1 I l Signore, Dio, mi fece vedere questo: c’era un paniere di frutti maturi.

Thus the Lord God showed me, and behold, there was a basket of summer fruit.

2 E gli mi disse: «Amos, che cosa vedi?» Io risposi: «Un paniere di frutti maturi». E il Signore mi disse: «Anche la fine del mio popolo Israele è matura; io non lo risparmierò più.

3 Q uel giorno i canti del palazzo diventeranno urli; grande sarà il numero dei cadaveri; saranno gettati dappertutto, in silenzio», dice il Signore, Dio.

4 A scoltate questo, voi che vorreste divorare il povero e distruggere gli umili del paese;

Hear this, you who trample the needy, to do away with the humble of the land,

5 v oi che dite: «Quando finirà il novilunio, perché possiamo vendere il grano? Quando finirà il sabato, perché possiamo aprire i granai, diminuire l’efa, aumentare il siclo e usare bilance false per frodare,

saying, “When will the new moon be over, So that we may sell grain, And the sabbath, that we may open the wheat market, To make the bushel smaller and the shekel bigger, And to cheat with dishonest scales,

6 p er comprare con denaro i poveri, e l’indigente se deve un paio di sandali? E venderemo perfino lo scarto del grano!»

7 I l Signore lo ha giurato per colui che è la gloria di Giacobbe: «Non dimenticherò mai nessuna delle vostre opere.

8 I l paese non tremerà forse per questo motivo? Ogni suo abitante non sarà forse in lutto? Il paese si solleverà tutto quanto come il fiume, ondeggerà e si abbasserà come il fiume d’Egitto.

“Because of this will not the land quake And everyone who dwells in it mourn? Indeed, all of it will rise up like the Nile, And it will be tossed about And subside like the Nile of Egypt.

9 Q uel giorno», dice il Signore, Dio, «io farò tramontare il sole a mezzogiorno e farò oscurare la terra in pieno giorno.

“It will come about in that day,” declares the Lord God, “That I will make the sun go down at noon And make the earth dark in broad daylight.

10 T rasformerò le vostre feste in lutto e tutti i vostri canti in lamento; coprirò di sacchi tutti i fianchi e ogni testa sarà rasa. Il paese piomberà nel lutto come quando muore un figlio unico; la sua fine sarà come un giorno d’amarezza.

“Then I will turn your festivals into mourning And all your songs into lamentation; And I will bring sackcloth on everyone’s loins And baldness on every head. And I will make it like a time of mourning for an only son, And the end of it will be like a bitter day.

11 « Ecco, vengono i giorni», dice il Signore, Dio, «in cui io manderò la fame nel paese, non fame di pane o sete d’acqua, ma la fame e la sete di ascoltare la parola del Signore.

“Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord God, “When I will send a famine on the land, Not a famine for bread or a thirst for water, But rather for hearing the words of the Lord.

12 A llora, vagando da un mare all’altro, dal settentrione al levante, correranno qua e là in cerca della parola del Signore, ma non la troveranno.

“People will stagger from sea to sea And from the north even to the east; They will go to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, But they will not find it.

13 Q uel giorno le belle ragazze e i giovani verranno meno per la sete.

“In that day the beautiful virgins And the young men will faint from thirst.

14 C adranno e non si rialzeranno più quelli che giurano per il peccato di Samaria e dicono: “Com’è vero che il tuo Dio vive, o Dan”, e: “Viva la via di Beer-Sceba!”».

“ As for those who swear by the guilt of Samaria, Who say, ‘As your god lives, O Dan,’ And, ‘As the way of Beersheba lives,’ They will fall and not rise again.”
