1 ¶ Y estuvo el arca del SEÑOR en la tierra de los filisteos siete meses.

Yahweh’s ark was in the country of the Philistines seven months.

2 E ntonces los filisteos, llamando a los sacerdotes y adivinos, preguntaron: ¿Qué haremos del arca del SEÑOR? Declaradnos cómo la hemos de volver a enviar a su lugar.

The Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, “What shall we do with Yahweh’s ark? Show us how we should send it to its place.”

3 Y ellos dijeron: Si enviáis el arca del Dios de Israel, no la enviéis vacía; mas le pagaréis la expiación de la culpa; y entonces seréis sanos, y conoceréis por qué no se apartó de vosotros su mano.

They said, “If you send away the ark of the God of Israel, don’t send it empty; but by all means return a trespass offering to him. Then you will be healed, and it will be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.”

4 Y ellos dijeron: ¿Y qué será la expiación de la culpa que le pagaremos? Y ellos respondieron: Conforme al número de los cardinales de los filisteos, cinco hemorroides de oro, y cinco ratones de oro, porque la misma plaga que todos tienen, tienen también vuestros príncipes.

Then they said, “What should the trespass offering be which we shall return to him?” They said, “Five golden tumors, and five golden mice, for the number of the lords of the Philistines; for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.

5 H aréis, pues, las formas de vuestras hemorroides, y las formas de vuestros ratones que destruyen la tierra, y daréis gloria al Dios de Israel; por ventura aliviará su mano de sobre vosotros, y de sobre vuestros dioses, y de sobre vuestra tierra.

Therefore you shall make images of your tumors, and images of your mice that mar the land; and you shall give glory to the God of Israel. Perhaps he will release his hand from you, from your gods, and from your land.

6 M as ¿por qué endurecéis vuestro corazón, como los egipcios y Faraón endurecieron su corazón? Después que los hubo así tratado, ¿no los dejaron ir, y se fueron?

Why then do you harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? When he had worked wonderfully among them, didn’t they let the people go, and they departed?

7 H aced, pues, ahora un carro nuevo, y tomad luego dos vacas que críen, a las cuales no haya sido puesto yugo, y uncid las vacas al carro, y haced volver de detrás de ellas sus becerros a casa.

“Now therefore take and prepare yourselves a new cart, and two milk cows, on which there has come no yoke; and tie the cows to the cart, and bring their calves home from them;

8 T omaréis luego el arca del SEÑOR, y la pondréis sobre el carro; y poned en una caja al lado de ella las alhajas de oro que le pagáis en expiación de la culpa; y la dejaréis que se vaya.

and take Yahweh’s ark, and lay it on the cart. Put the jewels of gold, which you return him for a trespass offering, in a coffer by its side; and send it away, that it may go.

9 Y mirad; si sube por el camino de su término a Bet-semes, él nos ha hecho este mal tan grande; y si no, seremos ciertos que su mano no nos hirió, nos ha sido accidente.

Behold; if it goes up by the way of its own border to Beth Shemesh, then he has done us this great evil; but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that struck us. It was a chance that happened to us.”

10 ¶ Y aquellos varones lo hicieron así; tomando dos vacas que criaban, las uncieron al carro, y encerraron en casa sus becerros.

The men did so, and took two milk cows, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home.

11 L uego pusieron el arca del SEÑOR sobre el carro, y la caja con los ratones de oro y con las formas de sus hemorroides.

They put Yahweh’s ark on the cart, and the coffer with the golden mice and the images of their tumors.

12 Y las vacas se fueron derecho por el camino de Bet-semes, e iban por un mismo camino andando y bramando, sin apartarse ni a diestra ni a siniestra; y los cardinales de los filisteos fueron tras ellas hasta el término de Bet-semes.

The cows took the straight way by the way to Beth Shemesh. They went along the highway, lowing as they went, and didn’t turn aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them to the border of Beth Shemesh.

13 Y los de Bet-semes segaban su cosecha de trigo en el valle; y alzando sus ojos vieron el arca, y se regocijaron cuando la vieron.

The people of Beth Shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley; and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it.

14 Y el carro vino al campo de Josué bet-semita, y paró allí porque allí había una gran piedra; y ellos cortaron la madera del carro, y ofrecieron las vacas en holocausto al SEÑOR.

The cart came into the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh, and stood there, where there was a great stone. Then they split the wood of the cart, and offered up the cows for a burnt offering to Yahweh.

15 Y los levitas bajaron el arca del SEÑOR, y la caja que estaba junto a ella, en la cual estaban las alhajas de oro, y las pusieron sobre aquella gran piedra; y los varones de Bet-semes sacrificaron holocaustos y mataron víctimas al SEÑOR en aquel día.

The Levites took down Yahweh’s ark, and the coffer that was with it, in which the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone; and the men of Beth Shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day to Yahweh.

16 L o cual viendo los cinco cardinales de los filisteos, se volvieron a Ecrón el mismo día.

When the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day.

17 E stas pues son las hemorroides de oro que pagaron los filisteos al SEÑOR en expiación por su culpa: por Asdod una, por Gaza una, por Ascalón una, por Gat una, por Ecrón una;

These are the golden tumors which the Philistines returned for a trespass offering to Yahweh: for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Ashkelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one;

18 y ratones de oro conforme al número de todas las ciudades de los filisteos pertenecientes a los cinco cardinales, en rescate por los de las ciudades fuertes y por los moradores de los campos, hasta la gran piedra sobre la cual pusieron el arca del SEÑOR. Tienen esto en memoria en el campo de Josué, bet-semita hasta hoy.

and the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fortified cities and of country villages, even to the great stone, on which they set down Yahweh’s ark. That stone remains to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh.

19 ¶ Entonces hirió Dios de los de Bet-semes, porque habían mirado el arca del SEÑOR; hirió en el pueblo setenta varones y cincuenta mil hombres. Y el pueblo se puso de luto, porque el SEÑOR había herido al pueblo de tan gran plaga.

He struck of the men of Beth Shemesh, because they had looked into Yahweh’s ark, he struck fifty thousand seventy of the men. Then the people mourned, because Yahweh had struck the people with a great slaughter.

20 Y dijeron los de Bet-semes: ¿Quién podrá estar delante del SEÑOR el Dios santo? ¿Y a quién subirá desde nosotros?

The men of Beth Shemesh said, “Who is able to stand before Yahweh, this holy God? To whom shall he go up from us?”

21 Y enviaron mensajeros a los de Quiriat-jearim, diciendo: Los filisteos han vuelto el arca del SEÑOR; descended, pues, y llevadla a vosotros.

They sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath Jearim, saying, “The Philistines have brought back Yahweh’s ark. Come down, and bring it up to yourselves.”
