1 T hese are the words of the covenant which the Lord commanded Moses to make with the sons of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant which He had made with them at Horeb.

Éstas son las palabras del pacto que el Señor ordenó a Moisés celebrar en Moab con los hijos de Israel, además del pacto que concertó con ellos en Horeb.

2 A nd Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “You have seen all that the Lord did before your eyes in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh and all his servants and all his land;

Moisés llamó a todos los israelitas, y les dijo: «Ustedes han visto con sus propios ojos todo lo que el Señor ha hecho en la tierra de Egipto con el faraón y con todos sus siervos, y con todo su país.

3 t he great trials which your eyes have seen, those great signs and wonders.

Ustedes son testigos de esas grandes pruebas y señales y maravillas.

4 Y et to this day the Lord has not given you a heart to know, nor eyes to see, nor ears to hear.

Pero hasta este día el Señor no les ha dado la capacidad de entender, ni de ver ni de oír.

5 I have led you forty years in the wilderness; your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandal has not worn out on your foot.

Durante cuarenta años yo los he conducido por el desierto, y ni la ropa ni las sandalias que llevan puestas se les han gastado,

6 Y ou have not eaten bread, nor have you drunk wine or strong drink, in order that you might know that I am the Lord your God.

y para que sepan que yo soy el Señor su Dios, tampoco han tenido que comer pan ni beber vino o sidra.

7 W hen you reached this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon and Og the king of Bashan came out to meet us for battle, but we defeated them;

Cuando ustedes llegaron a este lugar, el rey Sijón de Jesbón y el rey Og de Basán nos salieron al encuentro para pelear contra nosotros, y los derrotamos;

8 a nd we took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of the Manassites.

luego tomamos posesión de su tierra, y la entregamos a Rubén y a Gad y a la media tribu de Manasés como su propiedad.

9 S o keep the words of this covenant to do them, that you may prosper in all that you do.

Así que ustedes deben cumplir con las palabras de este pacto, y ponerlas por obra, para que prosperen en todo lo que hagan.

10 “ You stand today, all of you, before the Lord your God: your chiefs, your tribes, your elders and your officers, even all the men of Israel,

»Este día todos ustedes, los varones de Israel, están en presencia del Señor su Dios: tanto los jefes de tribu como los ancianos y los oficiales,

11 y our little ones, your wives, and the alien who is within your camps, from the one who chops your wood to the one who draws your water,

lo mismo que sus niños y sus mujeres, y los extranjeros que habitan entre ustedes, desde los que cortan la leña hasta los que acarrean el agua,

12 t hat you may enter into the covenant with the Lord your God, and into His oath which the Lord your God is making with you today,

y esto es para que entren en el pacto del Señor su Dios, y en el juramento que el Señor su Dios hace hoy con ustedes,

13 i n order that He may establish you today as His people and that He may be your God, just as He spoke to you and as He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

para confirmarlos hoy como su pueblo, y para que él sea su Dios, tal y como él lo ha dicho y jurado a Abrahán, Isaac y Jacob, los antepasados de ustedes.

14 “ Now not with you alone am I making this covenant and this oath,

Este pacto y este juramento no lo hago solamente con ustedes;

15 b ut both with those who stand here with us today in the presence of the Lord our God and with those who are not with us here today

lo hago delante del Señor nuestro Dios con los que hoy están aquí presentes con nosotros, y también con los que no están hoy aquí con nosotros.

16 ( for you know how we lived in the land of Egypt, and how we came through the midst of the nations through which you passed;

»Ustedes saben cómo vivíamos en Egipto, y cómo hemos pasado por en medio de las naciones que hemos encontrado a nuestro paso;

17 m oreover, you have seen their abominations and their idols of wood, stone, silver, and gold, which they had with them);

ustedes han visto sus hechos repugnantes, y los ídolos de madera, piedra, plata y oro, que tienen consigo.

18 s o that there will not be among you a man or woman, or family or tribe, whose heart turns away today from the Lord our God, to go and serve the gods of those nations; that there will not be among you a root bearing poisonous fruit and wormwood.

No vaya a ser que alguno de ustedes, hombre o mujer, familia o tribu, aparte hoy su corazón del Señor nuestro Dios y vaya y sirva a los dioses de esas naciones. No vaya a ser que haya entre ustedes alguna raíz que produzca hiel y ajenjo,

19 I t shall be when he hears the words of this curse, that he will boast, saying, ‘I have peace though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart in order to destroy the watered land with the dry.’

y que al oír las palabras de esta maldición, él se bendiga a sí mismo y diga: “Aun cuando persista yo en endurecer mi corazón, voy a estar bien,”, pues eso podría perjudicarlos a todos, buenos y malos.

20 T he Lord shall never be willing to forgive him, but rather the anger of the Lord and His jealousy will burn against that man, and every curse which is written in this book will rest on him, and the Lord will blot out his name from under heaven.

El Señor no querrá perdonarlo, sino que su ira y su celo se encenderá contra ese hombre, y caerán sobre él todas las maldiciones escritas en este libro, y el Señor borrará su nombre de debajo del cielo.

21 T hen the Lord will single him out for adversity from all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant which are written in this book of the law.

El Señor lo apartará para mal de todas las tribus de Israel, conforme a todas las maldiciones del pacto escritas en este libro de la ley.

22 “ Now the generation to come, your sons who rise up after you and the foreigner who comes from a distant land, when they see the plagues of the land and the diseases with which the Lord has afflicted it, will say,

Y lo condenarán las generaciones futuras, y los hijos que nazcan después de ustedes, y los extranjeros que vengan de lejanas tierras, al ver las plagas de aquella tierra, y las enfermedades con que el Señor la habrá azotado

23 ‘ All its land is brimstone and salt, a burning waste, unsown and unproductive, and no grass grows in it, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the Lord overthrew in His anger and in His wrath.’

(toda su tierra será calcinada con azufre y sal; no será sembrada ni producirá nada, ni crecerá en ella hierba alguna, como sucedió en la destrucción de Sodoma y de Gomorra, y de Adma y de Zeboyin, a las que el Señor destruyó en el furor de su ira);

24 A ll the nations will say, ‘ Why has the Lord done thus to this land? Why this great outburst of anger?’

más aún, todas las naciones dirán: “¿Por qué hizo esto el Señor con esta tierra? ¿Qué significa el ardor de este gran enojo?”

25 T hen men will say, ‘ Because they forsook the covenant of the Lord, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt.

Y se les responderá: “Es que se apartaron del pacto que el Señor, el Dios de sus padres, concertó con ellos cuando los sacó de Egipto,

26 T hey went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods whom they have not known and whom He had not allotted to them.

y fueron y sirvieron a dioses ajenos, y se inclinaron ante ellos. Eran dioses que nunca antes conocieron, y que nada les habían dado.

27 T herefore, the anger of the Lord burned against that land, to bring upon it every curse which is written in this book;

Por eso se encendió la ira del Señor contra esta tierra, y trajo sobre ella todas las maldiciones escritas en este libro.

28 a nd the Lord uprooted them from their land in anger and in fury and in great wrath, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.’

El Señor los desarraigó de su tierra con gran ira, furor e indignación, y los expulsó a otro país, como hoy se puede ver.”

29 “ The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law.

»Las cosas secretas pertenecen al Señor nuestro Dios, pero las reveladas son para nosotros y para nuestros hijos para siempre, para que cumplamos todas las palabras de esta ley.
