1 Y fue Roboam a Siquem; porque todo Israel había venido a Siquem para hacerlo rey.

And Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone to Shechem to make him king.

2 Y aconteció, que cuando lo oyó Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, que aún estaba en Egipto, (porque había huido de delante del rey Salomón, y habitaba en Egipto;)

So it happened, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard it (he was still in Egypt, for he had fled from the presence of King Solomon and had been dwelling in Egypt ),

3 e nviaron y le llamaron. Vino pues Jeroboam y toda la congregación de Israel, y hablaron a Roboam, diciendo:

that they sent and called him. Then Jeroboam and the whole assembly of Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,

4 T u padre agravó nuestro yugo, mas ahora tú disminuye algo de la dura servidumbre de tu padre, y del yugo pesado que puso sobre nosotros, y te serviremos.

“Your father made our yoke heavy; now therefore, lighten the burdensome service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you.”

5 Y él les dijo: Idos, y de aquí a tres días volved a mí. Y el pueblo se fue.

So he said to them, “Depart for three days, then come back to me.” And the people departed.

6 E ntonces el rey Roboam tomó consejo con los ancianos que habían estado delante de Salomón su padre cuando vivía, y dijo: ¿Cómo aconsejáis vosotros que responda a este pueblo?

Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who stood before his father Solomon while he still lived, and he said, “How do you advise me to answer these people?”

7 Y ellos le hablaron, diciendo: Si tú fueres hoy siervo de este pueblo, y lo sirvieres, y respondiéndole buenas palabras les hablares, ellos te servirán para siempre.

And they spoke to him, saying, “If you will be a servant to these people today, and serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.”

8 M as él, desecho el consejo de los viejos que ellos le habían dado, tomó consejo con los jóvenes que se habían criado con él, y estaban delante de él.

But he rejected the advice which the elders had given him, and consulted the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him.

9 Y les dijo: ¿Cómo aconsejáis vosotros que respondamos a este pueblo, que me ha hablado, diciendo: Disminuye algo del yugo que tu padre puso sobre nosotros?

And he said to them, “What advice do you give? How should we answer this people who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Lighten the yoke which your father put on us’?”

10 E ntonces los jóvenes que se habían criado con él, le respondieron, diciendo: Así hablarás a este pueblo que te ha dicho estas palabras: Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo; mas tú disminúyenos algo; así les hablarás: El menor dedo de los míos es más grueso que los lomos de mi padre.

Then the young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, “Thus you should speak to this people who have spoken to you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you make it lighter on us’—thus you shall say to them: ‘My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s waist!

11 A hora pues, mi padre os cargó de pesado yugo, mas yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con azotes, mas yo os heriré con escorpiones.

And now, whereas my father put a heavy yoke on you, I will add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scourges!’”

12 Y al tercer día vino Jeroboam con todo el pueblo a Roboam; según el rey lo había mandado, diciendo: Volved a mí al tercer día.

So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had directed, saying, “Come back to me the third day.”

13 Y el rey respondió al pueblo duramente, desechando el consejo de los ancianos que ellos le habían dado;

Then the king answered the people roughly, and rejected the advice which the elders had given him;

14 y les habló conforme al consejo de los jóvenes, diciendo: Mi padre agravó vuestro yugo, pero yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con azotes, mas yo os castigaré con escorpiones.

and he spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scourges!”

15 Y no oyó el rey al pueblo; porque era ordenación del SEÑOR, para confirmar su palabra, que el SEÑOR había hablado por medio de Ahías, el silonita a Jeroboam hijo de Nabat.

So the king did not listen to the people; for the turn of events was from the Lord, that He might fulfill His word, which the Lord had spoken by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

16 Y cuando todo el pueblo vio que el rey no les había oído, le respondió estas palabras, diciendo: ¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David? No hay heredad en el hijo de Jessé. ¡Israel, a tus estancias! ¡Provee ahora en tu casa, David! Entonces Israel se fue a sus estancias.

Now when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, saying: “What share have we in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, O Israel! Now, see to your own house, O David!” So Israel departed to their tents.

17 M as reinó Roboam sobre los hijos de Israel que moraban en las ciudades de Judá.

But Rehoboam reigned over the children of Israel who dwelt in the cities of Judah.

18 Y el rey Roboam envió a Adoram, que estaba sobre los tributos; pero le apedreó todo Israel, y murió. Entonces el rey Roboam se esforzó a subir en un carro, y huir a Jerusalén.

