Yea, whereto might the strength of their hands profit me, in whom old age was perished?

3 V agaban solitarios, muertos de hambre, huyendo de las sombras y de la soledad,

For want and famine they were solitary; fleeing into the wilderness in former time desolate and waste.

4 r ecogiendo hierbas del campo y haciendo fuego con raíces de enebro,

Who cut up mallows by the bushes, and juniper roots for their meat.

5 s iendo rechazados por todo el mundo, y tratados a gritos, como si fueran ladrones;

They were driven forth from among men, (they cried after them as after a thief;)

6 v iviendo en las barrancas de los arroyos, o en cuevas y entre las rocas,

To dwell in the cliffs of the valleys, in caves of the earth, and in the rocks.

7 a ullando en medio de la maleza, y reuniéndose entre los espinos.

Among the bushes they brayed; under the nettles they were gathered together.

8 G ente envilecida, carente de nombre, de instintos tan bajos que no merecían vivir.

They were children of fools, yea, children of base men: they were viler than the earth.

9 » Pero ahora soy su hazmerreír; soy para ellos objeto de burla.

And now am I their song, yea, I am their byword.

10 M e rechazan, se alejan de mí, y aun se atreven a escupirme en la cara.

They abhor me, they flee far from me, and spare not to spit in my face.

11 C omo Dios me humilló y me soltó de su mano, me han perdido el respeto y se burlan de mí.

Because he hath loosed my cord, and afflicted me, they have also let loose the bridle before me.

12 M e tienen rodeado, como una chusma, y me empujan de un lado a otro para hacer que yo caiga y me pierda.

Upon my right hand rise the youth; they push away my feet, and they raise up against me the ways of their destruction.

13 M e cierran el paso, para destruirme, ¡se aprovechan de mi sufrimiento sin que nadie se lo impida!

They mar my path, they set forward my calamity, they have no helper.

14 ¡ Se lanzan furiosos contra mí, como soldados que asaltan una muralla!

They came upon me as a wide breaking in of waters: in the desolation they rolled themselves upon me.

15 L a confusión me domina; han lanzado mi honra por los aires; ¡mis riquezas se esfumaron como nubes!

Terrors are turned upon me: they pursue my soul as the wind: and my welfare passeth away as a cloud.

16 » Una gran tristeza embarga mi alma; todo el tiempo me domina la aflicción.

And now my soul is poured out upon me; the days of affliction have taken hold upon me.

17 P or las noches, el dolor me corroe los huesos, el sueño se me va, y ya no encuentro reposo.

My bones are pierced in me in the night season: and my sinews take no rest.

18 ¡ Tú, Dios mío, me sujetas la ropa por el cuello con tal violencia que siento que me ahogo!

By the great force of my disease is my garment changed: it bindeth me about as the collar of my coat.

19 T ú me has derribado por el suelo, y ahora soy como el polvo, ¡sólo soy ceniza!

He hath cast me into the mire, and I am become like dust and ashes.

20 C lamo a ti, y no me escuchas; a ti recurro, y ni siquiera me miras.

I cry unto thee, and thou dost not hear me: I stand up, and thou regardest me not.

21 T e has vuelto muy cruel conmigo, pues me atacas con tu mano poderosa.

Thou art become cruel to me: with thy strong hand thou opposest thyself against me.

22 M e has hecho volar por los aires, y por los aires vuelo, como nada.

Thou liftest me up to the wind; thou causest me to ride upon it, and dissolvest my substance.

23 B ien sé que me llevas a la muerte, a la mansión reservada para todos los mortales.

For I know that thou wilt bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living.

24 » ¿Acaso no se tiende la mano al necesitado cuando en su angustia reclama ayuda?

Howbeit he will not stretch out his hand to the grave, though they cry in his destruction.

25 ¿ Acaso no me apiadé del afligido y tuve compasión del que nada tenía?

Did not I weep for him that was in trouble? was not my soul grieved for the poor?

26 C uando yo esperaba el bien, me vino el mal; cuando esperaba la luz, me cayó la oscuridad.

When I looked for good, then evil came unto me: and when I waited for light, there came darkness.

27 S iento en mi interior una gran agitación; tiempos de aflicción me tienen abrumado.

My bowels boiled, and rested not: the days of affliction prevented me.

28 A ndo en penumbras, sin la luz del sol; en medio de la congregación me levanto y clamo,

I went mourning without the sun: I stood up, and I cried in the congregation.

29 A hora soy compañero de los chacales y amigo de los avestruces.

I am a brother to dragons, and a companion to owls.

30 L a piel se me reseca, y se me desprende, y en los huesos siento un ardor insoportable.

My skin is black upon me, and my bones are burned with heat.

31 D e mi arpa brotan notas de tristeza; ¡de mi flauta salen cantos de lamento!

My harp also is turned to mourning, and my organ into the voice of them that weep.
