1 L a guerra entre las familias de Saúl y de David fue larga, pero mientras que la familia de David se iba fortaleciendo, la de Saúl se iba debilitando. Los hijos de David nacidos en Hebrón

Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: but David waxed stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker.

2 E n Hebrón le nacieron hijos a David. Su primogénito fue Amnón, hijo de Ajinoán la jezreelita;

And unto David were sons born in Hebron: and his firstborn was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;

3 e l segundo fue Quilab, hijo de Abigaíl, la mujer de Nabal, el de Carmel; el tercero fue Absalón, hijo de Macá, la hija de Talmay, el rey de Gesur;

And his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;

4 e l cuarto fue Adonías, hijo de Jaguit; el quinto fue Sefatías, hijo de Abital;

And the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;

5 e l sexto fue Itreán, hijo de Egla, también mujer de David. Éstos fueron los hijos que le nacieron a David en Hebrón. Abner pacta con David en Hebrón

And the sixth, Ithream, by Eglah David's wife. These were born to David in Hebron.

6 E n la guerra que había entre las familias de Saúl y de David, Abner defendía a la familia de Saúl.

And it came to pass, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner made himself strong for the house of Saul.

7 C omo Saúl había tenido una concubina, la cual se llamaba Rispá y era hija de Ayá, un día Isboset increpó a Abner: «¿Por qué te has acostado con la concubina de mi padre?»

And Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah: and Ishbosheth said to Abner, Wherefore hast thou gone in unto my father's concubine?

8 A bner se disgustó por el reclamo de Isboset, y le dijo: “«¿Acaso piensas que soy un simple perro, al servicio de Judá? ¿Yo, que he tratado con misericordia a la familia de Saúl, tu padre, y a sus familiares y amigos? ¿Yo, que no te he puesto en las manos de David? ¡Y ahora vienes a reclamarme por andar con esa mujer!

Then was Abner very wroth for the words of Ishbosheth, and said, Am I a dog's head, which against Judah do shew kindness this day unto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David, that thou chargest me to day with a fault concerning this woman?

9 Q ue el Señor me castigue duramente, y más aún, si no hago con David lo que Dios le prometió

So do God to Abner, and more also, except, as the Lord hath sworn to David, even so I do to him;

10 y pongo en sus manos el reino de Saúl, y lo confirmo como rey de Israel y de Judá, desde Dan hasta Berseba.»

To translate the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beersheba.

11 I sboset lo escuchó, y no pudo responderle porque le tenía miedo.

And he could not answer Abner a word again, because he feared him.

12 E ntonces Abner envió mensajeros a David para preguntarle: «¿De quién es el país? Aquí tienes mi mano. Hagamos un pacto, y me comprometo a hacer que todo Israel te reconozca como rey.»

And Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, Whose is the land? saying also, Make thy league with me, and, behold, my hand shall be with thee, to bring about all Israel unto thee.

13 A l oír David esta propuesta, respondió: «Acepto tu propuesta, con una condición: Cuando vengas a verme, trae contigo a Mical, la hija de Saúl. Si no la traes, mejor no vengas.»

And he said, Well; I will make a league with thee: but one thing I require of thee, that is, Thou shalt not see my face, except thou first bring Michal Saul's daughter, when thou comest to see my face.

14 D espués de esto, David mandó a decir a Isboset, el hijo de Saúl, que le devolviera a Mical, porque era su mujer, pues por ella había entregado cien prepucios de los filisteos.

And David sent messengers to Ishbosheth Saul's son, saying, Deliver me my wife Michal, which I espoused to me for an hundred foreskins of the Philistines.

15 I sboset ordenó entonces que fueran a casa de Paltiel hijo de Lais y le quitaran a Mical.

And Ishbosheth sent, and took her from her husband, even from Phaltiel the son of Laish.

16 P altiel se fue llorando tras ella, hasta llegar a Bajurín, pero Abner le ordenó que se regresara a su casa y Paltiel obedeció.

And her husband went with her along weeping behind her to Bahurim. Then said Abner unto him, Go, return. And he returned.

17 L uego, Abner habló con los ancianos de Israel y les dijo: «Hace tiempo que ustedes procuran que David sea el rey de Israel.

And Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, Ye sought for David in times past to be king over you:

18 H áganlo ahora, porque el Señor ha hablado con él y le ha dicho: “Tú serás el instrumento que yo usaré para librar a mi pueblo del poder de los filisteos y de todos sus enemigos.”»

Now then do it: for the Lord hath spoken of David, saying, By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.

19 L uego fue y habló con los benjaminitas, y después de eso se dirigió a Hebrón para comunicarle a David que el pueblo de Israel y los benjaminitas estaban de acuerdo.

And Abner also spake in the ears of Benjamin: and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel, and that seemed good to the whole house of Benjamin.

20 P ara visitar a David en Hebrón, Abner se hizo acompañar de veinte hombres, y David les ofreció un banquete a todos ellos.

So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him. And David made Abner and the men that were with him a feast.

