1 “ Hear, O Israel! You are crossing over the Jordan today to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than you, great cities fortified to heaven,

»Oye, Israel: hoy vas a cruzar el Jordán, y entrarás a despojar a naciones más numerosas y más poderosas que tú, de grandes ciudades, con murallas que llegan hasta el cielo.

2 a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know and of whom you have heard it said, ‘ Who can stand before the sons of Anak?’

Son un pueblo grande y alto, descendientes de los anaquitas. Tú ya tienes conocimiento de ellos, y conoces el dicho: “¿Quién puede hacerles frente a los anaquitas?”

3 K now therefore today that it is the Lord your God who is crossing over before you as a consuming fire. He will destroy them and He will subdue them before you, so that you may drive them out and destroy them quickly, just as the Lord has spoken to you.

Sábelo bien: el Señor tu Dios es quien hoy pasa al frente de ti, como un fuego consumidor que delante de ti los destruirá y los humillará, y tú los desalojarás y los destruirás enseguida, tal y como el Señor te lo ha dicho.

4 “ Do not say in your heart when the Lord your God has driven them out before you, ‘Because of my righteousness the Lord has brought me in to possess this land,’ but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is dispossessing them before you.

»Cuando el Señor tu Dios los haya expulsado de tu presencia, no pienses en tu corazón: “El Señor me ha traído a tomar posesión de esta tierra por causa de mi justicia”; porque en realidad el Señor va a expulsar de tu presencia a esas naciones por causa de su impiedad.

5 I t is not for your righteousness or for the uprightness of your heart that you are going to possess their land, but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord your God is driving them out before you, in order to confirm the oath which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

No es por causa de tu justicia, ni por la rectitud de tu corazón, por lo que entras a tomar posesión del territorio de estas naciones. El Señor tu Dios las arroja de tu presencia por causa de su impiedad, y para confirmar la promesa que él mismo les hizo a tus padres Abrahán, Isaac y Jacob. La rebelión de Israel en Horeb

6 “ Know, then, it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stubborn people.

»Debes saber que, si el Señor tu Dios te da posesión de esta bella tierra, no es por causa de tu justicia, pues lo cierto es que tú eres un pueblo muy obstinado.

7 R emember, do not forget how you provoked the Lord your God to wrath in the wilderness; from the day that you left the land of Egypt until you arrived at this place, you have been rebellious against the Lord.

Acuérdate, y nunca olvides, que en el desierto provocaste la ira del Señor tu Dios, y que desde el día que salieron de Egipto hasta que entraron en este lugar, han sido rebeldes al Señor.

8 E ven at Horeb you provoked the Lord to wrath, and the Lord was so angry with you that He would have destroyed you.

En Horeb provocaron ustedes la ira del Señor, y el Señor se enojó contra ustedes y quiso destruirlos.

9 W hen I went up to the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which the Lord had made with you, then I remained on the mountain forty days and nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water.

Cuando yo subí al monte para recibir las tablas de piedra, es decir, las tablas del pacto que el Señor hizo con ustedes, estuve en el monte cuarenta días y cuarenta noches sin comer pan ni beber agua.

10 T he Lord gave me the two tablets of stone written by the finger of God; and on them were all the words which the Lord had spoken with you at the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly.

El Señor me dio entonces las dos tablas de piedra escritas con su propio dedo, y en ellas estaban escritas todas las palabras que el día de la asamblea el Señor les comunicó en el monte, de en medio del fuego.

11 I t came about at the end of forty days and nights that the Lord gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant.

Al final de los cuarenta días y las cuarenta noches, el Señor me dio las dos tablas de piedra, las tablas del pacto,

12 T hen the Lord said to me, ‘Arise, go down from here quickly, for your people whom you brought out of Egypt have acted corruptly. They have quickly turned aside from the way which I commanded them; they have made a molten image for themselves.’

y me dijo: “Anda, baja pronto de aquí, porque el pueblo que sacaste de Egipto se ha corrompido. Muy pronto se han apartado del camino que yo les mandé seguir, y se han hecho una imagen fundida.”

13 T he Lord spoke further to me, saying, ‘I have seen this people, and indeed, it is a stubborn people.

»El Señor también me dijo: “He observado a ese pueblo, y puedo ver que es un pueblo muy obstinado.

14 L et Me alone, that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven; and I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.’

