1 Î n vremea aceea, nu era împărat în Israel; şi seminţia Daniţilor îşi cauta o moşie ca să se aşeze în ea, căci pînă în ziua aceea nu -i căzuse la sorţi nici o moştenire în mijlocul semintiilor lui Israel.

In those days there was no king in Israel. In those days the tribe of the Danites sought an inheritance to dwell in; for to that day, their inheritance had not fallen to them among the tribes of Israel.

2 F iii lui Dan au luat dintre ei toţi, din familiile lor, cinci oameni viteji, pe cari i-au trimes din Ţorea şi din Eştaol, să iscodească ţara şi s'o cerceteze. Ei le-au zis:,, Duceţi-vă şi cercetaţi ţara.`` Ei au ajuns în muntele lui Efraim, la casa lui Mica, şi au rămas peste noapte acolo.

The children of Dan sent five men of their family from their whole number, men of valor, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to search it. They said to them, “Go, explore the land!” They came to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, and lodged there.

3 C înd erau aproape de casa lui Mica, au cunoscut glasul tînărului Levit, s'au apropiat şi i-au zis:,, Cine te -a adus aici? Ce faci tu în locul acesta? Şi ce ai aici?``

When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the Levite; so they turned aside there, and said to him, “Who brought you here? What do you do in this place? What do you have here?”

4 E l le -a răspuns:,, Mica face cutare şi cutare lucru pentru mine, îmi dă o simbrie, şi eu îi sînt preot.``

He said to them, “Thus and thus has Micah dealt with me, and he has hired me, and I am become his priest.”

5 E i i-au zis:,,Întreabă pe Dumnezeu, ca să ştim dacă vom avea noroc în călătoria noastră.``

They said to him, “Please ask counsel of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.”

6 Ş i preotul le -a răspuns:,, Duceţi-vă în pace; călătoria pe care o faceţi este subt privirea Domnului.``

The priest said to them, “Go in peace. Your way in which you go is before Yahweh.”

7 C ei cinci oameni au plecat, şi au ajuns în Lais. Au văzut poporul de acolo trăind la adăpost, în felul Sidoniţilor, liniştit şi fără grijă; în ţară nu era nimeni care să le facă cel mai mic neajuns stăpînind peste ei; erau departe de Sidoniţi, şi n'aveau nici o legătură cu alţi oameni.

Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people who were there, how they lived in safety, in the way of the Sidonians, quiet and secure; for there was no one in the land, possessing authority, that might put them to shame in anything, and they were far from the Sidonians, and had no dealings with anyone else.

8 S 'au întors la fraţii lor în Ţorea şi Eştaol, şi fraţii lor le-au zis:,, Ce veste ne aduceţi?``

They came to their brothers at Zorah and Eshtaol; and their brothers asked them, “What do you say?”

9 H aidem``, au răspuns ei,,, să ne suim împotriva lor; căci am văzut ţara, şi iată că era foarte bună. Ce! Staţi şi nu ziceţi nimic? Nu fiţi leneşi şi porniţi să puneţi stăpînire pe ţara aceasta.

They said, “Arise, and let us go up against them; for we have seen the land, and behold, it is very good. Do you stand still? Don’t be slothful to go and to enter in to possess the land.

10 C înd veţi intra în ea, veţi da peste un popor care stă fără frică. Ţara este mare, şi Dumnezeu a dat -o în mînile voastre; este un loc unde nu lipseşte nimic din tot ce este pe pămînt.``

When you go, you will come to an unsuspecting people, and the land is large; for God has given it into your hand, a place where there is no lack of anything that is in the earth.”

11 Ş ase sute de oameni din familia lui Dan au pornit din Ţorea şi Eştaol, încinşi cu armele lor de război.

The family of the Danites set out from Zorah and Eshtaol, with six hundred men armed with weapons of war.

12 S 'au suit, şi au tăbărît la Chiriat-Iearim în Iuda; de aceea locul acesta, care este înapoia lui Chiriat-Iearim, a fost chemat pînă în ziua de azi Mahane-Dan (Tabăra lui Dan).

They went up and encamped in Kiriath Jearim, in Judah. Therefore they called that place Mahaneh Dan, to this day. Behold, it is behind Kiriath Jearim.

13 A u trecut de acolo în muntele lui Efraim şi au ajuns pînă la casa lui Mica.

They passed from there to the hill country of Ephraim, and came to the house of Micah.

14 A tunci cei cinci oameni cari se duseseră să iscodească ţara Lais, au luat cuvîntul şi au zis fraţilor lor:,,Ştiţi că în casele acestea este un efod, terafimi, un chip cioplit şi un chip turnat? Vedeţi acum ce aveţi de făcut.``

Then the five men who went to spy out the country of Laish answered, and said to their brothers, “Do you know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and an engraved image, and a molten image? Now therefore consider what you have to do.”

15 E i s'au abătut pe acolo, au intrat în casa tînărului Levit, în casa lui Mica, şi l-au întrebat de sănătate!

They turned aside there, and came to the house of the young Levite man, even to the house of Micah, and asked him how he was doing.

