1 M ancavano due giorni alla Pasqua e alla festa degli Azzimi. I capi dei sacerdoti e gli scribi cercavano il modo di prendere Gesù con inganno e ucciderlo;

Now the Passover and Unleavened Bread were two days away; and the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to seize Him by stealth and kill Him;

2 i nfatti dicevano: «Non durante la festa, perché non vi sia qualche tumulto di popolo». Maria di Betania unge il capo a Gesù

for they were saying, “Not during the festival, otherwise there might be a riot of the people.”

3 G esù era a Betania, in casa di Simone il lebbroso; mentre egli era a tavola entrò una donna che aveva un vaso di alabastro pieno d’olio profumato, di nardo puro, di gran valore; rotto l’alabastro, gli versò l’olio sul capo.

While He was in Bethany at the home of Simon the leper, and reclining at the table, there came a woman with an alabaster vial of very costly perfume of pure nard; and she broke the vial and poured it over His head.

4 A lcuni si indignarono fra di loro: «Perché si è fatto questo spreco d’olio?

But some were indignantly remarking to one another, “Why has this perfume been wasted?

5 S i poteva vendere quest’olio per più di trecento denari e darli ai poveri». Ed erano irritati contro di lei.

For this perfume might have been sold for over three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor.” And they were scolding her.

6 M a Gesù disse: «Lasciatela stare! Perché le date noia? Ha fatto un’azione buona verso di me.

But Jesus said, “Let her alone; why do you bother her? She has done a good deed to Me.

7 P oiché i poveri li avete sempre con voi; quando volete, potete far loro del bene; ma me non mi avete per sempre.

For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them; but you do not always have Me.

8 L ei ha fatto ciò che poteva; ha anticipato l’unzione del mio corpo per la sepoltura.

She has done what she could; she has anointed My body beforehand for the burial.

9 I n verità vi dico che in tutto il mondo, dovunque sarà predicato il vangelo, anche quello che costei ha fatto sarà raccontato, in memoria di lei». Giuda decide di tradire Gesù

Truly I say to you, wherever the gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her.”

10 G iuda Iscariota, uno dei dodici, andò dai capi dei sacerdoti con lo scopo di consegnare loro Gesù.

Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went off to the chief priests in order to betray Him to them.

11 E ssi, dopo averlo ascoltato, si rallegrarono e promisero di dargli del denaro. Perciò egli cercava il modo opportuno per consegnarlo. L’ultima Pasqua

They were glad when they heard this, and promised to give him money. And he began seeking how to betray Him at an opportune time. The Last Passover

12 I l primo giorno degli Azzimi, quando si sacrificava la Pasqua, i suoi discepoli gli dissero: «Dove vuoi che andiamo a preparare perché tu possa mangiare la Pasqua?»

On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was being sacrificed, His disciples said to Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare for You to eat the Passover?”

13 E gli mandò due dei suoi discepoli e disse loro: «Andate in città, e vi verrà incontro un uomo che porta una brocca d’acqua; seguitelo;

And He sent two of His disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him;

14 d ove entrerà, dite al padrone di casa: “Il Maestro dice: ‘Dov’è la mia stanza in cui mangerò la Pasqua con i miei discepoli?’”.

and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is My guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’

15 E gli vi mostrerà di sopra una grande sala ammobiliata e pronta; lì apparecchiate per noi».

And he himself will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; prepare for us there.”

16 I discepoli andarono, giunsero nella città e trovarono come egli aveva detto loro; e prepararono per la Pasqua.

The disciples went out and came to the city, and found it just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.

17 Q uando fu sera, giunse Gesù con i dodici.

When it was evening He came with the twelve.

18 M entre erano a tavola e mangiavano, Gesù disse: «In verità io vi dico che uno di voi, che mangia con me, mi tradirà».

As they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me— one who is eating with Me.”

19 E ssi cominciarono a rattristarsi e a dirgli uno dopo l’altro: «Sono forse io?»

They began to be grieved and to say to Him one by one, “Surely not I?”

20 E gli disse loro: «È uno dei dodici, che intinge con me nel piatto.

And He said to them, “ It is one of the twelve, one who dips with Me in the bowl.

21 C erto il Figlio dell’uomo se ne va, com’è scritto di lui, ma guai a quell’uomo dal quale il Figlio dell’uomo è tradito! Meglio sarebbe per quell’uomo se non fosse mai nato!» La cena del Signore

For the Son of Man is to go just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.” The Lord’s Supper

22 M entre mangiavano, prese del pane e, dopo aver pronunciato la benedizione, lo spezzò, lo diede loro e disse: «Prendete, questo è il mio corpo».

While they were eating, He took some bread, and after a blessing He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is My body.”

