1 T here happened to be there a base fellow, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite; and he blew the trumpet, and said, “We have no portion in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse. Every man to his tents, Israel!”

S-a întâmplat că se afla acolo un om nelegiuit pe nume Şeba, fiul lui Bicri, un beniamit. Acesta a sunat din corn şi a zis: „Noi n-avem nici o parte în David şi nici o moştenire în fiul lui Işai. La corturile tale, Israel!“

2 S o all the men of Israel went up from following David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri; but the men of Judah joined with their king, from the Jordan even to Jerusalem.

Toţi bărbaţii lui Israel l-au părăsit astfel pe David şi l-au urmat pe Şeba, fiul lui Bicri. Bărbaţii lui Iuda însă au rămas alipiţi de regele lor, în tot drumul său, de la Iordan până la Ierusalim.

3 D avid came to his house at Jerusalem; and the king took the ten women his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and put them in custody, and provided them with sustenance, but didn’t go in to them. So they were shut up to the day of their death, living in widowhood.

După ce a sosit acasă, la Ierusalim, David le-a luat pe cele zece ţiitoare pe care le lăsase să îngrijească de palat şi le-a aşezat într-o casă, sub supraveghere. Le-a purtat de grijă, dar nu a mai intrat la ele. Acestea au rămas închise până în ziua morţii lor, trăind asemenea unor văduve.

4 T hen the king said to Amasa, “Call me the men of Judah together within three days, and be here present.”

Regele i-a zis lui Amasa: „Cheamă-i la mine pe bărbaţii lui Iuda în trei zile şi adu-i înaintea mea! Să fii şi tu prezent aici!“

5 S o Amasa went to call the men of Judah together; but he stayed longer than the set time which he had appointed him.

Amasa a plecat să îndeplinească porunca regelui, însă el a întârziat, stând peste timpul hotărât de acesta.

6 D avid said to Abishai, “Now Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more harm than Absalom did. Take your lord’s servants, and pursue after him, lest he get himself fortified cities, and escape out of our sight.”

Atunci David i-a zis lui Abişai: „Să ştii că Şeba, fiul lui Bicri, ne va face mai mult rău decât ne-a făcut Absalom. Ia cu tine pe slujitorii stăpânului tău şi urmăreşte-l ca nu cumva să găsească cetăţi fortificate şi să scape de noi.“

7 J oab’s men went out after him, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men; and they went out of Jerusalem, to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.

Astfel oamenii lui Ioab, cheretiţii, peletiţii şi toţi războinicii viteji au ieşit din Ierusalim, sub comanda lui Abişai, pentru a-l urmări pe Şeba, fiul lui Bicri.

8 W hen they were at the great stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. Joab was clothed in his apparel of war that he had put on, and on it was a sash with a sword fastened on his waist in its sheath; and as he went along it fell out.

În timp ce se aflau ei la stânca aceea mare din Ghivon, a venit şi Amasa să-i întâlnească. Ioab era îmbrăcat într-o tunică de război şi peste aceasta, la şold, purta o cingătoare cu o sabie în teacă. În timp ce se îndrepta înspre Amasa sabia i-a ieşit din teacă.

9 J oab said to Amasa, “Is it well with you, my brother?” Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.

Ioab l-a salutat pe Amasa, spunându-i: „Ce mai faci, frate?“ Apoi l-a apucat cu mâna dreaptă de barbă ca să-l sărute.

10 B ut Amasa took no heed to the sword that was in Joab’s hand. So he struck him with it in the body, and shed out his bowels to the ground, and didn’t strike him again; and he died. Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri.

Amasa n-a dat atenţie sabiei pe care Ioab o avea în mână, iar acesta l-a lovit cu ea în stomac, vărsându-i măruntaiele pe pământ. Fără a mai fi nevoie de încă o lovitură, Amasa a murit. Apoi Ioab, împreună cu fratele său Abişai, a continuat să-l urmărească pe Şeba, fiul lui Bicri.

11 O ne of Joab’s young men stood by him, and said, “He who favors Joab, and he who is for David, let him follow Joab!”

Unul dintre slujitorii lui Ioab a rămas lângă trupul lui Amasa şi striga: „Cine este de partea lui Ioab şi cine este de partea lui David să-l urmeze pe Ioab!“

12 A masa lay wallowing in his blood in the middle of the highway. When the man saw that all the people stood still, he carried Amasa out of the highway into the field, and cast a garment over him, when he saw that everyone who came by him stood still.