16 C ei şase sute de oameni din fiii lui Dan, încinşi cu armele lor de război, stăteau la intrarea porţii.

The six hundred men armed with their weapons of war, who were of the children of Dan, stood by the entrance of the gate.

17 Ş i cei cinci oameni cari se duseseră să iscodească ţara, s'au suit şi au intrat în casă; au luat chipul cioplit, efodul, terafimii, şi chipul turnat, în timp ce preotul era la intrarea porţii cu cei şase sute de oameni, încinşi cu armele lor de război.

The five men who went to spy out the land went up, and came in there, and took the engraved image, the ephod, the teraphim, and the molten image; and the priest stood by the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men armed with weapons of war.

18 C înd au intrat în casa lui Mica, şi au luat chipul cioplit, efodul, terafimii, şi chipul turnat, preotul le -a zis:,, Ce faceţi?``

When these went into Micah’s house, and took the engraved image, the ephod, the teraphim, and the molten image, the priest said to them, “What are you doing?”

19 E i au răspuns:,, Taci, pune-ţi mîna la gură, şi vino cu noi; să ne fii părinte şi preot. Mai bine este să fii preot la casa unui singur om, sau să fii preotul unei seminţii şi unei familii din Israel?``

They said to him, “Hold your peace, put your hand on your mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest. Is it better for you to be priest to the house of one man, or to be priest to a tribe and a family in Israel?”

20 P reotul s'a bucurat în inima lui; a luat efodul, terafimii, şi chipul cioplit, şi s'a unit cu ceata poporului.

The priest’s heart was glad, and he took the ephod, the teraphim, and the engraved image, and went with the people.

21 A u pornit iarăş la drum şi au plecat, punînd înaintea lor copiii, vitele şi calabalîcurile.

So they turned and departed, and put the little ones, the livestock, and the goods before them.

22 D upă ce se depărtaseră bine de casa lui Mica, oamenii cari locuiau în casele vecine cu a lui Mica s'au strîns şi au urmărit pe fiii lui Dan.

When they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men who were in the houses near Micah’s house gathered together and overtook the children of Dan.

23 A u strigat după fiii lui Dan, cari s'au întors şi au zis lui Mica:,, Ce ai, şi ce înseamnă gloata aceasta de oameni?``

As they cried to the children of Dan, they turned their faces, and said to Micah, “What ails you, that you come with such a company?”

24 E l a răspuns:,, Dumnezeii mei, pe cari mi -i făcusem, mi i-aţi luat împreună cu preotul şi aţi plecat: ce-mi mai rămîne? Cum puteţi dar să-mi spuneţi:, Ce ai?``

He said, “You have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and have gone away! What more do I have? How can you ask me, ‘What ails you?’”

25 F iii lui Dan i-au zis:,, Să nu-ţi auzim glasul; căci altfel nişte oameni amărîţi se vor arunca asupra voastră, şi te vei perde şi pe tine şi pe cei din casa ta.``

The children of Dan said to him, “Don’t let your voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows fall on you, and you lose your life, with the lives of your household.”

26 Ş i fiii lui Dan şi-au văzut mai departe de drum. Mica, văzînd că sînt mai tari decît el, s'a întors şi a venit acasă.

The children of Dan went their way; and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back to his house.

27 A u ridicat dar ce făcuse Mica, şi au luat pe preotul care era în slujba lui, şi s'au năpustit asupra Laisului, asupra unui popor liniştit şi în pace; l-au trecut prin ascuţişul săbiei, şi au ars cetatea.

They took that which Micah had made, and the priest whom he had, and came to Laish, to a people quiet and unsuspecting, and struck them with the edge of the sword; then they burned the city with fire.

28 N imeni n'a izbăvit -o, căci era departe de Sidon, şi locuitorii ei n'aveau nicio legătură cu alţi oameni: ea era în valea care se întinde spre Bet-Rehob. Fiii lui Dan au zidit din nou cetatea, şi au locuit în ea;

There was no deliverer, because it was far from Sidon, and they had no dealings with anyone else; and it was in the valley that lies by Beth Rehob. They built the city, and lived in it.

29 a u numit -o Dan, după numele lui Dan, tatăl lor, care se născuse lui Israel; dar cetatea se chema mai înainte Lais.

They called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israel; however the name of the city used to be Laish.

30 A u înălţat pentru ei chipul cioplit; şi Ionatan, fiul lui Gherşom, fiul lui Moise, el şi fiii lui au fost preoţii seminţiei Daniţilor, pînă pe vremea robirii ţării.

The children of Dan set up for themselves the engraved image; and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Moses, and his sons were priests to the tribe of the Danites until the day of the captivity of the land.

31 A u aşezat pentru ei chipul cioplit pe care -l făcuse Mica, în tot timpul cît a fost casa lui Dumnezeu la Silo.

So they set up for themselves Micah’s engraved image which he made, and it remained all the time that God’s house was in Shiloh.
