1 N ow King David was old, advanced in age; and they covered him with clothes, but he could not keep warm.

Cuando el rey David ya era muy anciano, no lograba entrar en calor por más que lo cubrieran.

2 S o his servants said to him, “Let them seek a young virgin for my lord the king, and let her attend the king and become his nurse; and let her lie in your bosom, that my lord the king may keep warm.”

Sus siervos le sugirieron: «Que se busque a una joven aún virgen, para que esté siempre abrigando a Su Majestad y durmiendo a su lado. Así Su Majestad entrará en calor.»

3 S o they searched for a beautiful girl throughout all the territory of Israel, and found Abishag the Shunammite, and brought her to the king.

Se recorrió entonces toda la tierra de Israel, y finalmente hallaron en Sunén una hermosa joven, llamada Abisag, y se la llevaron al rey.

4 T he girl was very beautiful; and she became the king’s nurse and served him, but the king did not cohabit with her.

Esa joven era muy hermosa y servicial, pero el rey nunca tuvo relaciones con ella. Adonías usurpa el trono

5 N ow Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, “I will be king.” So he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen with fifty men to run before him.

Adonías, el hijo de Jaguit, se rebeló y decidió proclamarse rey. Se hizo de carros de guerra y de gente de a caballo, y se hizo acompañar de cincuenta hombres que le abrían paso.

6 H is father had never crossed him at any time by asking, “Why have you done so?” And he was also a very handsome man, and he was born after Absalom.

David nunca le había llamado la atención, ni lo había reprendido por su comportamiento. Además, Adonías era un joven muy apuesto y había nacido después de Absalón.

7 H e had conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest; and following Adonijah they helped him.

Adonías se había confabulado con Joab hijo de Seruyá y con el sacerdote Abiatar, que lo apoyaban.

8 B ut Zadok the priest, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei, Rei, and the mighty men who belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.

Por el contrario, ni el sacerdote Sadoc ni Benaías hijo de Joyadá, ni el profeta Natán ni Simey, ni su hombre de confianza ni sus consejeros apoyaban el proyecto de Adonías.

9 A donijah sacrificed sheep and oxen and fatlings by the stone of Zoheleth, which is beside En-rogel; and he invited all his brothers, the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah, the king’s servants.

Pero Adonías preparó un banquete junto a la peña de Zojélet, cerca de la fuente de Roguel, y mató ovejas y vacas y terneros engordados e invitó a todos sus hermanos, hijos del rey David, y a todos los varones de Judá al servicio del rey.

10 B ut he did not invite Nathan the prophet, Benaiah, the mighty men, and Solomon his brother. Nathan and Bathsheba

Sin embargo, no invitó al profeta Natán ni a Benaías, ni a los hombres importantes, y tampoco a su hermano Salomón.

11 T hen Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, “Have you not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith has become king, and David our lord does not know it ?

Entonces Natán habló con Betsabé, la madre de Salomón, y le dijo: «¿Ya te enteraste que Adonías, el hijo de Jaguit, se ha proclamado rey, a espaldas de nuestro señor David?

12 S o now come, please let me give you counsel and save your life and the life of your son Solomon.

Si quieres salvar tu vida y la de tu hijo Salomón, te ruego que hagas lo que te voy a aconsejar.

13 G o at once to King David and say to him, ‘Have you not, my lord, O king, sworn to your maidservant, saying, “ Surely Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he shall sit on my throne”? Why then has Adonijah become king?’

Preséntate ahora mismo ante el rey David, y dile: “¿Recuerda Su Majestad la promesa que le hizo a esta sierva suya, de que mi hijo Salomón sería rey después de Su Majestad, y que él ocuparía el trono? ¿Por qué, entonces, Adonías es el nuevo rey?”

14 “ Behold, while you are still there speaking with the king, I will come in after you and confirm your words.”

Y mientras tú estés hablando con el rey, yo entraré y confirmaré tus palabras.»

15 S o Bathsheba went in to the king in the bedroom. Now the king was very old, and Abishag the Shunammite was ministering to the king.

Betsabé fue a ver al rey en su habitación. Como éste era ya muy anciano, Abisag la sunamita lo atendía en todo.

16 T hen Bathsheba bowed and prostrated herself before the king. And the king said, “What do you wish?”

Abisag se inclinó ante el rey, e hizo una reverencia. Y el rey le preguntó: «¿Te pasa algo?»

17 S he said to him, “My lord, you swore to your maidservant by the Lord your God, saying, ‘ Surely your son Solomon shall be king after me and he shall sit on my throne.’

Betsabé le respondió: «Su Majestad juró a esta sierva suya, poniendo por testigo al Señor su Dios, que mi hijo Salomón reinaría después de Su Majestad, y que él ocuparía el trono.

18 N ow, behold, Adonijah is king; and now, my lord the king, you do not know it.

Pero al parecer Su Majestad ignora que Adonías se ha proclamado rey.

