1 T hen it came about afterwards that David inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I go up to one of the cities of Judah?” And the Lord said to him, “Go up.” So David said, “Where shall I go up?” And He said, “ To Hebron.”

¶ Después de esto aconteció que David consultó al SEÑOR, diciendo: ¿Subiré a alguna de las ciudades de Judá? Y el SEÑOR le respondió: Sube. Y David volvió a decir: ¿A dónde subiré? Y él le dijo: A Hebrón.

2 S o David went up there, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite.

Y David subió allá, y con él sus dos mujeres, Ahinoam la jezreelita y Abigail, la que fue mujer de Nabal del Carmelo.

3 A nd David brought up his men who were with him, each with his household; and they lived in the cities of Hebron.

Y llevó también David consigo los varones que con él habían estado, cada uno con su familia; los cuales moraron en las ciudades de Hebrón.

4 T hen the men of Judah came and there anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, “It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul.”

Y vinieron los varones de Judá, y ungieron allí a David por rey sobre la casa de Judá. Y dieron aviso a David, diciendo: Los de Jabes de Galaad fueron los que sepultaron a Saúl.

5 D avid sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said to them, “ May you be blessed of the Lord because you have shown this kindness to Saul your lord, and have buried him.

Y envió David mensajeros a los de Jabes de Galaad, diciéndoles: Benditos seáis vosotros del SEÑOR, que habéis hecho esta misericordia con vuestro señor Saúl en haberle dado sepultura.

6 N ow may the Lord show lovingkindness and truth to you; and I also will show this goodness to you, because you have done this thing.

Ahora pues, el SEÑOR haga con vosotros misericordia y verdad; y yo también os haré bien por esto que habéis hecho.

7 N ow therefore, let your hands be strong and be valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.” Ish-bosheth Made King over Israel

Esfuércense pues ahora vuestras manos, y sed valientes; pues que muerto Saúl vuestro señor, los de la casa de Judá me han ungido por rey sobre ellos.

8 B ut Abner the son of Ner, commander of Saul’s army, had taken Ish-bosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim.

¶ Mas Abner hijo de Ner, general del ejército de Saúl, tomó a Is-boset hijo de Saúl, y lo hizo pasar a Mahanaim.

9 H e made him king over Gilead, over the Ashurites, over Jezreel, over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, even over all Israel.

Y lo proclamó rey sobre Galaad, sobre Gesuri, sobre Jezreel, sobre Efraín, sobre Benjamín, y sobre todo Israel.

10 I sh-bosheth, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he became king over Israel, and he was king for two years. The house of Judah, however, followed David.

De cuarenta años era Is-boset hijo de Saúl, cuando comenzó a reinar sobre Israel; y reinó dos años. Sólo la casa de Judá seguía a David.

11 T he time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months. Civil War

Y fue el número de los días que David reinó en Hebrón sobre la casa de Judá, siete años y seis meses.

12 N ow Abner the son of Ner, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon with the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul.

Y Abner hijo de Ner salió de Mahanaim a Gabaón con los siervos de Is-boset hijo de Saúl.

13 A nd Joab the son of Zeruiah and the servants of David went out and met them by the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, one on the one side of the pool and the other on the other side of the pool.

Y Joab hijo de Sarvia, y los criados de David, salieron y los encontraron junto al estanque de Gabaón; y cuando se juntaron, se pararon los unos a un lado del estanque, y los otros al otro lado.

14 T hen Abner said to Joab, “Now let the young men arise and hold a contest before us.” And Joab said, “Let them arise.”

Y dijo Abner a Joab: Levántense ahora los jóvenes, y maniobren delante de nosotros. Y Joab respondió: Levántense.

15 S o they arose and went over by count, twelve for Benjamin and Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.

Entonces se levantaron, y en número de doce, pasaron de Benjamín de la parte de Is-boset hijo de Saúl; y doce de los siervos de David.

16 E ach one of them seized his opponent by the head and thrust his sword in his opponent’s side; so they fell down together. Therefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon.

Y cada uno echó mano de la cabeza de su compañero, y le metió su espada por el costado de su compañero, y cayeron a una; y fue llamado aquel lugar, Helcat-hazurim (la heredad de los fuertes), el cual está en Gabaón.

17 T hat day the battle was very severe, and Abner and the men of Israel were beaten before the servants of David.

Y hubo aquel día una batalla muy recia, donde Abner y los varones de Israel fueron vencidos por los siervos de David.

