1 N ow the ark of the Lord had been in the country of the Philistines seven months.

El arca del Señor estuvo siete meses en tierra de los filisteos.

2 A nd the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, “What shall we do with the ark of the Lord ? Tell us how we shall send it to its place.”

Ellos llamaron a los sacerdotes y adivinos, y les preguntaron: «¿Qué nos aconsejan hacer con el arca del Señor? Dígannos cómo podemos devolverla a su lugar.»

3 T hey said, “If you send away the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it empty; but you shall surely return to Him a guilt offering. Then you will be healed and it will be known to you why His hand is not removed from you.”

Los sacerdotes dijeron: «Cuando regresen el arca del Dios de Israel a su lugar, no la envíen vacía, sino envíenla con una compensación por la culpa cometida; sólo así serán sanados, y sabrán por qué el poder de Dios se ensañó contra ustedes.»

4 T hen they said, “What shall be the guilt offering which we shall return to Him?” And they said, “Five golden tumors and five golden mice according to the number of the lords of the Philistines, for one plague was on all of you and on your lords.

Entonces ellos preguntaron: «¿Y en qué consiste la compensación que debemos pagar?» Y ellos respondieron: «Deben entregar cinco figuras de tumores de oro, y cinco ratones de oro, conforme al número de los jefes filisteos, porque una misma plaga los afligió a ustedes y a sus jefes.

5 S o you shall make likenesses of your tumors and likenesses of your mice that ravage the land, and you shall give glory to the God of Israel; perhaps He will ease His hand from you, your gods, and your land.

Hagan las figuras de los tumores y de los ratones que destruyen la tierra, y así honrarán al Dios de Israel. Tal vez él se compadezca de ustedes, de sus dioses, y de su tierra.

6 W hy then do you harden your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? When He had severely dealt with them, did they not allow the people to go, and they departed?

¿Por qué son insensibles, como el faraón y los egipcios? Ellos trataron con dureza a los israelitas, pero los dejaron ir, y ellos se fueron.

7 N ow therefore, take and prepare a new cart and two milch cows on which there has never been a yoke; and hitch the cows to the cart and take their calves home, away from them.

Construyan ahora un carro nuevo, y elijan a dos vacas que no hayan llevado antes el yugo, y que estén criando; pónganles el yugo y únzanlas al carro, y no dejen que sus becerros las sigan.

8 T ake the ark of the Lord and place it on the cart; and put the articles of gold which you return to Him as a guilt offering in a box by its side. Then send it away that it may go.

Tomen el arca del Señor, y pónganla sobre el carro. Pongan en una caja las joyas de oro que hicieron como compensación por la culpa cometida; y dejen que el carro se vaya.

9 W atch, if it goes up by the way of its own territory to Beth-shemesh, then He has done us this great evil. But if not, then we will know that it was not His hand that struck us; it happened to us by chance.”

Pero fíjense qué rumbo toma el carro: si se va por el camino que lleva a Bet Semes, su tierra, eso querrá decir que fue el Señor quien nos mandó tan grandes males; pero si toma otro camino, sabremos que no fue el Señor, sino que lo que sufrimos fue un accidente.»

10 T hen the men did so, and took two milch cows and hitched them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home.

Aquellos hombres lo hicieron así. Tomaron dos vacas que no habían llevado yugo y que estaban criando, las uncieron al carro, y encerraron a sus becerros.

11 T hey put the ark of the Lord on the cart, and the box with the golden mice and the likenesses of their tumors.

Luego pusieron el arca del Señor sobre el carro, y a un lado la caja con los ratones de oro y las figuras de los tumores, como compensación por la culpa cometida, y la dejaron ir.

12 A nd the cows took the straight way in the direction of Beth-shemesh; they went along the highway, lowing as they went, and did not turn aside to the right or to the left. And the lords of the Philistines followed them to the border of Beth-shemesh.

Y las vacas se dirigieron a Bet Semes; iban andando y bramando, sin apartarse del camino, y los jefes de los filisteos las siguieron hasta el límite de Bet Semes.

13 N ow the people of Beth-shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley, and they raised their eyes and saw the ark and were glad to see it.

Los habitantes de Bet Semes estaban en el valle, segando el trigo, y cuando alzaron los ojos y vieron el arca, se alegraron mucho.

14 T he cart came into the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite and stood there where there was a large stone; and they split the wood of the cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to the Lord.

El carro llegó al campo de Josué de Bet Semes, y se detuvo en donde había una gran piedra; entonces ellos tomaron la madera del carro y la partieron, y ofrecieron las vacas como una ofrenda al Señor.

15 T he Levites took down the ark of the Lord and the box that was with it, in which were the articles of gold, and put them on the large stone; and the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices that day to the Lord.

Luego los levitas bajaron el arca del Señor, y la caja que iba junto a ella, donde estaban las joyas de oro, y las pusieron sobre aquella gran piedra. Ese día los habitantes de Bet Semes ofrecieron sacrificios y ofrendas al Señor.

16 W hen the five lords of the Philistines saw it, they returned to Ekron that day.

Cuando los cinco jefes de los filisteos vieron todo esto, regresaron a Ecrón el mismo día.

17 T hese are the golden tumors which the Philistines returned for a guilt offering to the Lord: one for Ashdod, one for Gaza, one for Ashkelon, one for Gath, one for Ekron;

Las figuras de los tumores de oro que los filisteos pagaron como compensación al Señor fueron cinco: una por Asdod, una por Gaza, una por Ascalón, una por Gat, y una por Ecrón.

18 a nd the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fortified cities and of country villages. The large stone on which they set the ark of the Lord is a witness to this day in the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite.

Y las figuras de oro de los ratones que ofrecieron, fueron también cinco, conforme al número de las ciudades de los filisteos que pertenecían a los cinco jefes, tanto las ciudades fortificadas como las aldeas. La gran piedra sobre la que pusieron el arca del Señor permanece en el campo de Josué de Bet Semes hasta el día de hoy.

19 H e struck down some of the men of Beth-shemesh because they had looked into the ark of the Lord. He struck down of all the people, 50, 070 men, and the people mourned because the Lord had struck the people with a great slaughter.

Pero Dios hizo que los hombres de Bet Semes murieran, porque se atrevieron a mirar dentro del arca del Señor. De todo el pueblo murieron cincuenta mil setenta hombres. Y el pueblo lloró porque el Señor los había castigado con tantas muertes,

20 T he men of Beth-shemesh said, “ Who is able to stand before the Lord, this holy God? And to whom shall He go up from us?”

y dijeron: «¿Quién será digno de estar delante del Señor, el Dios santo? ¿Contra quién se ensañará cuando se aparte de nosotros?»

21 S o they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath-jearim, saying, “The Philistines have brought back the ark of the Lord; come down and take it up to you.”

Luego enviaron mensajeros a los habitantes de Quiriat Yearín, para que les dijeran: «Los filisteos han devuelto el arca del Señor. Vengan y llévenla con ustedes.»
