras pero no las ponen por obra; antes hacen halagos con sus bocas, pero el corazón de ellos anda en pos de su avaricia,

So they come to you as people do, they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words, but they do not do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their hearts pursue their own gain.

32 y he aquí que tú eres a ellos como cantor de amores, de alguien que tiene voz agradable y toca bien un instrumento; así que oyen tus palabras, pero no las ponen por obra;

Indeed you are to them as a very lovely song of one who has a pleasant voice and can play well on an instrument; for they hear your words, but they do not do them.

33 c uando esto venga (y está viniendo ya), sabrán que ha habido un profeta entre ellos.

And when this comes to pass—surely it will come—then they will know that a prophet has been among them.”