19 H e has sacrificed oxen and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the sons of the king and Abiathar the priest and Joab the commander of the army, but he has not invited Solomon your servant.

Adonías ha hecho un banquete, y ha matado bueyes y terneros engordados, y muchas ovejas, y ha invitado a todos los hijos de Su Majestad, y al sacerdote Abiatar y a Joab, general del ejército, pero no invitó a Salomón, siervo de Su Majestad.

20 A s for you now, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, to tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.

Mientras esto sucede, todo el pueblo está esperando la decisión de Su Majestad, en cuanto a quién ocupará el trono.

21 O therwise it will come about, as soon as my lord the king sleeps with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon will be considered offenders.”

Si Su Majestad no se pronuncia al respecto, cuando mi señor y rey vaya a reunirse con sus antepasados, mi hijo Salomón y yo seremos perseguidos como culpables.»

22 B ehold, while she was still speaking with the king, Nathan the prophet came in.

Mientras Betsabé hablaba con el rey, llegó el profeta Natán.

23 T hey told the king, saying, “Here is Nathan the prophet.” And when he came in before the king, he prostrated himself before the king with his face to the ground.

Entonces los siervos del rey dieron aviso de su llegada, y cuando Natán se presentó ante el rey se inclinó hasta tocar el suelo,

24 T hen Nathan said, “My lord the king, have you said, ‘Adonijah shall be king after me, and he shall sit on my throne’?

mientras decía: «¿Su Majestad ha dispuesto que Adonías suceda a Su Majestad en el trono?

25 F or he has gone down today and has sacrificed oxen and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the king’s sons and the commanders of the army and Abiathar the priest, and behold, they are eating and drinking before him; and they say, ‘ Long live King Adonijah!’

Porque hoy está celebrando un gran banquete; ha matado bueyes y terneros engordados y muchas ovejas, y ha invitado a todos los hijos de Su Majestad, y a los capitanes del ejército y al sacerdote Abiatar. En este momento están comiendo y bebiendo con él, mientras gritan: “¡Viva Adonías, nuestro rey!”

26 B ut me, even me your servant, and Zadok the priest and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada and your servant Solomon, he has not invited.

¡Pero ninguno de los siervos de Su Majestad ha sido invitado! ¡Ni el sacerdote Sadoc, ni Benaías hijo de Joyadá, ni Salomón!

27 H as this thing been done by my lord the king, and you have not shown to your servants who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?”

¿Acaso este asunto de la sucesión del trono lo ha ordenado Su Majestad, y ha olvidado comunicarlo a sus siervos?» David proclama rey a Salomón

28 T hen King David said, “Call Bathsheba to me.” And she came into the king’s presence and stood before the king.

El rey mandó llamar a Betsabé, y ella entró y se detuvo ante el rey.

29 T he king vowed and said, “ As the Lord lives, who has redeemed my life from all distress,

Entonces el rey hizo este juramento: «Juro por el Señor, que me ha librado de toda angustia,

30 s urely as I vowed to you by the Lord the God of Israel, saying, ‘Your son Solomon shall be king after me, and he shall sit on my throne in my place’; I will indeed do so this day.”

que yo te prometí delante del Señor, el Dios de Israel, que tu hijo Salomón reinaría después de mí, y que él se sentaría en mi trono. Hoy cumplo mi promesa.»

31 T hen Bathsheba bowed with her face to the ground, and prostrated herself before the king and said, “ May my lord King David live forever.”

Betsabé se arrodilló ante el rey con el rostro hacia el suelo, y haciendo una reverencia dijo: «¡Que Su Majestad, el rey David, viva por siempre!»

32 T hen King David said, “Call to me Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada.” And they came into the king’s presence.

Luego, el rey David dijo: «Que vengan aquí el sacerdote Sadoc, el profeta Natán, y Benaías hijo de Joyadá.» Cuando ellos se presentaron ante el rey,

33 T he king said to them, “Take with you the servants of your lord, and have my son Solomon ride on my own mule, and bring him down to Gihon.

éste dijo: «Llévense a mis siervos, monten en mi mula a mi hijo Salomón, y llévenlo a Guijón.

34 L et Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there as king over Israel, and blow the trumpet and say, ‘ Long live King Solomon!’

Allí, el sacerdote Sadoc y el profeta Natán lo consagrarán como rey de Israel. Tocarán las trompetas y gritarán: “¡Viva el rey Salomón!”

35 T hen you shall come up after him, and he shall come and sit on my throne and be king in my place; for I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and Judah.”

Después de eso, ustedes lo escoltarán; y cuando él llegue aquí, se sentará en mi trono y reinará en mi lugar, porque yo lo he elegido como príncipe de Israel y de Judá.»

36 B enaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king and said, “Amen! Thus may the Lord, the God of my lord the king, say.

Benaías hijo de Joyadá dijo entonces al rey: «Así será. Y que el Señor, el Dios de Su Majestad, así lo confirme.