23 P oi prese un calice e, dopo aver reso grazie, lo diede loro, e tutti ne bevvero.

And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it.

24 E d egli disse loro: «Questo è il mio sangue, il sangue del patto, che è sparso per molti.

And He said to them, “This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.

25 I n verità vi dico che non berrò più del frutto della vigna fino al giorno che lo berrò nuovo nel regno di Dio». Gesù avverte Pietro del suo rinnegamento

Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

26 D opo che ebbero cantato l’inno, uscirono per andare al monte degli Ulivi.

After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

27 G esù disse loro: «Voi tutti sarete scandalizzati perché è scritto: “Io percuoterò il pastore e le pecore saranno disperse”.

And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, because it is written, ‘ I will strike down the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.’

28 M a dopo che sarò risuscitato vi precederò in Galilea».

But after I have been raised, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.”

29 A llora Pietro gli disse: «Quand’anche tutti fossero scandalizzati, io però non lo sarò!»

But Peter said to Him, “ Even though all may fall away, yet I will not.”

30 G esù gli disse: «In verità ti dico che tu, oggi, in questa stessa notte, prima che il gallo abbia cantato due volte, mi rinnegherai tre volte».

And Jesus said to him, “Truly I say to you, that this very night, before a rooster crows twice, you yourself will deny Me three times.”

31 M a egli diceva più fermamente ancora: «Anche se dovessi morire con te, non ti rinnegherò». Lo stesso dicevano pure tutti gli altri. Agonia di Gesù nel giardino del Getsemani

But Peter kept saying insistently, “ Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” And they all were saying the same thing also. Jesus in Gethsemane

32 P oi giunsero in un podere detto Getsemani, ed egli disse ai suoi discepoli: «Sedete qui finché io abbia pregato».

They came to a place named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, “Sit here until I have prayed.”

33 G esù prese con sé Pietro, Giacomo e Giovanni e cominciò a essere spaventato e angosciato.

And He took with Him Peter and James and John, and began to be very distressed and troubled.

34 E disse loro: «L’anima mia è oppressa da tristezza mortale; rimanete qui e vegliate».

And He said to them, “ My soul is deeply grieved to the point of death; remain here and keep watch.”

35 A ndato un po’ più avanti, si gettò a terra; e pregava che, se fosse possibile, quell’ora passasse oltre da lui.

And He went a little beyond them, and fell to the ground and began to pray that if it were possible, the hour might pass Him by.

36 D iceva: «Abbà, Padre! Ogni cosa ti è possibile; allontana da me questo calice! Però non quello che io voglio, ma quello che tu vuoi».

And He was saying, “ Abba! Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will.”

37 P oi venne, li trovò che dormivano e disse a Pietro: «Simone! Dormi? Non sei stato capace di vegliare un’ora sola?

And He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour?

38 V egliate e pregate, affinché non cadiate in tentazione; lo spirito è pronto, ma la carne è debole».

Keep watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

39 D i nuovo andò e pregò, dicendo le medesime parole.

Again He went away and prayed, saying the same words.

40 R itornato, li trovò che dormivano perché gli occhi loro erano appesantiti; e non sapevano che rispondergli.

And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him.

41 V enne la terza volta e disse loro: «Dormite pure, ormai, e riposatevi! Basta! L’ora è venuta: ecco, il Figlio dell’uomo è consegnato nelle mani dei peccatori.

And He came the third time, and said to them, “ Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough; the hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.

42 A lzatevi, andiamo; ecco, colui che mi tradisce è vicino». Arresto di Gesù

Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!” Betrayal and Arrest

43 I n quell’istante, mentre Gesù parlava ancora, arrivò Giuda, uno dei dodici, e insieme a lui una folla con spade e bastoni, inviata da parte dei capi dei sacerdoti, degli scribi e degli anziani.

Immediately while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, came up accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs, who were from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.

44 C olui che lo tradiva aveva dato loro un segnale, dicendo: «Quello che bacerò, è lui; pigliatelo e portatelo via sicuramente ».

Now he who was betraying Him had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him and lead Him away under guard.”

45 A ppena giunse, subito si accostò a lui e disse: «Rabbì!» e lo baciò.

After coming, Judas immediately went to Him, saying, “ Rabbi!” and kissed Him.

46 A llora quelli gli misero le mani addosso e lo arrestarono.

They laid hands on Him and seized Him.

47 M a uno dei presenti, tratta la spada, percosse il servo del sommo sacerdote e gli recise l’orecchio.

But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear.

48 G esù, rivolto a loro, disse: «Voi siete usciti con spade e bastoni, come contro un brigante, per prendermi.

And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me, as you would against a robber?

