1 A llora Eliseo disse: «Ascoltate la parola del Signore! Così dice il Signore: “Domani, a quest’ora, alla porta di Samaria, la misura di fior di farina si avrà per un siclo, e le due misure d’orzo si avranno per un siclo”».

Then Elisha said, “Listen to the word of the Lord; thus says the Lord, ‘ Tomorrow about this time a measure of fine flour will be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria.’”

2 M a il capitano, sul cui braccio il re si appoggiava, rispose all’uomo di Dio: «Ecco, anche se il Signore facesse delle finestre in cielo, potrebbe mai avvenire una cosa simile?» Eliseo rispose: «Ebbene, lo vedrai con i tuoi occhi, ma non ne mangerai».

The royal officer on whose hand the king was leaning answered the man of God and said, “Behold, if the Lord should make windows in heaven, could this thing be?” Then he said, “Behold, you will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat of it.” Four Lepers Relate Arameans’ Flight

3 C ’erano quattro lebbrosi presso l’entrata della porta della città, i quali dissero tra di loro: «Perché ce ne stiamo qui in attesa di morire?

Now there were four leprous men at the entrance of the gate; and they said to one another, “Why do we sit here until we die?

4 S e diciamo: “Entriamo in città”, in città c’è la fame, e noi vi morremo; se restiamo qui, morremo lo stesso. Dunque venite, andiamo a buttarci nell’accampamento dei Siri; se ci lasciano vivere, vivremo; se ci danno la morte, morremo».

If we say, ‘We will enter the city,’ then the famine is in the city and we will die there; and if we sit here, we die also. Now therefore come, and let us go over to the camp of the Arameans. If they spare us, we will live; and if they kill us, we will but die.”

5 S ull’imbrunire si alzarono per andare all’accampamento dei Siri; e, come giunsero all’estremità dell’accampamento dei Siri, ecco che non c’era nessuno.

They arose at twilight to go to the camp of the Arameans; when they came to the outskirts of the camp of the Arameans, behold, there was no one there.

6 I l Signore aveva fatto udire nell’accampamento dei Siri un rumore di carri, un rumore di cavalli, un rumore di grande esercito, tanto che i Siri avevano detto fra di loro: «Il re d’Israele ha assoldato contro di noi i re degli Ittiti e i re degli Egiziani, perché vengano ad assalirci».

For the Lord had caused the army of the Arameans to hear a sound of chariots and a sound of horses, even the sound of a great army, so that they said to one another, “Behold, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us.”

7 E si erano alzati ed erano fuggiti all’imbrunire, abbandonando le loro tende, i loro cavalli, i loro asini e l’accampamento così com’era; erano fuggiti per salvarsi la vita.

Therefore they arose and fled in the twilight, and left their tents and their horses and their donkeys, even the camp just as it was, and fled for their life.

8 Q uei lebbrosi, giunti all’estremità dell’accampamento, entrarono in una tenda, mangiarono, bevvero e portarono via argento, oro, vestiario, e andarono a nascondere ogni cosa. Poi tornarono, entrarono in un’altra tenda, e anche di là portarono via roba, che andarono a nascondere.

When these lepers came to the outskirts of the camp, they entered one tent and ate and drank, and carried from there silver and gold and clothes, and went and hid them; and they returned and entered another tent and carried from there also, and went and hid them.

9 M a poi dissero fra di loro: «Noi non facciamo bene; questo è giorno di buone notizie, e noi tacciamo! Se aspettiamo finché si faccia giorno, saremo considerati colpevoli. Ora venite, andiamo a informare la casa del re».

Then they said to one another, “We are not doing right. This day is a day of good news, but we are keeping silent; if we wait until morning light, punishment will overtake us. Now therefore come, let us go and tell the king’s household.”

10 C osì partirono, chiamarono i guardiani della città e li informarono della cosa, dicendo: «Siamo andati all’accampamento dei Siri, ed ecco, là non c’è nessuno, né si ode voce d’uomo; non vi sono che i cavalli legati e gli asini legati, e le tende intatte».