Trupul lui Amasa zăcea în sânge, în mijlocul drumului. Slujitorul lui Ioab a văzut că toţi luptătorii se opreau. Când a văzut el că fiecare om se oprea în dreptul lui Amasa, a tras trupul de pe drum pe câmp şi a aruncat o haină peste el.

13 W hen he was removed out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab, to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.

După ce a fost luat din drum, toţi oamenii l-au urmat pe Ioab în urmărirea lui Şeba, fiul lui Bicri.

14 H e went through all the tribes of Israel to Abel, and to Beth Maacah, and all the Berites. They were gathered together, and went also after him.

El a străbătut toate seminţiile lui Israel, îndreptându-se înspre Abel-Bet-Maaca. Toţi beriţii s-au adunat şi l-au urmat.

15 T hey came and besieged him in Abel of Beth Maacah, and they cast up a mound against the city, and it stood against the rampart; and all the people who were with Joab battered the wall, to throw it down.

Ioab cu oamenii săi au venit şi l-au asediat pe Şeba în Abel-Bet-Maaca. Au ridicat o rampă de asalt împotriva cetăţii până la înălţimea meterezei şi au început să dărâme zidul.

16 T hen a wise woman cried out of the city, “Hear, hear! Please say to Joab, ‘Come near here, that I may speak with you.’”

Atunci o femeie înţeleaptă din cetate a strigat: – Ascultaţi! Ascultaţi! Spuneţi-i lui Ioab să se apropie ca să-i vorbesc.

17 H e came near to her; and the woman said, “Are you Joab?” He answered, “I am.” Then she said to him, “Hear the words of your servant.” He answered, “I’m listening.”

Ioab s-a apropiat, iar femeia l-a întrebat: – Tu eşti Ioab? – Da, eu sunt! i-a răspuns acesta. – Ascultă ce are de spus slujitoarea ta! i-a zis femeia. – Ascult, i-a zis Ioab.

18 T hen she spoke, saying, “They used to say in old times, ‘They shall surely ask counsel at Abel;’ and so they settled a matter.

– Odinioară, a continuat femeia, se obişnuia să se spună: „Să întrebăm la Abel!“ Şi totul se termina aici.

19 I am among those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel. You seek to destroy a city and a mother in Israel. Why will you swallow up Yahweh’s inheritance?”

Noi suntem una din cetăţile paşnice şi credincioase ale lui Israel, iar tu cauţi să distrugi o cetate care este o mamă în Israel. De ce vrei să devorezi moştenirea Domnului ?

20 J oab answered, “Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up or destroy.

Ioab i-a răspuns femeii: – Cu nici un chip nu doresc să devorez şi să distrug.

21 T he matter is not so. But a man of the hill country of Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, has lifted up his hand against the king, even against David. Just deliver him, and I will depart from the city.” The woman said to Joab, “Behold, his head will be thrown to you over the wall.”

Nu asta vreau! Dar un om din regiunea muntoasă a lui Efraim, pe nume Şeba, fiul lui Bicri, s-a răzvrătit împotriva regelui, împotriva lui David. Daţi-mi-l doar pe el şi mă voi îndepărta de cetate. – Bine, i-a zis femeia lui Ioab, capul lui îţi va fi aruncat de pe zid.

22 T hen the woman went to all the people in her wisdom. They cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and threw it out to Joab. He blew the trumpet, and they were dispersed from the city, every man to his tent. Then Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.

Femeia i-a înduplecat pe toţi cei din cetate cu sfatul ei înţelept. Aceştia i-au tăiat capul lui Şeba, fiul lui Bicri, şi i l-au aruncat lui Ioab. Atunci el a sunat din corn şi oamenii săi s-au retras de lângă cetate, plecând fiecare la cortul lui. Ioab s-a întors la rege, în Ierusalim.

23 N ow Joab was over all the army of Israel, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and over the Pelethites,

Ioab era conducătorul întregii oştiri a lui Israel; Benaia, fiul lui Iehoiada, era conducătorul cheretiţilor şi al peletiţilor;

24 A doram was over the men subject to forced labor, Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder,

Adoniram era căpetenie peste oamenii de corvoadă; Iehoşafat, fiul lui Ahilud, era cronicar;

25 S heva was scribe, and Zadok and Abiathar were priests,

Şeva era scrib, iar Ţadok şi Abiatar erau preoţi.

26 a nd Ira the Jairite was chief minister to David.

De asemenea, şi iairitul Ira era preotul lui David.
