1 C osì furono compiuti i cieli e la terra e tutto l’esercito loro.

Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts.

2 I l settimo giorno Dio compì l’opera che aveva fatta, e si riposò il settimo giorno da tutta l’opera che aveva fatta.

By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.

3 D io benedisse il settimo giorno e lo santificò, perché in esso Dio si riposò da tutta l’opera che aveva creata e fatta.

Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.

4 Q ueste sono le origini dei cieli e della terra quando furono creati. Nel giorno che Dio il Signore fece la terra e i cieli,

This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made earth and heaven.

5 n on c’era ancora sulla terra alcun arbusto della campagna. Nessuna erba della campagna era ancora spuntata, perché Dio il Signore non aveva fatto piovere sulla terra, e non c’era alcun uomo per coltivare il suolo;

Now no shrub of the field was yet in the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for the Lord God had not sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground.

6 m a un vapore saliva dalla terra e bagnava tutta la superficie del suolo.

But a mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground.

7 D io il Signore formò l’uomo dalla polvere della terra, gli soffiò nelle narici un alito vitale e l’uomo divenne un’anima vivente.

Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

8 D io il Signore piantò un giardino in Eden, a oriente, e vi pose l’uomo che aveva formato.

The Lord God planted a garden toward the east, in Eden; and there He placed the man whom He had formed.

9 D io il Signore fece spuntare dal suolo ogni sorta di alberi piacevoli a vedersi e buoni per nutrirsi, tra i quali l’albero della vita in mezzo al giardino e l’albero della conoscenza del bene e del male.

Out of the ground the Lord God caused to grow every tree that is pleasing to the sight and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

10 U n fiume usciva da Eden per irrigare il giardino, e di là si divideva in quattro bracci.

Now a river flowed out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it divided and became four rivers.

11 I l nome del primo è Pison, ed è quello che circonda tutto il paese di Avila, dove c’è l’oro;

The name of the first is Pishon; it flows around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.

12 e l’oro di quel paese è puro; qui si trovano pure il bdellio e l’ònice.

The gold of that land is good; the bdellium and the onyx stone are there.

13 I l nome del secondo fiume è Ghion, ed è quello che circonda tutto il paese di Cus.

The name of the second river is Gihon; it flows around the whole land of Cush.

14 I l nome del terzo fiume è Chiddechel, ed è quello che scorre a oriente dell’Assiria. Il quarto fiume è l’Eufrate.

The name of the third river is Tigris; it flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

15 D io il Signore prese dunque l’uomo e lo pose nel giardino di Eden perché lo lavorasse e lo custodisse.

Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it.

16 D io il Signore ordinò all’uomo: «Mangia pure da ogni albero del giardino,

The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely;

17 m a dell’albero della conoscenza del bene e del male non ne mangiare; perché nel giorno che tu ne mangerai, certamente morirai».

but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”

18 P oi Dio il Signore disse: «Non è bene che l’uomo sia solo; io gli farò un aiuto che sia adatto a lui».

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.”

19 D io il Signore, avendo formato dalla terra tutti gli animali dei campi e tutti gli uccelli del cielo, li condusse all’uomo per vedere come li avrebbe chiamati, e perché ogni essere vivente portasse il nome che l’uomo gli avrebbe dato.

Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name.

20 L ’uomo diede dei nomi a tutto il bestiame, agli uccelli del cielo e ad ogni animale dei campi; ma per l’uomo non si trovò un aiuto che fosse adatto a lui.

The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him.

21 A llora Dio il Signore fece cadere un profondo sonno sull’uomo, che si addormentò; prese una delle costole di lui e richiuse la carne al posto d’essa.

So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place.

22 D io il Signore, con la costola che aveva tolta all’uomo, formò una donna e la condusse all’uomo.

The Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.

23 L ’uomo disse: «Questa, finalmente, è ossa delle mie ossa e carne della mia carne. Ella sarà chiamata donna perché è stata tratta dall’uomo ».

The man said, “ This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.”

24 P erciò l’uomo lascerà suo padre e sua madre e si unirà a sua moglie, e saranno una stessa carne.

For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.

25 L ’uomo e sua moglie erano entrambi nudi e non ne avevano vergogna.

And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
