1 T hen Eliphaz the Temanite responded,

Atunci Elifaz din Teman i-a zis:

2 “ Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge And fill himself with the east wind?

„Oare se cade să răspundă înţeleptul cu învăţături deşarte şi să-şi umple stomacul cu vântul de răsărit?

3 “ Should he argue with useless talk, Or with words which are not profitable?

Să se apere folosind cuvinte nefolositoare sau o vorbire fără de folos?

4 “ Indeed, you do away with reverence And hinder meditation before God.

Tu dai la o parte chiar şi frica de Dumnezeu şi împiedici cugetarea înaintea lui Dumnezeu.

5 “ For your guilt teaches your mouth, And you choose the language of the crafty.

Nedreptatea ta te învaţă ce să spui, iar limba ta e ca a unui om viclean.

6 “ Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; And your own lips testify against you.

Gura ta te condamnă, nu a mea, buzele tale mărturisesc împotriva ta.

7 “ Were you the first man to be born, Or were you brought forth before the hills?

Crezi că tu te-ai născut primul între oameni? Ai fost adus pe lume înaintea dealurilor?

8 “ Do you hear the secret counsel of God, And limit wisdom to yourself?

Ai fost tu la sfatul lui Dumnezeu? Tu eşti singurul care are înţelepciune?

9 “ What do you know that we do not know? What do you understand that we do not?

Ce ştii tu, şi noi să nu ştim? Ce cunoşti tu, şi noi să nu cunoaştem?

10 “ Both the gray-haired and the aged are among us, Older than your father.

Între noi sunt oameni cu părul cărunt, oameni mai bătrâni chiar decât tatăl tău.

11 “ Are the consolations of God too small for you, Even the word spoken gently with you?

Sunt prea neînsemnate pentru tine mângâierile lui Dumnezeu sau cuvintele care ţi-au fost spuse cu blândeţe?

12 “ Why does your heart carry you away? And why do your eyes flash,

De ce îţi îndepărtezi inima? Şi ce înseamnă strălucirea ochilor tăi,

13 T hat you should turn your spirit against God And allow such words to go out of your mouth?

de îţi întărâţi duhul împotriva lui Dumnezeu şi laşi să-ţi iasă din gură astfel de cuvinte?

14 “ What is man, that he should be pure, Or he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

Ce este omul ca el să poată fi curat sau ce este cel născut din femeie ca să poată fi drept?

15 “ Behold, He puts no trust in His holy ones, And the heavens are not pure in His sight;

Dacă Dumnezeu nu se încrede nici în sfinţii Săi, dacă nici chiar cerurile nu sunt curate în ochii Săi,

16 H ow much less one who is detestable and corrupt, Man, who drinks iniquity like water! What Eliphaz Has Seen of Life

cu atât mai puţin omul care este mârşav şi corupt, care bea nedreptatea ca pe apă.

17 “ I will tell you, listen to me; And what I have seen I will also declare;

Ascultă-mă! şi îţi voi face cunoscut, îţi voi arăta ceea ce am văzut,

18 W hat wise men have told, And have not concealed from their fathers,

ceea ce-au povestit oamenii înţelepţi, care nu au ascuns nimic din ce le-au spus părinţii lor,

19 T o whom alone the land was given, And no alien passed among them.

pentru că doar lor le-a fost dată ţara şi nici un străin n-a trecut printre ei.

20 “ The wicked man writhes in pain all his days, And numbered are the years stored up for the ruthless.

Cel rău se chinuie în durere în toate zilele sale şi are parte de cruzime în toţi anii lui.

21 “ Sounds of terror are in his ears; While at peace the destroyer comes upon him.

Zgomote înspăimântătoare îi umplu urechile; când toate par bine, tâlharii îl atacă.

22 “ He does not believe that he will return from darkness, And he is destined for the sword.

Nu speră că va scăpa de întuneric; el este însemnat pentru sabie.

23 “ He wanders about for food, saying, ‘Where is it?’ He knows that a day of darkness is at hand.

Aleargă încoace şi încolo după pâine, zicând: «Unde e?» Ştie că ziua întunericului e aproape.

24 “ Distress and anguish terrify him, They overpower him like a king ready for the attack,

Necazul şi neliniştea îl înspăimântă, se aruncă asupra lui ca un împărat gata de luptă,

25 B ecause he has stretched out his hand against God And conducts himself arrogantly against the Almighty.

căci a ridicat mâna împotriva lui Dumnezeu şi s-a mândrit înaintea Celui Atotputernic,

26 “ He rushes headlong at Him With his massive shield.

pentru că a alergat cu încăpăţânare împotriva Lui, cu un scut gros şi puternic.

27 “ For he has covered his face with his fat And made his thighs heavy with flesh.

Deşi faţa i s-a umflat de grăsime şi i s-au îngrăşat şalele,

28 “ He has lived in desolate cities, In houses no one would inhabit, Which are destined to become ruins.

el va locui în cetăţi distruse şi în case în care nu stă nimeni, în case gata să ajungă o grămadă de ruine.

29 “ He will not become rich, nor will his wealth endure; And his grain will not bend down to the ground.

Nu se va mai îmbogăţi, nu-i va mai creşte averea şi averea lui nu va mai împânzi ţara.

30 “ He will not escape from darkness; The flame will wither his shoots, And by the breath of His mouth he will go away.

Nu va scăpa de întuneric, o flacără îi va usca mlădiţele şi suflarea gurii lui Dumnezeu îl va îndepărta.

31 “ Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself; For emptiness will be his reward.

Să nu se înşele încrezându-se în deşertăciune, căci deşertăciunea îi va fi răsplata.

32 “ It will be accomplished before his time, And his palm branch will not be green.

Va fi răsplătit înainte de vreme şi mlădiţele lui nu vor înverzi.

33 “ He will drop off his unripe grape like the vine, And will cast off his flower like the olive tree.

El va fi ca o viţă ai cărei struguri au fost rupţi, ca un măslin ale cărui flori au căzut.

34 “ For the company of the godless is barren, And fire consumes the tents of the corrupt.

Căci gloata celor lipsiţi de evlavie va ajunge stearpă şi focul va arde corturile celor ce iubesc mita.

35 “ They conceive mischief and bring forth iniquity, And their mind prepares deception.”

Ei zămislesc necazul şi dau naştere la rău, pântecele lor pregăteşte înşelătoria.“
