1 A llora Elifaz di Teman rispose e disse:

Then Eliphaz the Temanite responded,

2 « Può l’uomo recare qualche vantaggio a Dio? No; il savio non reca vantaggio che a se stesso.

“Can a vigorous man be of use to God, Or a wise man be useful to himself?

3 S e sei giusto, ne viene forse qualche vantaggio all’Onnipotente? Se sei integro nella tua condotta, ne trae egli un guadagno?

“Is there any pleasure to the Almighty if you are righteous, Or profit if you make your ways perfect?

4 È forse per la paura che ha di te che egli ti castiga o viene con te in giudizio?

“Is it because of your reverence that He reproves you, That He enters into judgment against you?

5 L a tua malvagità non è forse grande, e le tue iniquità non sono infinite?

“Is not your wickedness great, And your iniquities without end?

6 T u, per un nulla, prendevi pegno dai tuoi fratelli, spogliavi delle loro vesti gli ignudi.

“For you have taken pledges of your brothers without cause, And stripped men naked.

7 A llo stanco non davi da bere l’acqua, all’affamato rifiutavi il pane.

“To the weary you have given no water to drink, And from the hungry you have withheld bread.

8 L a terra apparteneva al più forte, l’uomo influente vi piantava la sua casa.

“But the earth belongs to the mighty man, And the honorable man dwells in it.

9 R imandavi a vuoto le vedove, le braccia degli orfani erano spezzate.

“You have sent widows away empty, And the strength of the orphans has been crushed.

10 E cco perché sei circondato di lacci, spaventato da improvvisi terrori.

“Therefore snares surround you, And sudden dread terrifies you,

11 O non vedi le tenebre che ti avvolgono, la piena d’acque che ti sommerge?

Or darkness, so that you cannot see, And an abundance of water covers you.

12 « Dio non è forse lassù nei cieli? Guarda lassù le stelle eccelse, come stanno in alto!

“Is not God in the height of heaven? Look also at the distant stars, how high they are!

13 E tu dici: “Dio che sa? Può egli giudicare attraverso il buio?

“You say, ‘ What does God know? Can He judge through the thick darkness?

14 F itte nubi lo coprono e nulla vede; egli passeggia sulla vòlta dei cieli”.

‘ Clouds are a hiding place for Him, so that He cannot see; And He walks on the vault of heaven.’

15 V uoi dunque seguire l’antica via per cui camminarono gli uomini malvagi,

“Will you keep to the ancient path Which wicked men have trod,

16 c he furono portati via prima del tempo e il cui fondamento fu come un torrente che scorre?

Who were snatched away before their time, Whose foundations were washed away by a river?

17 E ssi dicevano a Dio: “Allontànati da noi! Che ci può fare l’Onnipotente?”

“They said to God, ‘Depart from us!’ And ‘What can the Almighty do to them?’

18 E ppure Dio aveva riempito le loro case di beni! Ah, lungi da me il consiglio degli empi!

“Yet He filled their houses with good things; But the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

19 I giusti, vedendo la loro rovina, ne gioiscono, e l’innocente si fa beffe di loro:

“The righteous see and are glad, And the innocent mock them,

20 “ Vedete se non sono distrutti gli avversari nostri! La loro abbondanza l’ha divorata il fuoco!”

Saying, ‘Truly our adversaries are cut off, And their abundance the fire has consumed.’

21 « Riconcìliati dunque con Dio; avrai pace, ti sarà resa la prosperità.

“ Yield now and be at peace with Him; Thereby good will come to you.

22 R icevi istruzioni dalla sua bocca, riponi le sue parole nel tuo cuore.

“Please receive instruction from His mouth And establish His words in your heart.

23 S e torni all’Onnipotente, se allontani l’iniquità dalle tue tende, sarai ristabilito.

“If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored; If you remove unrighteousness far from your tent,

24 G etta l’oro nella polvere, l’oro di Ofir tra i ciottoli del fiume,

And place your gold in the dust, And the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks,

25 e l’Onnipotente sarà il tuo oro, egli ti sarà come l’argento acquistato con fatica.

Then the Almighty will be your gold And choice silver to you.

26 A llora l’Onnipotente sarà la tua delizia, e alzerai la faccia verso Dio.

“For then you will delight in the Almighty And lift up your face to God.

27 L o pregherai, egli ti esaudirà, e tu scioglierai i voti che avrai fatti.

“You will pray to Him, and He will hear you; And you will pay your vows.

28 Q uello che intraprenderai, ti riuscirà; sul tuo cammino risplenderà la luce.

“You will also decree a thing, and it will be established for you; And light will shine on your ways.

29 S e viene l’umiliazione, tu pregherai per essere rialzato: Dio soccorre chi ha gli occhi a terra;

“When you are cast down, you will speak with confidence, And the humble person He will save.

30 l ibererà anche chi non è innocente, egli sarà salvo per la purezza delle tue mani».

“He will deliver one who is not innocent, And he will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands.”
