1 A grippa i-a zis lui Pavel: – Ţi se dă voie să vorbeşti în apărarea ta! Atunci Pavel a întins mâna şi a început să se apere astfel:

And Agrippa said to Paul, It is permitted thee to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretching out his hand answered in his defence:

2 – Rege Agrippa, mă consider fericit că urmează să mă apăr astăzi înaintea ta, cu privire la toate lucrurile de care sunt acuzat de iudei,

I count myself happy, king Agrippa, in having to answer to-day before thee concerning all of which I am accused by the Jews,

3 m ai ales pentru că tu eşti cunoscător al tuturor obiceiurilor şi controverselor iudeilor. De aceea, te rog să mă asculţi cu răbdare.

especially because thou art acquainted with all the customs and questions which are among the Jews; wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently.

4 T oţi iudeii cunosc felul în care mi-am trăit viaţa încă din tinereţe, viaţă pe care mi-am petrecut-o de la început în mijlocul neamului meu şi în Ierusalim.

My manner of life then from my youth, which from its commencement was passed among my nation in Jerusalem, know all the Jews,

5 D acă vor să mărturisească, ei mă cunosc de mult timp şi ştiu că am trăit ca fariseu, după cea mai strictă partidă a religiei noastre.

who knew me before from the outset, if they would bear witness, that according to the strictest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.

6 I ar acum, stau aici ca să fiu judecat din pricina nădejdii în promisiunea pe care a făcut-o Dumnezeu strămoşilor noştri,

And now I stand to be judged because of the hope of the promise made by God to our fathers,

7 p romisiune pe care cele douăsprezece seminţii ale noastre, slujindu-I lui Dumnezeu cu seriozitate zi şi noapte, speră să o primească. Pentru această nădejde, rege, sunt acuzat eu de către iudei!

to which our whole twelve tribes serving incessantly day and night hope to arrive; about which hope, O king, I am accused of Jews.

8 C e, vi se pare de necrezut faptul că Dumnezeu învie morţii?!

Why should it be judged a thing incredible in your sight if God raises the dead?

9 Î ntr-adevăr, eu însumi credeam că trebuie să fac multe lucruri împotriva Numelui lui Isus din Nazaret,

I indeed myself thought that I ought to do much against the name of Jesus the Nazaraean.

10 ş i aşa am şi făcut în Ierusalim: cu autoritatea primită de la conducătorii preoţilor i-am băgat în închisoare pe mulţi sfinţi, iar când erau condamnaţi la moarte îmi dădeam şi eu votul împotriva lor.

Which also I did in Jerusalem, and myself shut up in prisons many of the saints, having received the authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death I gave my vote.

11 D e asemenea, pedepsindu-i adesea prin toate sinagogile, m-am străduit să-i fac să blasfemieze; şi fiindcă eram deosebit de furios pe ei, i-am persecutat chiar şi în cetăţile străine!

And often punishing them in all the synagogues, I compelled them to blaspheme. And, being exceedingly furious against them, I persecuted them even to cities out.

12 C u acestea în gând, m-am dus în Damasc, având autoritate şi putere deplină de la conducătorii preoţilor.

And when, in this, I was journeying to Damascus, with authority and power from the chief priests,

13 P e la mijlocul zilei, rege, în timp ce eram pe drum, am văzut strălucind împrejurul meu şi împrejurul celor ce călătoreau împreună cu mine, o lumină din cer, a cărei strălucire o întrecea pe cea a soarelui.

at mid-day, on the way, I saw, O king, a light above the brightness of the sun, shining from heaven round about me and those who were journeying with me.

14 T oţi am căzut la pământ, iar eu am auzit un glas care-mi zicea în limba aramaică: „Saul, Saul, de ce Mă persecuţi? Îţi este greu să dai cu piciorul într-un ţepuş! “

And, when we were all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? hard for thee to kick against goads.