21 A llí Abner le hizo a David esta promesa: «Me propongo reunir a todo el pueblo de Israel, para que hagan un pacto contigo y tú reines como lo tienes pensado.» Entonces David despidió a Abner, y éste partió en paz. Joab mata a Abner

And Abner said unto David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king, that they may make a league with thee, and that thou mayest reign over all that thine heart desireth. And David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.

22 D espués de visitar a David, Abner se marchó de Hebrón muy tranquilo. Mientras tanto, Joab y los hombres de David regresaban del campo de batalla con un gran botín,

And, behold, the servants of David and Joab came from pursuing a troop, and brought in a great spoil with them: but Abner was not with David in Hebron; for he had sent him away, and he was gone in peace.

23 y al llegar a Hebrón le informaron que Abner hijo de Ner había estado con David y que lo había despedido en paz.

When Joab and all the host that was with him were come, they told Joab, saying, Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he hath sent him away, and he is gone in peace.

24 E ntonces Joab se presentó ante David, y le reclamó: «Supe que Abner vino a visitarte, y que tú lo has dejado ir. ¿Por qué lo hiciste?

Then Joab came to the king, and said, What hast thou done? behold, Abner came unto thee; why is it that thou hast sent him away, and he is quite gone?

25 T ú bien sabes que él sólo ha venido para engañarte y para saber por dónde andas y qué es lo que haces.»

Thou knowest Abner the son of Ner, that he came to deceive thee, and to know thy going out and thy coming in, and to know all that thou doest.

26 E n cuanto Joab salió de la presencia de David, sin que David lo supiera mandó un mensaje a Abner, pidiéndole que regresara a Hebrón, aunque Abner ya iba por el pozo de Sira.

And when Joab was come out from David, he sent messengers after Abner, which brought him again from the well of Sirah: but David knew it not.

27 C uando Abner volvió, Joab lo llevó aparte, a un lado de la puerta, diciéndole que quería hablar con él en secreto. En realidad, quería vengar la muerte de su hermano Asael, así que le hundió una daga por la quinta costilla, y lo mató.

And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.

28 C uando David lo supo, dijo: «El Señor es testigo de que mi reino y yo somos inocentes de la muerte de Abner hijo de Ner.

And afterward when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the Lord for ever from the blood of Abner the son of Ner:

29 ¡ Que recaiga un severo castigo sobre Joab y sobre toda la familia de su padre! ¡Que nunca falte en su casa quien padezca flujo de sangre, ni quien sea leproso o inválido, ni quien muera asesinado o sufra de hambre.»

Let it rest on the head of Joab, and on all his father's house; and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue, or that is a leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth on the sword, or that lacketh bread.

30 A sí fue como Joab y su hermano Abisay se vengaron de Abner por haber matado a su hermano Asael durante la batalla de Gabaón.

So Joab, and Abishai his brother slew Abner, because he had slain their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.

31 D avid, por su parte, llamó a Joab y a sus acompañantes, y les dijo: «Rásguense la ropa y vístanse de cilicio, y guarden luto por la muerte de Abner.» Y echó a andar, detrás del ataúd.

And David said to Joab, and to all the people that were with him, Rend your clothes, and gird you with sackcloth, and mourn before Abner. And king David himself followed the bier.

32 A bner fue sepultado en Hebrón, y el rey y el pueblo lloraron amargamente al lado del sepulcro.

And they buried Abner in Hebron: and the king lifted up his voice, and wept at the grave of Abner; and all the people wept.

33 A demás, el rey honró a Abner al decir: «¿Por qué, Abner, tuviste que morir como un villano?

And the king lamented over Abner, and said, Died Abner as a fool dieth?

34 ¡ No tenías las manos atadas, ni los pies encadenados! ¡Caíste traicionado por gente malvada!» Y el pueblo volvió a llorar junto al sepulcro.

Thy hands were not bound, nor thy feet put into fetters: as a man falleth before wicked men, so fellest thou. And all the people wept again over him.

35 L uego, fueron a ver al rey para que comiera algo, pero él dijo: «Que Dios me castigue, y más aún, si rompo mi promesa de no comer antes de que se ponga el sol.»

And when all the people came to cause David to eat meat while it was yet day, David sware, saying, So do God to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or ought else, till the sun be down.

36 C uando el pueblo supo la decisión de David, la celebró, pues todo lo que el rey hacía era del agrado del pueblo.

And all the people took notice of it, and it pleased them: as whatsoever the king did pleased all the people.

37 Y ese día el pueblo comprendió que David nada había tenido que ver con la muerte de Abner.

For all the people and all Israel understood that day that it was not of the king to slay Abner the son of Ner.

38 A demás, David habló con sus hombres y les dijo: «¿Se dan cuenta que hoy ha muerto un gran príncipe de Israel?

And the king said unto his servants, Know ye not that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel?

39 Y yo, aunque me han ungido como rey, reconozco que soy débil y que estos hombres, los hijos de Seruyá, son muy violentos. Que el Señor les dé su merecido a los malvados, como corresponde a su maldad.»

And I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah be too hard for me: the Lord shall reward the doer of evil according to his wickedness.