37 A s the Lord has been with my lord the king, so may He be with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David!” Solomon Anointed King

Que así como el Señor ha estado con Su Majestad, esté también con Salomón, y que haga prosperar su reinado aún más que el reinado de Su Majestad, el rey David.»

38 S o Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon ride on King David’s mule, and brought him to Gihon.

El sacerdote Sadoc, el profeta Natán, Benaías hijo de Joyadá, y los cretenses y peleteos, fueron por la mula del rey David para que Salomón la montara, y luego partieron rumbo a Guijón.

39 Z adok the priest then took the horn of oil from the tent and anointed Solomon. Then they blew the trumpet, and all the people said, “ Long live King Solomon!”

Allí, el sacerdote Sadoc tomó del santuario el recipiente con el aceite y ungió a Salomón. Se tocó entonces la trompeta, y todo el pueblo gritó: «¡Viva el rey Salomón!»

40 A ll the people went up after him, and the people were playing on flutes and rejoicing with great joy, so that the earth shook at their noise.

Enseguida, todo el pueblo lo siguió, mientras cantaba alegremente al son de las flautas. Era tal el alborozo que la tierra parecía hundirse por causa de su clamor.

41 N ow Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they finished eating. When Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, “Why is the city making such an uproar?”

Adonías y sus invitados ya habían terminado de comer cuando les llegó la noticia. Y cuando Joab escuchó las trompetas, preguntó: «¿Por qué está tan alborotada la ciudad? ¿A qué viene ese escándalo?»

42 W hile he was still speaking, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came. Then Adonijah said, “Come in, for you are a valiant man and bring good news.”

No había terminado de hablar cuando llegó Jonatán, el hijo del sacerdote Abiatar. Al verlo, Adonías le dijo: «¡Adelante, valiente! Seguramente me traes buenas noticias.»

43 B ut Jonathan replied to Adonijah, “No! Our lord King David has made Solomon king.

Y Jonatán le dijo: «La noticia es que nuestro señor, el rey David, acaba de nombrar rey a Salomón.

44 T he king has also sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites; and they have made him ride on the king’s mule.

El rey ordenó al sacerdote Sadoc, al profeta Natán, a Benaías hijo de Joyadá, y a los cretenses y peleteos, que montaran a Salomón sobre su propia mula,

45 Z adok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon, and they have come up from there rejoicing, so that the city is in an uproar. This is the noise which you have heard.

y ellos así lo hicieron, y el sacerdote Sadoc y el profeta Natán lo ungieron con aceite y lo consagraron en Guijón como rey; luego regresaron a la ciudad, y todo el pueblo celebra esto con gran alegría y alboroto. Ésa es la causa del estruendo que aquí se escucha.

46 B esides, Solomon has even taken his seat on the throne of the kingdom.

Pero además, Salomón ya se ha sentado en el trono del reino,

47 M oreover, the king’s servants came to bless our lord King David, saying, ‘May your God make the name of Solomon better than your name and his throne greater than your throne!’ And the king bowed himself on the bed.

y los siervos del rey fueron a nuestro señor, el rey David, diciendo: “Que el Señor conceda al nombre de Salomón más fama que al de Su Majestad, y que dé a su reinado mayor grandeza que al de Su Majestad.” El rey adoró al Señor en su cama,

48 T he king has also said thus, ‘Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who has granted one to sit on my throne today while my own eyes see it.’”

y dijo: “Bendito sea el Señor, Dios de Israel, que me ha permitido ver hoy al que ocupará mi trono.”»

49 T hen all the guests of Adonijah were terrified; and they arose and each went on his way.

Cuando los invitados de Adonías escucharon esto, temblando de miedo se levantaron y se fueron a sus casas.

50 A nd Adonijah was afraid of Solomon, and he arose, went and took hold of the horns of the altar.

Adonías, lleno de miedo por lo que Salomón pudiera hacer, corrió al santuario y se agarró de los cuernos del altar.

51 N ow it was told Solomon, saying, “Behold, Adonijah is afraid of King Solomon, for behold, he has taken hold of the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon swear to me today that he will not put his servant to death with the sword.’”

Algunos fueron a decirle a Salomón: «Adonías tiene miedo del rey Salomón. Ha ido a agarrarse de los cuernos del altar, y suplica: “Que me jure el rey Salomón que no matará a este siervo suyo.”»

52 S olomon said, “If he is a worthy man, not one of his hairs will fall to the ground; but if wickedness is found in him, he will die.”

Salomón dijo: «Si él es un hombre de bien, ni uno solo de sus cabellos caerá al suelo; pero si ha actuado mal, morirá.»

53 S o King Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and prostrated himself before King Solomon, and Solomon said to him, “Go to your house.”

Entonces el rey Salomón mandó que fueran por él y lo sacaran del santuario. Y cuando Adonías llegó a palacio, se inclinó ante el rey Salomón, quien al verlo, le dijo: «Vete a tu casa.»
