1 T hus said Yahweh, Go, and buy a potter’s earthen bottle, and take some of the elders of the people, and of the elders of the priests;

Así dijo el Señor: Ve y compra una vasija de barro del alfarero, y toma contigo a algunos de los ancianos del pueblo y de los ancianos de los sacerdotes;

2 a nd go out to the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the gate Harsith, and proclaim there the words that I shall tell you;

y sal al valle de Ben-hinom, que está a la entrada de la puerta de los tiestos, y proclama allí las palabras que yo te diré.

3 a nd say, Hear Yahweh’s word, kings of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem: Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel says, Behold, I will bring evil on this place, which whoever hears, his ears shall tingle.

Dirás: “Oíd la palabra del Señor, reyes de Judá y habitantes de Jerusalén. Así dice el Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: ‘He aquí, traeré tal calamidad sobre este lugar, que a todo el que oiga de ella le retiñirán los oídos.

4 B ecause they have forsaken me, and have estranged this place, and have burned incense in it to other gods, that they didn’t know, they and their fathers and the kings of Judah; and have filled this place with the blood of innocents,

‘Porque me han abandonado, han hecho extraño este lugar y han ofrecido sacrificios en él a otros dioses, que ni ellos, ni sus padres, ni los reyes de Judá habían conocido, y han llenado este lugar de sangre de inocentes,

5 a nd have built the high places of Baal, to burn their sons in the fire for burnt offerings to Baal; which I didn’t command, nor spoke it, neither came it into my mind:

y han edificado los lugares altos de Baal para quemar a sus hijos en el fuego como holocaustos a Baal, cosa que nunca mandé, ni de la cual hablé, ni me pasó por la mente;

6 t herefore, behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that this place shall no more be called Topheth, nor The valley of the son of Hinnom, but The valley of Slaughter.

por tanto, he aquí, vienen días —declara el Señor — cuando este lugar no se llamará más Tofet ni valle de Ben-hinom, sino Valle de la Matanza.

7 I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place; and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hand of those who seek their life: and their dead bodies will I give to be food for the birds of the sky, and for the animals of the earth.

‘Y haré nulo el consejo de Judá y de Jerusalén en este lugar, y los haré caer a espada delante de sus enemigos y a mano de los que buscan su vida, y entregaré sus cadáveres por comida a las aves del cielo y a las bestias de la tierra.

8 I will make this city an astonishment, and a hissing; everyone who passes thereby shall be astonished and hiss because of all its plagues.

‘También convertiré esta ciudad en desolación y burla; todo aquel que pase por ella se quedará atónito y silbará a causa de toda su destrucción.

9 I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters; and they shall eat everyone the flesh of his friend, in the siege and in the distress, with which their enemies, and those who seek their life, shall distress them.

‘Y les haré comer la carne de sus hijos y la carne de sus hijas, y cada uno comerá la carne de su prójimo durante el sitio y en la aflicción con que les afligirán sus enemigos y los que buscan su vida.’”

10 T hen you shall break the bottle in the sight of the men who go with you,

Entonces romperás la vasija a la vista de los hombres que te acompañen,

11 a nd shall tell them, Yahweh of Armies says: Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaks a potter’s vessel, that can’t be made whole again; and they shall bury in Topheth, until there is no place to bury.

y les dirás: “Así dice el Señor de los ejércitos: ‘De igual manera romperé yo a este pueblo y a esta ciudad, como quien rompe una vasija de alfarero, que no se puede reparar más; y los enterrarán en Tofet por no haber otro lugar donde enterrar.

12 T hus will I do to this place, says Yahweh, and to its inhabitants, even making this city as Topheth:

‘Así haré con este lugar y con sus habitantes —declara el Señor — poniendo esta ciudad como Tofet.

13 a nd the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the kings of Judah, which are defiled, shall be as the place of Topheth, even all the houses on whose roofs they have burned incense to all the army of the sky, and have poured out drink offerings to other gods.

‘Y las casas de Jerusalén y las casas de los reyes de Judá serán como el lugar de Tofet, inmundas, a causa de todas las casas en cuyos terrados ofrecieron sacrificios a todo el ejército del cielo y derramaron libaciones a otros dioses.’”

14 T hen came Jeremiah from Topheth, where Yahweh had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in the court of Yahweh’s house, and said to all the people:

Y volvió Jeremías de Tofet, adonde lo había enviado el Señor a profetizar, y poniéndose en pie en el atrio de la casa del Señor, dijo a todo el pueblo:

15 Y ahweh of Armies, the God of Israel says, Behold, I will bring on this city and on all its towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it; because they have made their neck stiff, that they may not hear my words.

Así dice el Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: “He aquí, voy a traer sobre esta ciudad y sobre todas sus aldeas la calamidad que he declarado contra ella, porque han endurecido su cerviz para no escuchar mis palabras.”