Then King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was in charge of the revenue; but all Israel stoned him with stones, and he died. Therefore King Rehoboam mounted his chariot in haste to flee to Jerusalem.

19 A sí se rebeló Israel de la casa de David hasta hoy.

So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.

20 Y aconteció, que oyendo todo Israel que Jeroboam había vuelto, enviaron y le llamaron a la congregación, y le hicieron rey sobre todo Israel, sin quedar tribu alguna que siguiera la casa de David, sino sólo la tribu de Judá.

Now it came to pass when all Israel heard that Jeroboam had come back, they sent for him and called him to the congregation, and made him king over all Israel. There was none who followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.

21 ¶ Y cuando Roboam vino a Jerusalén, juntó toda la casa de Judá y la tribu de Benjamín, ciento ochenta mil hombres escogidos de guerra, para hacer guerra a la casa de Israel, y reducir el reino a Roboam hijo de Salomón.

And when Rehoboam came to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah with the tribe of Benjamin, one hundred and eighty thousand chosen men who were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, that he might restore the kingdom to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.

22 M as vino palabra del SEÑOR a Semaías varón de Dios, diciendo:

But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,

23 H abla a Roboam hijo de Salomón, rey de Judá, y a toda la casa de Judá y de Benjamín, y a los demás del pueblo, diciendo:

“Speak to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, saying,

24 A sí dijo el SEÑOR: No vayáis, ni peleéis contra vuestros hermanos los hijos de Israel; volveos cada uno a su casa; porque este negocio yo lo he hecho. Y ellos oyeron la palabra de Dios, y volvieron, y se fueron, conforme a la palabra del SEÑOR.

‘Thus says the Lord: “You shall not go up nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel. Let every man return to his house, for this thing is from Me.”’” Therefore they obeyed the word of the Lord, and turned back, according to the word of the Lord. Jeroboam’s Gold Calves

25 Y reedificó Jeroboam a Siquem en el monte de Efraín, y habitó en ella; y saliendo de allí, reedificó a Penuel.

Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the mountains of Ephraim, and dwelt there. Also he went out from there and built Penuel.

26 ¶ Y dijo Jeroboam en su corazón: Ahora se volverá el reino a la casa de David,

And Jeroboam said in his heart, “Now the kingdom may return to the house of David:

27 s i este pueblo subiere a sacrificar a la Casa del SEÑOR en Jerusalén; porque el corazón de este pueblo se convertirá a su señor Roboam rey de Judá, y me matarán a mí, y se tornarán a Roboam rey de Judá.

If these people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of the Lord at Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will turn back to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah, and they will kill me and go back to Rehoboam king of Judah.”

28 Y habiendo tenido consejo, hizo el rey dos becerros de oro, y dijo al pueblo: Harto habéis subido a Jerusalén; he aquí tus dioses, oh Israel, que te hicieron subir de la tierra de Egipto.

Therefore the king asked advice, made two calves of gold, and said to the people, “It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, O Israel, which brought you up from the land of Egypt!”

29 Y puso uno en Bet-el, y el otro puso en Dan.

And he set up one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan.

30 Y esto fue ocasión de pecado; porque el pueblo iba a adorar delante del uno, hasta Dan.

Now this thing became a sin, for the people went to worship before the one as far as Dan.

31 H izo también casa de lugares altos, e hizo sacerdotes de entre lo más bajo del pueblo, que no eran de los hijos de Leví.

He made shrines on the high places, and made priests from every class of people, who were not of the sons of Levi.

32 E ntonces instituyó Jeroboam solemnidad en el mes octavo, a los quince del mes, conforme a la solemnidad que se celebraba en Judá; y sacrificó sobre un altar. Así hizo en Bet-el, sacrificando a los becerros que había hecho. Ordenó también en Bet-el sacerdotes de los lugares altos que él había fabricado.

Jeroboam ordained a feast on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, like the feast that was in Judah, and offered sacrifices on the altar. So he did at Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he had made. And at Bethel he installed the priests of the high places which he had made.

33 S acrificó pues sobre el altar que él había hecho en Bet-el, a los quince del mes octavo, el mes que él había inventado de su corazón; e hizo fiesta a los hijos de Israel, y subió al altar para quemar incienso.

So he made offerings on the altar which he had made at Bethel on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, in the month which he had devised in his own heart. And he ordained a feast for the children of Israel, and offered sacrifices on the altar and burned incense.