18 N ow the three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab and Abishai and Asahel; and Asahel was as swift-footed as one of the gazelles which is in the field.

¶ Y estaban allí los tres hijos de Sarvia: Joab, Abisai, y Asael. Este Asael era tan ligero de pies como un corzo del monte.

19 A sahel pursued Abner and did not turn to the right or to the left from following Abner.

El cual Asael siguió a Abner, yendo tras de él sin apartarse a diestra ni a siniestra.

20 T hen Abner looked behind him and said, “Is that you, Asahel?” And he answered, “It is I.”

Y Abner miró atrás, y dijo: ¿No eres tú Asael? Y él respondió: Sí.

21 S o Abner said to him, “ Turn to your right or to your left, and take hold of one of the young men for yourself, and take for yourself his spoil.” But Asahel was not willing to turn aside from following him.

Entonces Abner le dijo: Apartate a la derecha o a la izquierda, y agárrate alguno de los jóvenes, y toma para ti sus despojos. Pero Asael no quiso apartarse de en pos de él.

22 A bner repeated again to Asahel, “Turn aside from following me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How then could I lift up my face to your brother Joab?”

Y Abner volvió a decir a Asael: Apartate de en pos de mí, porque te heriré derribándote en tierra, y después ¿cómo levantaré mi rostro a tu hermano Joab?

23 H owever, he refused to turn aside; therefore Abner struck him in the belly with the butt end of the spear, so that the spear came out at his back. And he fell there and died on the spot. And it came about that all who came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died, stood still.

Y no queriendo él irse, lo hirió Abner con el regatón de la lanza por la quinta costilla, y le salió la lanza por las espaldas, y cayó allí, y murió en aquel mismo sitio. Y todos los que venían por aquel lugar donde Asael había caído y estaba muerto, se detenían.

24 B ut Joab and Abishai pursued Abner, and when the sun was going down, they came to the hill of Ammah, which is in front of Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.

Mas Joab y Abisai siguieron a Abner; y se les puso el sol cuando llegaron al collado de Amma, que está delante de Gía, junto al camino del desierto de Gabaón.

25 T he sons of Benjamin gathered together behind Abner and became one band, and they stood on the top of a certain hill.

¶ Y se juntaron los hijos de Benjamín en un escuadrón con Abner, y e hicieron alto en la cumbre del collado.

26 T hen Abner called to Joab and said, “Shall the sword devour forever? Do you not know that it will be bitter in the end? How long will you refrain from telling the people to turn back from following their brothers?”

Y Abner dio voces a Joab, diciendo: ¿Consumirá la espada perpetuamente? ¿No sabes tú que al final habrá amargura? ¿Hasta cuándo no has de decir al pueblo que se vuelvan de seguir a sus hermanos?

27 J oab said, “As God lives, if you had not spoken, surely then the people would have gone away in the morning, each from following his brother.”

Y Joab respondió: Vive Dios que si no hubieras hablado, ya desde esta mañana el pueblo hubiera dejado de seguir a sus hermanos.

28 S o Joab blew the trumpet; and all the people halted and pursued Israel no longer, nor did they continue to fight anymore.

Entonces Joab tocó el shofar, y todo el pueblo se detuvo, y no siguió más a los de Israel, ni peleó más.

29 A bner and his men then went through the Arabah all that night; so they crossed the Jordan, walked all morning, and came to Mahanaim.

Y Abner y los suyos caminaron por la campiña toda aquella noche, y pasando el Jordán cruzaron por todo Bet-horón, y llegaron a Mahanaim.

30 T hen Joab returned from following Abner; when he had gathered all the people together, nineteen of David’s servants besides Asahel were missing.

Joab también volvió de seguir a Abner, y juntando todo el pueblo, faltaron de los siervos de David diecinueve hombres, y Asael.

31 B ut the servants of David had struck down many of Benjamin and Abner’s men, so that three hundred and sixty men died.

Mas los siervos de David hirieron de los de Benjamín y de los de Abner, trescientos sesenta hombres, los cuales murieron. Tomaron luego a Asael, y lo sepultaron en el sepulcro de su padre en Belén.

32 A nd they took up Asahel and buried him in his father’s tomb which was in Bethlehem. Then Joab and his men went all night until the day dawned at Hebron.

Y caminaron toda aquella noche Joab y los suyos, y amanecieron en Hebrón.
