1 L et not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment.

Братия мои! не многие делайтесь учителями, зная, что мы подвергнемся большему осуждению,

2 F or we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well.

ибо все мы много согрешаем. Кто не согрешает в слове, тот человек совершенный, могущий обуздать и все тело.

3 N ow if we put the bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well.

Вот, мы влагаем удила в рот коням, чтобы они повиновались нам, и управляем всем телом их.

4 L ook at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires.

Вот, и корабли, как ни велики они и как ни сильными ветрами носятся, небольшим рулем направляются, куда хочет кормчий;

5 S o also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!

так и язык--небольшой член, но много делает. Посмотри, небольшой огонь как много вещества зажигает!

6 A nd the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.

И язык--огонь, прикраса неправды; язык в таком положении находится между членами нашими, что оскверняет все тело и воспаляет круг жизни, будучи сам воспаляем от геенны.

7 F or every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race.

Ибо всякое естество зверей и птиц, пресмыкающихся и морских животных укрощается и укрощено естеством человеческим,

8 B ut no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.

а язык укротить никто из людей не может: это--неудержимое зло; он исполнен смертоносного яда.

9 W ith it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God;

Им благословляем Бога и Отца, и им проклинаем человеков, сотворенных по подобию Божию.

10 f rom the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.

Из тех же уст исходит благословение и проклятие: не должно, братия мои, сему так быть.

11 D oes a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water ?

Течет ли из одного отверстия источника сладкая и горькая ?

12 C an a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh. Wisdom from Above

Не может, братия мои, смоковница приносить маслины или виноградная лоза смоквы. Также и один источник не изливать соленую и сладкую воду.

13 W ho among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom.

Мудр ли и разумен кто из вас, докажи это на самом деле добрым поведением с мудрою кротостью.

14 B ut if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth.

Но если в вашем сердце вы имеете горькую зависть и сварливость, то не хвалитесь и не лгите на истину.

15 T his wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic.

Это не есть мудрость, нисходящая свыше, но земная, душевная, бесовская,

16 F or where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing.

ибо где зависть и сварливость, там неустройство и всё худое.

17 B ut the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.

Но мудрость, сходящая свыше, во-первых, чиста, потом мирна, скромна, послушлива, полна милосердия и добрых плодов, беспристрастна и нелицемерна.

18 A nd the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

Плод же правды в мире сеется у тех, которые хранят мир.