49 O gni giorno ero in mezzo a voi insegnando nel tempio e voi non mi avete preso; ma questo è avvenuto affinché le Scritture fossero adempiute».

Every day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me; but this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures.”

50 A llora tutti, lasciatolo, se ne fuggirono.

And they all left Him and fled.

51 U n giovane lo seguiva, coperto soltanto con un lenzuolo; e lo afferrarono;

A young man was following Him, wearing nothing but a linen sheet over his naked body; and they seized him.

52 m a egli, lasciando andare il lenzuolo, se ne fuggì nudo. Gesù compare davanti a Caiafa e al sinedrio

But he pulled free of the linen sheet and escaped naked. Jesus before His Accusers

53 C ondussero Gesù davanti al sommo sacerdote; e si riunirono tutti i capi dei sacerdoti, gli anziani e gli scribi.

They led Jesus away to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes gathered together.

54 P ietro, che lo aveva seguito da lontano fin dentro il cortile del sommo sacerdote, stava lì seduto con le guardie e si scaldava al fuoco.

Peter had followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the officers and warming himself at the fire.

55 I capi dei sacerdoti e tutto il sinedrio cercavano qualche testimonianza contro Gesù per farlo morire; ma non ne trovavano.

Now the chief priests and the whole Council kept trying to obtain testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, and they were not finding any.

56 M olti deponevano il falso contro di lui, ma le testimonianze non erano concordi.

For many were giving false testimony against Him, but their testimony was not consistent.

57 E alcuni si alzarono e testimoniarono falsamente contro di lui dicendo:

Some stood up and began to give false testimony against Him, saying,

58 « Noi l’abbiamo udito mentre diceva: “Io distruggerò questo tempio fatto da mani d’uomo e in tre giorni ne ricostruirò un altro, non fatto da mani d’uomo”».

“We heard Him say, ‘ I will destroy this temple made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.’”

59 M a neppure così la loro testimonianza era concorde.

Not even in this respect was their testimony consistent.

60 A llora il sommo sacerdote, alzatosi in piedi nel mezzo, domandò a Gesù: «Non rispondi nulla? Che cosa testimoniano costoro contro di te?»

The high priest stood up and came forward and questioned Jesus, saying, “Do You not answer? What is it that these men are testifying against You?”

61 M a egli tacque e non rispose nulla. Di nuovo il sommo sacerdote lo interrogò e gli disse: «Sei tu il Cristo, il Figlio del Benedetto?»

But He kept silent and did not answer. Again the high priest was questioning Him, and saying to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One ?”

62 G esù disse: «Io sono; e vedrete il Figlio dell’uomo seduto alla destra della Potenza e venire sulle nuvole del cielo ».

And Jesus said, “I am; and you shall see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”

63 I l sommo sacerdote si stracciò le vesti e disse: «Che bisogno abbiamo ancora di testimoni?

Tearing his clothes, the high priest said, “What further need do we have of witnesses?

64 V oi avete udito la bestemmia. Che ve ne pare?» Tutti lo condannarono come reo di morte.

You have heard the blasphemy; how does it seem to you?” And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death.

65 A lcuni cominciarono a sputargli addosso, a coprirgli la faccia, a dargli dei pugni e a dirgli: «Indovina! » E le guardie si misero a schiaffeggiarlo. Gesù rinnegato tre volte da Pietro

Some began to spit at Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists, and to say to Him, “ Prophesy!” And the officers received Him with slaps in the face. Peter’s Denials

66 M entre Pietro era giù nel cortile, venne una delle serve del sommo sacerdote;

As Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant-girls of the high priest came,

67 e , veduto Pietro che si scaldava, lo guardò bene e disse: «Anche tu eri con Gesù Nazareno».

and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Nazarene.”

68 M a egli negò dicendo: «Non so, né capisco quello che tu dici». Poi andò fuori nell’atrio {e il gallo cantò}.

But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are talking about.” And he went out onto the porch.

69 L a serva, vedutolo, cominciò di nuovo a dire ai presenti: «Costui è uno di quelli».

The servant-girl saw him, and began once more to say to the bystanders, “This is one of them!”

70 M a lui negò di nuovo. E ancora, poco dopo, coloro che erano lì dicevano a Pietro: «Certamente tu sei uno di quelli, anche perché sei Galileo ».

But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders were again saying to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean too.”

71 M a egli prese a imprecare e a giurare: «Non conosco quest’uomo di cui parlate».

But he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this man you are talking about!”

72 E subito, per la seconda volta, il gallo cantò. Allora Pietro si ricordò della parola che Gesù gli aveva detta: «Prima che il gallo abbia cantato due volte, tu mi rinnegherai tre volte». E si abbandonò al pianto.

Immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had made the remark to him, “Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And he began to weep.
