1 T here is an evil which I have seen under the sun and it is prevalent among men—

2 a man to whom God has given riches and wealth and honor so that his soul lacks nothing of all that he desires; yet God has not empowered him to eat from them, for a foreigner enjoys them. This is vanity and a severe affliction.

De exemplu, Dumnezeu îi dă unui om bogăţie, averi şi faimă, aşa încât nu-i lipseşte nimic din ceea ce­şi doreşte, însă Dumnezeu nu-i dă dreptul să se bucure de ele, ci dă acest drept unui străin. Aceasta este o deşertăciune şi un rău tulburător!

3 I f a man fathers a hundred children and lives many years, however many they be, but his soul is not satisfied with good things and he does not even have a proper burial, then I say, “Better the miscarriage than he,

Ar putea exista un om căruia i s-ar naşte o sută de fii şi care ar trăi o viaţă lungă, un om căruia i s-ar lungi anii vieţii lui, dar al cărui suflet nu s-ar sătura de bunătăţile strânse şi care nu ar avea parte nici de loc de îngropare. Eu zic că, decât ca el, mai bine stârpitură!

4 f or it comes in futility and goes into obscurity; and its name is covered in obscurity.

Acesta se naşte în zadar şi pleacă în întuneric, iar întunericul îi acoperă numele.

5 I t never sees the sun and it never knows anything; it is better off than he.

În plus, el nu a văzut şi nu a cunoscut soarele. Totuşi este mai multă linişte pentru acesta, decât pentru celălalt,

6 E ven if the other man lives a thousand years twice and does not enjoy good things— do not all go to one place?”

chiar dacă celălalt ar trăi cu două mii de ani mai mult, căci de bunătăţi nu a avut parte. Oare nu merg toate într-un singur loc?

7 A ll a man’s labor is for his mouth and yet the appetite is not satisfied.

Deşi toată osteneala omului este pentru gura lui, totuşi sufletul nu este mulţumit.

8 F or what advantage does the wise man have over the fool? What advantage does the poor man have, knowing how to walk before the living?

Cu ce este mai câştigat înţeleptul faţă de cel prost? Ce câştigă săracul ştiind cum să se poarte înaintea celorlalţi?

9 W hat the eyes see is better than what the soul desires. This too is futility and a striving after wind.

Mai bună este priveliştea dată de ochi, decât hoinăreala după pofte! Dar şi aceasta este deşertăciune şi goană după vânt!

10 W hatever exists has already been named, and it is known what man is; for he cannot dispute with him who is stronger than he is.

Ceea ce există de mult timp a fost deja numit şi ce este omul a fost cunoscut deja; el nu se poate judeca cu cel ce este mai tare decât el.

11 F or there are many words which increase futility. What then is the advantage to a man?

Cu cât sunt mai numeroase cuvintele, cu atât este mai mare deşertăciunea! Şi ce folos are omul din aceasta?

12 F or who knows what is good for a man during his lifetime, during the few years of his futile life? He will spend them like a shadow. For who can tell a man what will be after him under the sun?

Cine ştie ce este bine cu adevărat pentru om în scurta lui viaţă, în zilele vieţii lui deşarte, pe care le petrece ca o umbră? Cine îi poate spune omului ce va fi după el sub soare?“
