1 Y Roboam fue a Siquem porque en Siquem se había juntado todo Israel para hacerle rey.

And Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone to Shechem to make him king.

2 Y cuando lo oyó Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, el cual estaba en Egipto, donde había huido a causa del rey Salomón, volvió de Egipto.

So it happened, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard it (he was in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of King Solomon), that Jeroboam returned from Egypt.

3 Y enviaron y le llamaron. Vino, pues, Jeroboam, y todo Israel, y hablaron a Roboam, diciendo:

Then they sent for him and called him. And Jeroboam and all Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,

4 T u padre agravó nuestro yugo; afloja tú, pues, ahora algo de la dura servidumbre, y del grave yugo con que tu padre nos apremió, y te serviremos.

“Your father made our yoke heavy; now therefore, lighten the burdensome service of your father and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you.”

5 Y él les dijo: Volved a mí de aquí a tres días. Y el pueblo se fue.

So he said to them, “Come back to me after three days.” And the people departed.

6 E ntonces el rey Roboam tomó consejo con los viejos, que habían estado delante de Salomón su padre cuando vivía, y les dijo: ¿Cómo aconsejáis vosotros que responda a este pueblo?

Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who stood before his father Solomon while he still lived, saying, “How do you advise me to answer these people?”

7 Y ellos le hablaron, diciendo: Si buscares el bien a este pueblo, y los agradares, y les hablares buenas palabras, ellos te servirán perpetuamente.

And they spoke to him, saying, “If you are kind to these people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be your servants forever.”

8 M as él, dejando el consejo que le dieron los viejos, tomó consejo con los jóvenes que se habían criado con él, y que delante de él asistían;

But he rejected the advice which the elders had given him, and consulted the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him.

9 y les dijo: ¿Qué aconsejáis vosotros que respondamos a este pueblo, que me ha hablado, diciendo: Alivia algo del yugo que tu padre puso sobre nosotros?

And he said to them, “What advice do you give? How should we answer this people who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Lighten the yoke which your father put on us’?”

10 E ntonces los jóvenes que se habían criado con él, le hablaron, diciendo: Así dirás al pueblo que te ha hablado diciendo, tu padre agravó nuestro yugo, mas tú descárganos. Así les dirás: El dedo más menudo mío es más grueso que los lomos de mi padre.

Then the young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, “Thus you should speak to the people who have spoken to you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you make it lighter on us’—thus you shall say to them: ‘My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s waist!

11 A sí que, mi padre os cargó de grave yugo, y yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con azotes, y yo con escorpiones.

And now, whereas my father put a heavy yoke on you, I will add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scourges!’”

12 V ino, pues, Jeroboam con todo el pueblo a Roboam al tercer día; según el rey les había mandado diciendo: Volved a mí de aquí a tres días.

So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king had directed, saying, “Come back to me the third day.”

13 Y les respondió el rey ásperamente; pues dejó el rey Roboam el consejo de los viejos,

Then the king answered them roughly. King Rehoboam rejected the advice of the elders,

14 y les habló conforme al consejo de los jóvenes, diciendo: Mi padre agravó vuestro yugo, y yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con azotes, y yo con escorpiones.

and he spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scourges!”

15 Y no escuchó el rey al pueblo; porque la causa era de Dios, para cumplir el SEÑOR su palabra que había hablado, por Ahías, el Silonita, a Jeroboam hijo de Nabat.

So the king did not listen to the people; for the turn of events was from God, that the Lord might fulfill His word, which He had spoken by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

16 Y viendo todo Israel que el rey no les había oído, respondió el pueblo al rey, diciendo: ¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David, ni herencia en el hijo de Jessé? ¡Israel, cada uno a sus estancias! ¡David, mira ahora por tu casa! Así se fue todo Israel a sus estancias.

Now when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, saying: “What share have we in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Every man to your tents, O Israel! Now see to your own house, O David!” So all Israel departed to their tents.

17 M as reinó Roboam sobre los hijos de Israel que habitaban en las ciudades de Judá.

But Rehoboam reigned over the children of Israel who dwelt in the cities of Judah.

18 E nvió luego el rey Roboam a Adoram, que tenía a su cargo los tributos; pero le apedrearon los hijos de Israel, y murió. Entonces se esforzó el rey Roboam, y subiendo en un carro huyó a Jerusalén.

Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was in charge of revenue; but the children of Israel stoned him with stones, and he died. Therefore King Rehoboam mounted his chariot in haste to flee to Jerusalem.

19 A sí se rebeló Israel de la casa de David hasta hoy.

So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.
