1 A jaz tenía veinte años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó en Jerusalén dieciséis años; pero, a diferencia de su antepasado David, no hizo lo recto a los ojos del Señor,

Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem: but he did not that which was right in the sight of the Lord, like David his father:

2 s ino que siguió el mal ejemplo de los reyes de Israel y, además, hizo imágenes fundidas en honor de los baales,

For he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and made also molten images for Baalim.

3 q uemó incienso en el valle de Ben Jinón, y hasta ofreció a sus hijos en holocausto, siguiendo las repugnantes prácticas de las naciones que el Señor había arrojado de la presencia de los israelitas.

Moreover he burnt incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burnt his children in the fire, after the abominations of the heathen whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel.

4 A sí mismo, ofreció sacrificios y quemó incienso en los lugares altos, en las colinas y debajo de todo árbol frondoso.

He sacrificed also and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.

5 P or eso el Señor su Dios lo dejó caer en manos del rey de Siria, y los sirios lo derrotaron y lo llevaron a Damasco, junto con un gran número de prisioneros. Ajaz también cayó en manos del rey de Israel, el cual lo derrotó y le causó gran mortandad.

Wherefore the Lord his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria; and they smote him, and carried away a great multitude of them captives, and brought them to Damascus. And he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who smote him with a great slaughter.

6 P or haberse apartado del Señor, el Dios de sus padres, en un solo día Pecaj hijo de Remalías mató en Judá a ciento veinte mil valientes.

For Pekah the son of Remaliah slew in Judah an hundred and twenty thousand in one day, which were all valiant men; because they had forsaken the Lord God of their fathers.

7 D e igual manera Zicri, que era un efraimita muy aguerrido, dio muerte a Maseías, que era hijo del rey; a Azricán, que era su mayordomo; y a Elcana, segundo en poder después del rey.

And Zichri, a mighty man of Ephraim, slew Maaseiah the king's son, and Azrikam the governor of the house, and Elkanah that was next to the king.

8 L os israelitas también tomaron cautivos a doscientos mil de sus parientes, además de mujeres, niños y niñas, y de arrebatarles un gran botín de guerra que se llevaron a Samaria.

And the children of Israel carried away captive of their brethren two hundred thousand, women, sons, and daughters, and took also away much spoil from them, and brought the spoil to Samaria.

9 H abía en Samaria un profeta del Señor. Se llamaba Obed. Y cuando el ejército iba entrando en Samaria, Obed salió y se enfrentó a ellos, y les dijo: «Tomen en cuenta que el Señor, el Dios de sus padres, ha entregado en manos de ustedes a Judá porque está enojado contra ellos; ¡pero ustedes los han matado con una ira que ha llegado hasta el cielo!

But a prophet of the Lord was there, whose name was Oded: and he went out before the host that came to Samaria, and said unto them, Behold, because the Lord God of your fathers was wroth with Judah, he hath delivered them into your hand, and ye have slain them in a rage that reacheth up unto heaven.

10 A hora ustedes han decidido esclavizar a los de Judá y Jerusalén, pero ¿acaso ustedes no han pecado contra el Señor su Dios?

And now ye purpose to keep under the children of Judah and Jerusalem for bondmen and bondwomen unto you: but are there not with you, even with you, sins against the Lord your God?

11 A sí que escúchenme: dejen libres a sus parientes que han hecho cautivos, porque el Señor está enojado contra ustedes.»

Now hear me therefore, and deliver the captives again, which ye have taken captive of your brethren: for the fierce wrath of the Lord is upon you.

12 E ntonces Azarías hijo de Johanán, Berequías hijo de Mesilemot, Ezequías hijo de Salún, y Amasa hijo de Jadlay, que eran algunos de los efraimitas más importantes, salieron al encuentro de los que venían de la guerra

Then certain of the heads of the children of Ephraim, Azariah the son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, and Jehizkiah the son of Shallum, and Amasa the son of Hadlai, stood up against them that came from the war,

13 y les dijeron: «No traigan aquí a los cautivos, porque pesa sobre nosotros el pecado cometido contra el Señor. Ya es muy grande nuestro delito, y grande también la ardiente ira de Dios contra Israel, y ustedes quieren añadir más a nuestros pecados y nuestras culpas.»

And said unto them, Ye shall not bring in the captives hither: for whereas we have offended against the Lord already, ye intend to add more to our sins and to our trespass: for our trespass is great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel.

