1 I n the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,

Durante el cuarto año del reinado de Joacín hijo de Josías, en Judá, la palabra del Señor vino a Jeremías, y le dijo:

2 “ Take a scroll and write on it all the words which I have spoken to you concerning Israel and concerning Judah, and concerning all the nations, from the day I first spoke to you, from the days of Josiah, even to this day.

«Toma un rollo de cuero, y escribe en él cada una de las palabras que te he comunicado en contra de Israel y de Judá, y en contra de todas las naciones, desde los días de Josías, que fue cuando comencé a hablarte, hasta el día de hoy.

3 P erhaps the house of Judah will hear all the calamity which I plan to bring on them, in order that every man will turn from his evil way; then I will forgive their iniquity and their sin.”

Tal vez la casa de Judá preste atención a todo el mal que yo pienso hacerles, y cada uno de ellos se aparte de su mal camino. Entonces yo les perdonaré su maldad y su pecado.»

4 T hen Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote on a scroll at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the Lord which He had spoken to him.

Jeremías llamó entonces a Baruc hijo de Nerías, y Baruc escribió en un rollo de cuero todo lo que Jeremías le dictó, y que eran las palabras que el Señor le había comunicado.

5 J eremiah commanded Baruch, saying, “I am restricted; I cannot go into the house of the Lord.

Después Jeremías le dijo a Baruc: «A mí se me ha prohibido entrar en la casa del Señor.

6 S o you go and read from the scroll which you have written at my dictation the words of the Lord to the people in the Lord’s house on a fast day. And also you shall read them to all the people of Judah who come from their cities.

Así que entra tú en ella, y en el día del ayuno lee ante el pueblo las palabras del Señor, que yo te he dictado y que están en este rollo. Léelas también en presencia de todos los de Judá, que vienen de sus ciudades.

7 P erhaps their supplication will come before the Lord, and everyone will turn from his evil way, for great is the anger and the wrath that the Lord has pronounced against this people.”

Tal vez la oración de ellos llegue a la presencia del Señor, y cada uno de ellos se aparte de su mal camino. Porque son demasiado grandes el furor y la ira que el Señor ha manifestado contra este pueblo.»

8 B aruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, reading from the book the words of the Lord in the Lord’s house.

Baruc hijo de Nerías cumplió con todo lo que el profeta Jeremías le mandó hacer, y en el templo leyó del rollo de cuero las palabras del Señor.

9 N ow in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, all the people in Jerusalem and all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem proclaimed a fast before the Lord.

En el mes noveno del año quinto del reinado de Joacín hijo de Josías, en Judá, en la presencia del Señor se promulgó ayuno a todo el pueblo de Jerusalén y a todos los que venían de las ciudades de Judá a Jerusalén.

10 T hen Baruch read from the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the Lord in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe, in the upper court, at the entry of the New Gate of the Lord’s house, to all the people.

Baruc leyó entonces en la casa del Señor las palabras de Jeremías que estaban en el rollo de cuero. Lo hizo en presencia del pueblo, desde el aposento del escriba Gemarías hijo de Safán, que estaba en el atrio superior, a la entrada de la puerta nueva de la casa del Señor.

11 N ow when Micaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heard all the words of the Lord from the book,

Cuando Micaías hijo de Gemarías, hijo de Safán, oyó la lectura de todas las palabras del Señor,

12 h e went down to the king’s house, into the scribe’s chamber. And behold, all the officials were sitting there— Elishama the scribe, and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the other officials.

se dirigió al palacio del rey y entró en el aposento del secretario. Allí estaban sentados todos los príncipes, es decir: el secretario Elisama, Delaía hijo de Semaías, Elnatán hijo de Acbor, Gemarías hijo de Safán, Sedequías hijo de Jananías, y todos los príncipes.

13 M icaiah declared to them all the words that he had heard when Baruch read from the book to the people.

Allí Micaías les contó todo lo que había oído cuando Baruc dio lectura al rollo de cuero en presencia del pueblo.

14 T hen all the officials sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying, “Take in your hand the scroll from which you have read to the people and come.” So Baruch the son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand and went to them.

Entonces todos los príncipes enviaron a Yehudí hijo de Netanías, hijo de Selemías, hijo de Cusi, para que le dijera a Baruc que tomara el rollo que había leído ante el pueblo y se presentara ante ellos. Entonces Baruc hijo de Nerías tomó el rollo de cuero y fue a verlos.

15 T hey said to him, “Sit down, please, and read it to us.” So Baruch read it to them.

Allí los príncipes le dijeron: «Siéntate, por favor, y léenos el rollo.» Y Baruc se lo leyó.

16 W hen they had heard all the words, they turned in fear one to another and said to Baruch, “We will surely report all these words to the king.”

En cuanto los príncipes oyeron todo aquello, cada uno miró espantado a su compañero, y le dijeron a Baruc: «Tenemos que informar al rey de todo esto.»