15 E u am întrebat: „Cine eşti, Doamne ?“ Domnul mi-a răspuns: „Eu sunt Isus, Cel pe Care tu Îl persecuţi!

And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest:

16 D ar ridică-te şi stai în picioare! Căci M-am arătat ţie ca să te numesc slujitor şi martor atât al lucrurilor în care M-ai văzut pe Mine, cât şi al lucrurilor în care Mă voi arăta ţie.

but rise up and stand on thy feet; for, for this purpose have I appeared to thee, to appoint thee to be a servant and a witness both of what thou hast seen, and of what I shall appear to thee in,

17 T e-am scos din mijlocul poporului tău şi din mijlocul neamurilor la care te trimit,

taking thee out from among the people, and the nations, to whom I send thee,

18 c a să le deschizi ochii să se întoarcă de la întuneric la lumină şi de sub autoritatea lui Satan la Dumnezeu şi să primească, prin credinţa în Mine, iertare de păcate şi moştenire alături de cei sfinţiţi.“

to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive remission of sins and inheritance among them that are sanctified by faith in me.

19 D e aceea, rege Agrippa, n-am fost neascultător faţă de viziunea cerească,

Whereupon, king Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision;

20 c i le-am proclamat mai întâi celor din Damasc, apoi celor din Ierusalim şi din întreaga regiune a Iudeii, iar apoi neamurilor că trebuie să se pocăiască şi să se întoarcă la Dumnezeu făcând fapte vrednice de pocăinţă.

but have, first to those both in Damascus and Jerusalem, and to all the region of Judaea, and to the nations, announced that they should repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance.

21 P entru aceste lucruri m-au prins iudeii în Templu şi au încercat să mă omoare!

On account of these things the Jews, having seized me in the temple, attempted to lay hands on and destroy me.

22 Î nsă până în ziua de azi am primit ajutor de la Dumnezeu şi stau aici, depunând mărturie atât înaintea celor mici, cât şi înaintea celor mari, fără să spun nimic în afară de ceea ce Profeţii şi Moise au zis că urmează să se întâmple,

Having therefore met with help which is from God, I have stood firm unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying nothing else than those things which both the prophets and Moses have said should happen,

23 ş i anume că Cristos va trebui să sufere şi, prin faptul că va fi primul înviat dintre cei morţi, va vesti lumină atât poporului Său, cât şi neamurilor.

whether Christ should suffer; whether he first, through resurrection of dead, should announce light both to the people and to the nations.

24 Î n timp ce Pavel se apăra astfel, Festus a zis cu glas tare: – Ţi-ai ieşit din minţi, Pavel! Învăţătura ta cea multă te face să dai în nebunie!

And as he answered for his defence with these things, Festus says with a loud voice, Thou art mad, Paul; much learning turns thee to madness.

25 Î nsă Pavel i-a răspuns: – Nu mi-am ieşit din minţi, prea alesule Festus, ci cuvintele pe care le rostesc ţin de adevăr şi de o judecată sănătoasă!

But Paul said, I am not mad, most excellent Festus, but utter words of truth and soberness;

26 P entru că regele ştie despre aceste lucruri, eu pot să-i vorbesc deschis, întrucât sunt convins că nu i-a scăpat nimic din acestea, deoarece nu s-au întâmplat într-un colţ!

for the king is informed about these things, to whom also I speak with all freedom. For I am persuaded that of these things nothing is hidden from him; for this was not done in a corner.

27 C rezi tu în Profeţi, rege Agrippa? Ştiu că tu crezi!

King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest.

28 Î nsă Agrippa i-a zis lui Pavel: – Curând mai vrei tu să mă convingi să mă fac creştin!

And Agrippa to Paul, In a little thou persuadest me to become a Christian.

29 P avel i-a răspuns: – Fie curând, fie târziu, mă rog lui Dumnezeu ca nu numai tu, ci toţi cei ce mă ascultă astăzi să devină aşa cum sunt eu, în afară de lanţurile acestea!

And Paul, I would to God, both in little and in much, that not only thou, but all who have heard me this day, should become such as I also am, except these bonds.

30 R egele, guvernatorul, Berenice şi toţi cei ce şedeau împreună cu ei s-au ridicat

And the king stood up, and the governor and Bernice, and those who sat with them,

31 ş i, în timp ce plecau, îşi spuneau unii altora: „Omul acesta n-a făcut nimic vrednic de moarte sau de lanţuri!“

and having gone apart, they spoke to one another saying, This man does nothing worthy of death or of bonds.

32 A grippa i-a zis lui Festus: „Omul acesta ar fi putut fi eliberat dacă n-ar fi făcut apel la Cezar!“

And Agrippa said to Festus, This man might have been let go if he had not appealed to Caesar.
