1 P ero digo también: Mientras el heredero es niño, en nada difiere del esclavo, aunque es señor de todo,

Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all;

2 s ólo que está bajo tutores y guardianes hasta el tiempo señalado por el padre.

But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.

3 A sí también nosotros, cuando éramos niños, vivíamos en esclavitud y sujetos a los principios básicos del mundo.

Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world:

4 P ero cuando se cumplió el tiempo señalado, Dios envió a su Hijo, que nació de una mujer y sujeto a la ley,

But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,

5 p ara que redimiera a los que estaban sujetos a la ley, a fin de que recibiéramos la adopción de hijos.

To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

6 Y por cuanto ustedes son hijos, Dios envió a sus corazones el Espíritu de su Hijo, el cual clama: «¡Abba, Padre!»

And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

7 A sí que ya no eres esclavo, sino hijo; y si eres hijo, también eres heredero de Dios por medio de Cristo. Exhortación contra el volver a la esclavitud

Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

8 C iertamente, en otro tiempo, cuando ustedes no conocían a Dios, servían a los que por naturaleza no son dioses;

Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.

9 p ero ahora que conocen a Dios, o más bien, que Dios los conoce a ustedes, ¿cómo es que han vuelto de nuevo a los débiles y pobres rudimentos, a los cuales quieren volver a esclavizarse?

But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?

10 U stedes guardan los días, los meses, los tiempos y los años.

Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.

11 ¡ Me temo que, con ustedes, yo he trabajado en vano!

I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.

12 L es ruego, hermanos, que se hagan como yo, porque yo también me he hecho como ustedes. Ningún agravio me han hecho.

Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am; for I am as ye are: ye have not injured me at all.

13 B ien saben ustedes que, debido a una enfermedad del cuerpo, les anuncié el evangelio al principio,

Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first.

14 y ustedes no me despreciaron ni desecharon por la prueba que tenía en el cuerpo, sino que me recibieron como a un ángel de Dios, como a Cristo Jesús.

And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.

15 ¿ Dónde, pues, está esa satisfacción que experimentaban? Yo doy testimonio de que, de haber podido, ustedes se habrían sacado sus propios ojos, para dármelos.

Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.

16 ¿ Acaso me he vuelto enemigo de ustedes, por decirles la verdad?

Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?

17 A lgunos muestran mucho interés por ustedes, pero no para bien, sino que quieren apartarlos de nosotros para que ustedes muestren interés por ellos.

They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them.

18 Q ué bien que muestren interés en lo bueno siempre, y no sólo cuando estoy presente con ustedes.

But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you.

19 H ijitos míos, por quienes vuelvo a sufrir dolores de parto, hasta que Cristo sea formado en ustedes,

My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,

20 q uisiera estar con ustedes ahora mismo y cambiar de tono, pues ustedes me tienen perplejo. Alegoría de Sara y Agar

I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you.

21 D íganme, ustedes que quieren estar sujetos a la ley: ¿no han oído lo que dice la ley?

Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?

22 P orque está escrito que Abrahán tuvo dos hijos; uno de la esclava, y el otro de la libre.

For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.

23 E l hijo de la esclava nació conforme a una decisión humana; pero el hijo de la libre nació conforme a la promesa.

But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.

24 L o cual es una alegoría, pues estas mujeres son los dos pactos; el uno proviene del monte Sinaí, el cual da hijos para esclavitud; éste es Agar.

Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.

25 P orque Agar es el monte Sinaí en Arabia, y corresponde a la Jerusalén actual, y ésta, junto con sus hijos, está en esclavitud.

For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.

26 P ero la Jerusalén de arriba, la cual es madre de todos nosotros, es libre.

But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

27 P orque está escrito: «Regocíjate, oh estéril, tú que no das a luz; prorrumpe en júbilo y clama, tú que no tienes dolores de parto; porque más son los hijos de la desolada que los de la que tiene marido.»

For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.

28 A sí que, hermanos, nosotros, como Isaac, somos hijos de la promesa.

Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

29 P ero como entonces el que había nacido según la carne perseguía al que había nacido según el Espíritu, así también sucede ahora.

But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.

30 P ero ¿qué dice la Escritura? «Echa fuera a la esclava y a su hijo, porque el hijo de la esclava no heredará con el hijo de la libre.»

Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.

31 D e modo, hermanos, que no somos hijos de la esclava, sino de la libre.

So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.