17 A nd they asked Baruch, saying, “Tell us, please, how did you write all these words? Was it at his dictation?”

Luego le preguntaron a Baruc: «Ahora, cuéntanos cómo fue que escribiste todas estas palabras de labios de Jeremías.»

18 T hen Baruch said to them, “He dictated all these words to me, and I wrote them with ink on the book.”

Y Baruc les contestó: «Jeremías me dictaba todas estas palabras, y yo las iba escribiendo en el rollo.»

19 T hen the officials said to Baruch, “Go, hide yourself, you and Jeremiah, and do not let anyone know where you are.” The Scroll Is Burned

Entonces los príncipes le aconsejaron a Baruc: «Pues corran a esconderse, tú y Jeremías, y que nadie sepa dónde se encuentran.»

20 S o they went to the king in the court, but they had deposited the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe, and they reported all the words to the king.

Luego de depositar el rollo en el aposento del secretario Elisama, los príncipes se dirigieron al atrio, donde estaba el rey, y allí le informaron al rey acerca de todas estas palabras.

21 T hen the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and he took it out of the chamber of Elishama the scribe. And Jehudi read it to the king as well as to all the officials who stood beside the king.

Entonces el rey ordenó a Yehudí que fuera por el rollo, y éste fue y lo tomó del aposento del secretario Elisama, y lo leyó ante el rey y ante todos los príncipes que le hacían compañía.

22 N ow the king was sitting in the winter house in the ninth month, with a fire burning in the brazier before him.

Era el mes noveno, y el rey estaba en la casa de invierno. Delante de él había un brasero encendido.

23 W hen Jehudi had read three or four columns, the king cut it with a scribe’s knife and threw it into the fire that was in the brazier, until all the scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the brazier.

Yehudí habría leído tres o cuatro columnas del texto, cuando el rey rasgó el rollo con un cortaplumas de escriba, y lo arrojó al fuego que había en el brasero, hasta que todo el rollo se consumió.

24 Y et the king and all his servants who heard all these words were not afraid, nor did they rend their garments.

Cuando el rey y sus siervos oyeron todas estas palabras, no mostraron ningún temor ni se rasgaron los vestidos.

25 E ven though Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah pleaded with the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them.

Elnatán, Delaía y Gemarías le rogaron al rey que no quemara el rollo, pero el rey no les hizo caso;

26 A nd the king commanded Jerahmeel the king’s son, Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel to seize Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet, but the Lord hid them. The Scroll Is Replaced

al contrario, mandó a Yeramel hijo de Hamelec, a Seraías hijo de Azriel y a Selemías hijo de Abdel, para que aprehendieran al escriba Baruc y al profeta Jeremías, pero el Señor los escondió.

27 T hen the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah after the king had burned the scroll and the words which Baruch had written at the dictation of Jeremiah, saying,

Después de que el rey quemó el rollo con las palabras que Jeremías le dictó a Baruc, y que éste había escrito, la palabra del Señor vino a Jeremías, y le dijo:

28 “ Take again another scroll and write on it all the former words that were on the first scroll which Jehoiakim the king of Judah burned.

«Vuelve a tomar otro rollo, y escribe en él todas las palabras que ya estaban escritas en el primer rollo que quemó Joacín rey de Judá.

29 A nd concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say, ‘Thus says the Lord, “You have burned this scroll, saying, ‘ Why have you written on it that the king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land, and will make man and beast to cease from it?’”

Y dile de mi parte: “Tú, Joacín rey de Judá, quemaste este rollo, y objetaste el hecho de que allí estuviera escrito que el rey de Babilonia vendrá y destruirá esta tierra, hasta que no queden en ella ni hombres ni animales.

30 T herefore thus says the Lord concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah, “He shall have no one to sit on the throne of David, and his dead body shall be cast out to the heat of the day and the frost of the night.

Por lo tanto, yo, el Señor, te digo a ti, Joacín rey de Judá: Ningún descendiente tuyo te sucederá en el trono de David. Además, tu cadáver quedará expuesto al calor del día y al frío de la noche.

31 I will also punish him and his descendants and his servants for their iniquity, and I will bring on them and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the men of Judah all the calamity that I have declared to them—but they did not listen.”’”

Por no haberme hecho caso, voy a castigarte por tu maldad, y también castigaré a tus descendientes y a tus siervos; voy a traer sobre ellos, y sobre los habitantes de Jerusalén y de Judá, todo el mal que les he anunciado.”»

32 T hen Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the son of Neriah, the scribe, and he wrote on it at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire; and many similar words were added to them.

Jeremías tomó otro rollo, y se lo dio al escriba Baruc hijo de Nerías; éste, por su parte, escribió en él todas las palabras que Jeremías le había dictado antes, y que estaban escritas en el rollo que el rey Joacín de Judá quemó en el fuego, ¡y aun fueron añadidas a ellas muchas otras palabras semejantes!
