1 A llora Bildad di Suac rispose e disse:

Then Bildad the Shuhite answered,

2 « Fino a quando terrai questi discorsi e saranno le parole della tua bocca come un vento impetuoso?

“How long will you say these things, And the words of your mouth be a mighty wind?

3 P otrebbe Dio pervertire il giudizio? Potrebbe l’Onnipotente pervertire la giustizia?

“Does God pervert justice? Or does the Almighty pervert what is right?

4 S e i tuoi figli hanno peccato contro di lui, egli li ha dati in balìa del loro misfatto;

“ If your sons sinned against Him, Then He delivered them into the power of their transgression.

5 m a tu, se ricorri a Dio e implori l’Onnipotente,

“If you would seek God And implore the compassion of the Almighty,

6 s e proprio sei puro e integro, certo egli sorgerà in tuo favore e restaurerà la tua giusta dimora.

If you are pure and upright, Surely now He would rouse Himself for you And restore your righteous estate.

7 C osì sarà stato piccolo il tuo principio, ma la tua fine sarà grande oltre misura.

“Though your beginning was insignificant, Yet your end will increase greatly.

8 « Interroga le passate generazioni, rifletti sull’esperienza dei padri;

“Please inquire of past generations, And consider the things searched out by their fathers.

9 p oiché noi siamo di ieri e non sappiamo nulla; i nostri giorni sulla terra non sono che un’ombra;

“For we are only of yesterday and know nothing, Because our days on earth are as a shadow.

10 m a quelli certo t’insegneranno, ti parleranno e dal loro cuore trarranno discorsi.

“Will they not teach you and tell you, And bring forth words from their minds?

11 P uò il papiro crescere dove non c’è limo? Forse il giunco viene su senz’acqua?

“Can the papyrus grow up without a marsh? Can the rushes grow without water?

12 M entre sono ancora verdi, e senza che li si tagli, prima di tutte le erbe, inaridiscono.

“While it is still green and not cut down, Yet it withers before any other plant.

13 T ale è la sorte di tutti quelli che dimenticano Dio; la speranza dell’empio perirà.

“So are the paths of all who forget God; And the hope of the godless will perish,

14 L a sua baldanza è troncata, la sua fiducia è come una tela di ragno.

Whose confidence is fragile, And whose trust a spider’s web.

15 E gli si appoggia alla sua casa, ma essa non regge; vi si aggrappa, ma quella non tiene.

“He trusts in his house, but it does not stand; He holds fast to it, but it does not endure.

16 E gli verdeggia al sole, i suoi rami si protendono sul suo giardino,

“He thrives before the sun, And his shoots spread out over his garden.

17 l e sue radici s’intrecciano sul mucchio delle macerie, penetra fra le pietre della casa.

“His roots wrap around a rock pile, He grasps a house of stones.

18 M a divelto che sia dal suo luogo, questo lo rinnega e gli dice: “Non ti ho mai visto!”

“If he is removed from his place, Then it will deny him, saying, ‘ I never saw you.’

19 T ali sono le delizie che gli procura il suo comportamento! Dalla polvere, altri dopo di lui germoglieranno.

“Behold, this is the joy of His way; And out of the dust others will spring.

20 N o, Dio non respinge l’uomo integro, né porge aiuto a quelli che fanno il male.

“Lo, God will not reject a man of integrity, Nor will He support the evildoers.

21 E gli renderà ancora il sorriso alla tua bocca, sulle tue labbra metterà canti d’esultanza.

“He will yet fill your mouth with laughter And your lips with shouting.

22 Q uelli che ti odiano saranno coperti di vergogna, la tenda degli empi sparirà».

“Those who hate you will be clothed with shame, And the tent of the wicked will be no longer.”