¡Déjame que los destruya! Voy a borrar su nombre de debajo del cielo, y a ti te pondré al frente de una nación más fuerte y mucho más numerosa que ellos.”

15 “ So I turned and came down from the mountain while the mountain was burning with fire, and the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands.

Yo bajé del monte trayendo las tablas del pacto en mis dos manos, mientras el monte ardía en llamas. Al volver,

16 A nd I saw that you had indeed sinned against the Lord your God. You had made for yourselves a molten calf; you had turned aside quickly from the way which the Lord had commanded you.

me encontré con que ustedes habían pecado contra el Señor su Dios; muy pronto se habían apartado del camino que el Señor les había mandado seguir, y se habían hecho un becerro de fundición.

17 I took hold of the two tablets and threw them from my hands and smashed them before your eyes.

Tomé entonces las dos tablas que traía en las manos, y las arrojé y quebré a la vista de ustedes.

18 I fell down before the Lord, as at the first, forty days and nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water, because of all your sin which you had committed in doing what was evil in the sight of the Lord to provoke Him to anger.

Luego me postré delante del Señor cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, como antes lo había hecho, y por causa del gran pecado que ustedes habían cometido no comí pan ni bebí agua, pues ustedes hicieron mal a los ojos del Señor e hicieron que se enojara.

19 F or I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure with which the Lord was wrathful against you in order to destroy you, but the Lord listened to me that time also.

El Señor estaba muy enojado contra ustedes y quiso destruirlos. Era tal su furor y su ira que yo tuve miedo. Pero incluso esta vez el Señor me escuchó.

20 T he Lord was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him; so I also prayed for Aaron at the same time.

»El Señor también se enojó en gran manera contra Aarón, y quería destruirlo; pero en aquella ocasión también oré por él.

21 I took your sinful thing, the calf which you had made, and burned it with fire and crushed it, grinding it very small until it was as fine as dust; and I threw its dust into the brook that came down from the mountain.

Luego tomé el objeto de su pecado, el becerro que ustedes habían hecho, y lo arrojé al fuego; lo molí muy bien y lo desmenucé hasta reducirlo a polvo, y luego eché ese polvo en el arroyo que bajaba del monte.

22 “ Again at Taberah and at Massah and at Kibroth-hattaavah you provoked the Lord to wrath.

»También en Tabera, en Masah y en Quibrot Hatavá provocaron ustedes la ira del Señor.

23 W hen the Lord sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, ‘ Go up and possess the land which I have given you,’ then you rebelled against the command of the Lord your God; you neither believed Him nor listened to His voice.

Y también fueron rebeldes al mandato del Señor su Dios cuando, desde Cadés Barnea, el Señor los envió y les dijo: “Vayan a tomar posesión de la tierra que yo les he dado.” Y es que ustedes no le creyeron, ni obedecieron sus órdenes.

24 Y ou have been rebellious against the Lord from the day I knew you.

Desde el día que los conocí, ustedes se han rebelado contra el Señor.

25 “ So I fell down before the Lord the forty days and nights, which I did because the Lord had said He would destroy you.

»Entonces me postré delante del Señor, y estuve así cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, porque el Señor dijo que los iba a destruir.

26 I prayed to the Lord and said, ‘O Lord God, do not destroy Your people, even Your inheritance, whom You have redeemed through Your greatness, whom You have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand.

Yo oré al Señor, y le dije: “Señor y Dios, ¡no destruyas a tu propio pueblo! Con tu grandeza tú lo has rescatado; ¡lo sacaste de Egipto con mano poderosa!

27 R emember Your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; do not look at the stubbornness of this people or at their wickedness or their sin.

Acuérdate de tus siervos Abrahán, Isaac y Jacob, y no te fijes en la terquedad de este pueblo, ni en su impiedad y pecado,

28 O therwise the land from which You brought us may say, “ Because the Lord was not able to bring them into the land which He had promised them and because He hated them He has brought them out to slay them in the wilderness.”

no sea que los de la tierra de donde nos sacaste digan: ‘El Señor no pudo introducirlos en la tierra que les había prometido; más bien, los sacó para matarlos en el desierto porque los aborrecía.’

29 Y et they are Your people, even Your inheritance, whom You have brought out by Your great power and Your outstretched arm.’

¡Pero ellos son tu pueblo! ¡Son tuyos! ¡Tú los sacaste con tu gran poder y con tu brazo extendido!”