So they came and called to the gatekeepers of the city, and they told them, saying, “We came to the camp of the Arameans, and behold, there was no one there, nor the voice of man, only the horses tied and the donkeys tied, and the tents just as they were.”

11 A llora i guardiani chiamarono, e fecero sapere la cosa dentro il palazzo reale.

The gatekeepers called and told it within the king’s household.

12 I l re si alzò di notte e disse ai suoi servitori: «Vi voglio dire io quel che ci hanno fatto i Siri. Sanno che patiamo la fame; sono quindi usciti dall’accampamento a nascondersi per la campagna, dicendo: “Appena usciranno dalla città, li prenderemo vivi ed entreremo nella città”».

Then the king arose in the night and said to his servants, “I will now tell you what the Arameans have done to us. They know that we are hungry; therefore they have gone from the camp to hide themselves in the field, saying, ‘When they come out of the city, we will capture them alive and get into the city.’”

13 U no dei suoi servitori gli rispose: «Ti prego, si prendano cinque dei cavalli che rimangono ancora nella città. Guardate, sono come tutta la moltitudine d’Israele che c’è rimasta; sono come tutta la moltitudine d’Israele che muore di fame; e mandiamo a vedere di che si tratta».

One of his servants said, “Please, let some men take five of the horses which remain, which are left in the city. Behold, they will be in any case like all the multitude of Israel who are left in it; behold, they will be in any case like all the multitude of Israel who have already perished, so let us send and see.”

14 P resero dunque due carri con i loro cavalli, e il re mandò degli uomini sulle tracce dell’esercito dei Siri, dicendo: «Andate e vedete».

They took therefore two chariots with horses, and the king sent after the army of the Arameans, saying, “Go and see.” The Promise Fulfilled

15 Q uelli andarono sulle tracce dei Siri, fino al Giordano; tutta la strada era piena di vestiario e di oggetti, che i Siri avevano gettato via nella loro fuga precipitosa. E gli inviati tornarono e riferirono tutto al re.

They went after them to the Jordan, and behold, all the way was full of clothes and equipment which the Arameans had thrown away in their haste. Then the messengers returned and told the king.

16 A llora il popolo uscì e saccheggiò l’accampamento dei Siri; e una misura di fior di farina si ebbe per un siclo, e due misure d’orzo per un siclo, secondo la parola del Signore.

So the people went out and plundered the camp of the Arameans. Then a measure of fine flour was sold for a shekel and two measures of barley for a shekel, according to the word of the Lord.

17 I l re aveva affidato la guardia della porta al capitano sul cui braccio si appoggiava; ma questo capitano fu calpestato dalla folla presso la porta della città, e morì, come aveva detto l’uomo di Dio, quando aveva parlato al re che era sceso a trovarlo.

Now the king appointed the royal officer on whose hand he leaned to have charge of the gate; but the people trampled on him at the gate, and he died just as the man of God had said, who spoke when the king came down to him.

18 D ifatti, quando l’uomo di Dio aveva parlato al re, aveva detto: «Domani, a quest’ora, alla porta di Samaria, due misure d’orzo si avranno per un siclo e una misura di fior di farina per un siclo».

It happened just as the man of God had spoken to the king, saying, “ Two measures of barley for a shekel and a measure of fine flour for a shekel, will be sold tomorrow about this time at the gate of Samaria.”

19 M a quel capitano aveva risposto all’uomo di Dio e gli aveva detto: «Ecco, anche se il Signore facesse delle finestre in cielo, potrebbe mai avvenire una cosa simile?» Ed Eliseo gli aveva detto: «Ebbene, lo vedrai con i tuoi occhi, ma non ne mangerai».

Then the royal officer answered the man of God and said, “Now behold, if the Lord should make windows in heaven, could such a thing be?” And he said, “Behold, you will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat of it.”

20 E così avvenne: fu calpestato dalla folla presso la porta della città, e morì.

And so it happened to him, for the people trampled on him at the gate and he died.