14 E ntonces el ejército dejó libres a los cautivos, y depositó el botín ante los príncipes y toda la multitud.

So the armed men left the captives and the spoil before the princes and all the congregation.

15 L os hombres ya mencionados se dedicaron a atender a los cautivos, y con los despojos vistieron a los que estaban desnudos, y los calzaron, y les dieron de comer y de beber, los limpiaron con aceite; a los más débiles los montaron en asnos y los llevaron hasta Jericó, la ciudad de las palmeras, para acercarlos a sus parientes, y ellos regresaron a Samaria.

And the men which were expressed by name rose up, and took the captives, and with the spoil clothed all that were naked among them, and arrayed them, and shod them, and gave them to eat and to drink, and anointed them, and carried all the feeble of them upon asses, and brought them to Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brethren: then they returned to Samaria.

16 E n aquel tiempo el rey Ajaz pidió la ayuda de los reyes de Asiria,

At that time did king Ahaz send unto the kings of Assyria to help him.

17 p ues también los edomitas habían venido y atacado a los de Judá, y se habían llevado muchos cautivos.

For again the Edomites had come and smitten Judah, and carried away captives.

18 T ambién los filisteos se habían extendido por las ciudades de la llanura y del sur de Judá, y habían capturado Bet Semes, Ayalón, Gederot, Soco y sus aldeas, Timna y sus aldeas, y Gimzo y sus aldeas, y se habían quedado a vivir en ellas.

The Philistines also had invaded the cities of the low country, and of the south of Judah, and had taken Bethshemesh, and Ajalon, and Gederoth, and Shocho with the villages thereof, and Timnah with the villages thereof, Gimzo also and the villages thereof: and they dwelt there.

19 Y es que por culpa del rey Ajaz de Israel el Señor había humillado a Judá, pues la conducta de Ajaz en Judá había sido desenfrenada, y Ajaz había pecado gravemente contra el Señor.

For the Lord brought Judah low because of Ahaz king of Israel; for he made Judah naked, and transgressed sore against the Lord.

20 T ambién el rey Tiglat Piléser de Asiria atacó a Ajaz y lo mantuvo sitiado, sin brindarle ningún apoyo.

And Tilgathpilneser king of Assyria came unto him, and distressed him, but strengthened him not.

21 Y aunque Ajaz saqueó el templo del Señor, y el palacio real y las mansiones de los príncipes, y todo se lo dio al rey de Asiria, éste no lo ayudó.

For Ahaz took away a portion out of the house of the Lord, and out of the house of the king, and of the princes, and gave it unto the king of Assyria: but he helped him not.

22 P ara colmo, mientras más lo presionó el rey de Asiria, mayor fue el pecado del rey Ajaz contra el Señor,

And in the time of his distress did he trespass yet more against the Lord: this is that king Ahaz.

23 p ues Ajaz ofreció sacrificios a los dioses de Damasco que lo habían derrotado, y dijo: «Ya que los dioses de Siria ayudan a sus reyes, yo también voy a ofrecerles sacrificios para que me ayuden.» Pero esos dioses fueron la ruina de Ajaz y la de todo Israel.

For he sacrificed unto the gods of Damascus, which smote him: and he said, Because the gods of the kings of Syria help them, therefore will I sacrifice to them, that they may help me. But they were the ruin of him, and of all Israel.

24 A demás de todo esto, Ajaz recogió los utensilios del templo de Dios, y los hizo pedazos; luego cerró las puertas del templo del Señor y se hizo altares por todos los rincones de Jerusalén.

And Ahaz gathered together the vessels of the house of God, and cut in pieces the vessels of the house of God, and shut up the doors of the house of the Lord, and he made him altars in every corner of Jerusalem.

25 T ambién levantó lugares altos en todas las ciudades de Judá, para quemar incienso a dioses extraños, con lo que provocó la ira del Señor, el Dios de sus padres.

And in every several city of Judah he made high places to burn incense unto other gods, and provoked to anger the Lord God of his fathers.

26 L os demás hechos de Ajaz, y todos sus actos, primeros y últimos, se hallan escritos en el libro de los reyes de Judá y de Israel.

Now the rest of his acts and of all his ways, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.

27 F inalmente, Ajaz descansó entre sus antepasados, y fue sepultado en la ciudad de Jerusalén, aunque no lo pusieron en los sepulcros de los reyes de Israel. En su lugar reinó Ezequías, su hijo.

And Ahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, even in Jerusalem: but they brought him not into the sepulchres of the kings of Israel: and Hezekiah his son reigned in his stead.
