1 Y aconteció que cuando Samuel era ya viejo, puso a sus hijos como jueces sobre Israel.

Now it came to pass when Samuel was old that he made his sons judges over Israel.

2 E l nombre de su primogénito era Joel, y el nombre del segundo, Abías; éstos juzgaban en Beerseba.

The name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beersheba.

3 P ero sus hijos no anduvieron por los caminos de él, sino que se desviaron tras ganancias deshonestas, aceptaron sobornos y pervirtieron el derecho.

But his sons did not walk in his ways; they turned aside after dishonest gain, took bribes, and perverted justice.

4 E ntonces se reunieron todos los ancianos de Israel y fueron a Samuel en Ramá,

Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah,

5 y le dijeron: Mira, has envejecido y tus hijos no andan en tus caminos. Ahora pues, danos un rey para que nos juzgue, como todas las naciones.

and said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.”

6 P ero fue desagradable a los ojos de Samuel que dijeran: Danos un rey que nos juzgue. Y Samuel oró al Señor.

But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” So Samuel prayed to the Lord.

7 Y el Señor dijo a Samuel: Escucha la voz del pueblo en cuanto a todo lo que te digan, pues no te han desechado a ti, sino que me han desechado a mí para que no sea rey sobre ellos.

And the Lord said to Samuel, “Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them.

8 A sí como todas las obras que han hecho desde el día en que los saqué de Egipto hasta hoy, abandonándome y sirviendo a otros dioses, así lo están haciendo contigo también.

According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt, even to this day—with which they have forsaken Me and served other gods—so they are doing to you also.

9 A hora pues, oye su voz. Sin embargo, les advertirás solemnemente y les harás saber el proceder del rey que reinará sobre ellos.

Now therefore, heed their voice. However, you shall solemnly forewarn them, and show them the behavior of the king who will reign over them.”

10 E ntonces Samuel habló todas las palabras del Señor al pueblo que le había pedido rey.

So Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who asked him for a king.

11 Y dijo: Así será el proceder del rey que reinará sobre vosotros: tomará a vuestros hijos, los pondrá a su servicio en sus carros y entre su gente de a caballo, y correrán delante de sus carros.

And he said, “This will be the behavior of the king who will reign over you: He will take your sons and appoint them for his own chariots and to be his horsemen, and some will run before his chariots.

12 N ombrará para su servicio comandantes de mil y de cincuenta, y a otros para labrar sus campos y recoger sus cosechas, y hacer sus armas de guerra y pertrechos para sus carros.

He will appoint captains over his thousands and captains over his fifties, will set some to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and some to make his weapons of war and equipment for his chariots.

13 T omará también a vuestras hijas para perfumistas, cocineras y panaderas.

He will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks, and bakers.

14 T omará lo mejor de vuestros campos, de vuestros viñedos y de vuestros olivares y los dará a sus siervos.

And he will take the best of your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, and give them to his servants.

15 D e vuestro grano y de vuestras viñas tomará el diezmo, para dar lo a sus oficiales y a sus siervos.

He will take a tenth of your grain and your vintage, and give it to his officers and servants.

16 T omará también vuestros siervos y vuestras siervas, vuestros mejores jóvenes y vuestros asnos, y los usará para su servicio.

And he will take your male servants, your female servants, your finest young men, and your donkeys, and put them to his work.

17 D e vuestros rebaños tomará el diezmo, y vosotros mismos vendréis a ser sus siervos.

He will take a tenth of your sheep. And you will be his servants.

18 E se día clamaréis por causa de vuestro rey a quien escogisteis para vosotros, pero el Señor no os responderá en ese día.

And you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, and the Lord will not hear you in that day.”

19 N o obstante, el pueblo rehusó oír la voz de Samuel, y dijeron: No, sino que habrá rey sobre nosotros,

Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No, but we will have a king over us,

20 a fin de que seamos como todas las naciones, para que nuestro rey nos juzgue, salga delante de nosotros y dirija nuestras batallas.

that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.”

21 D espués que Samuel escuchó todas las palabras del pueblo, las repitió a oídos del Señor.

And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he repeated them in the hearing of the Lord.

22 Y el Señor dijo a Samuel: Oye su voz y nómbrales un rey. Entonces Samuel dijo a los hombres de Israel: Váyase cada uno a su ciudad.

So the Lord said to Samuel, “Heed their voice, and make them a king.” And Samuel said to the men of Israel, “Every man go to his city.”
