2 C onsider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials,

Tened por sumo gozo, hermanos míos, el que os halléis en diversas pruebas,

3 k nowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.

sabiendo que la prueba de vuestra fe produce paciencia,

4 A nd let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

y que la paciencia tenga su perfecto resultado, para que seáis perfectos y completos, sin que os falte nada.

5 B ut if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

Pero si alguno de vosotros se ve falto de sabiduría, que la pida a Dios, el cual da a todos abundantemente y sin reproche, y le será dada.

6 B ut he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind.

Pero que pida con fe, sin dudar; porque el que duda es semejante a la ola del mar, impulsada por el viento y echada de una parte a otra.

7 F or that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord,

No piense, pues, ese hombre, que recibirá cosa alguna del Señor,

8 b eing a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

siendo hombre de doble ánimo, inestable en todos sus caminos. Lo transitorio de las riquezas

9 B ut the brother of humble circumstances is to glory in his high position;

Pero que el hermano de condición humilde se gloríe en su alta posición,

10 a nd the rich man is to glory in his humiliation, because like flowering grass he will pass away.

y el rico en su humillación, pues él pasará como la flor de la hierba.

11 F or the sun rises with a scorching wind and withers the grass; and its flower falls off and the beauty of its appearance is destroyed; so too the rich man in the midst of his pursuits will fade away.

Porque el sol sale con calor abrasador y seca la hierba, y su flor se cae y la hermosura de su apariencia perece; así también se marchitará el rico en medio de sus empresas. La tentación explicada

12 B lessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

Bienaventurado el hombre que persevera bajo la prueba, porque una vez que ha sido aprobado, recibirá la corona de la vida que el Señor ha prometido a los que le aman.

13 L et no one say when he is tempted, “ I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.

Que nadie diga cuando es tentado: Soy tentado por Dios; porque Dios no puede ser tentado por el mal y El mismo no tienta a nadie.

14 B ut each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.

Sino que cada uno es tentado cuando es llevado y seducido por su propia pasión.

15 T hen when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.

Después, cuando la pasión ha concebido, da a luz el pecado; y cuando el pecado es consumado, engendra la muerte.

16 D o not be deceived, my beloved brethren.

Amados hermanos míos, no os engañéis.

17 E very good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.

Toda buena dádiva y todo don perfecto viene de lo alto, desciende del Padre de las luces, con el cual no hay cambio ni sombra de variación.

18 I n the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures.

En el ejercicio de su voluntad, El nos hizo nacer por la palabra de verdad, para que fuéramos las primicias de sus criaturas. Hacedores de la palabra

19 T his you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger;

Esto sabéis, mis amados hermanos. Pero que cada uno sea pronto para oír, tardo para hablar, tardo para la ira;

20 f or the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God.

pues la ira del hombre no obra la justicia de Dios.

21 T herefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.

Por lo cual, desechando toda inmundicia y todo resto de malicia, recibid con humildad la palabra implantada, que es poderosa para salvar vuestras almas.

22 B ut prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.

Sed hacedores de la palabra y no solamente oidores que se engañan a sí mismos.

23 F or if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror;

Porque si alguno es oidor de la palabra, y no hacedor, es semejante a un hombre que mira su rostro natural en un espejo;

24 f or once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was.

pues después de mirarse a sí mismo e irse, inmediatamente se olvida de qué clase de persona es.

25 B ut one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.

Pero el que mira atentamente a la ley perfecta, la ley de la libertad, y permanece en ella, no habiéndose vuelto un oidor olvidadizo sino un hacedor eficaz, éste será bienaventurado en lo que hace.

26 I f anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is worthless.

Si alguno se cree religioso, pero no refrena su lengua, sino que engaña a su propio corazón, la religión del tal es vana.

27 P ure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

La religión pura y sin mácula delante de nuestro Dios y Padre es ésta: visitar a los huérfanos y a las viudas en sus aflicciones, y guardarse sin mancha del mundo.
