1 A tunci Domnul i-a spus lui Iosua:

And Jehovah spoke to Joshua, saying,

2 „ Spune-le israeliţilor: «Alegeţi-vă cetăţile de refugiu despre care v-am vorbit prin Moise.

Speak to the children of Israel, saying, Appoint for yourselves the cities of refuge, whereof I spoke unto you through Moses,

3 E le vor fi un loc de refugiu pentru ucigaşul care va omorî fără voie o persoană (adică din greşeală) şi care va vrea să scape de răzbunătorul sângelui.

that the slayer who unwittingly without intent smiteth any one mortally may flee thither: and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood.

4 C ând se va refugia într-una dintre aceste cetăţi, să se oprească la intrarea porţii acelei cetăţi şi să le spună celor din sfatul bătrânilor acelei cetăţi ce i s-a întâmplat. Ei să-l primească în cetate şi să-i dea un loc ca să locuiască împreună cu ei.

And he shall flee unto one of those cities and stand at the entrance of the city-gate, and shall declare his matter in the ears of the elders of that city; and they shall take him into the city unto them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them.

5 D acă răzbunătorul sângelui îl va urmări, ei să nu-l dea pe ucigaş în mâinile lui, deoarece el l-a ucis fără voie pe semenul său, fără să-l fi urât mai dinainte.

And if the avenger of blood pursue after him, they shall not deliver the slayer up into his hand; for he smote his neighbour unwittingly, and hated him not previously.

6 U cigaşul să rămână în cetatea aceea până se va înfăţişa înaintea adunării ca să fie judecat şi până la moartea marelui preot care va fi în slujbă în acea perioadă. Numai atunci se va putea întoarce din cetatea în care fugise în cetatea şi în casa sa.»“

And he shall dwell in that city, until he have stood before the assembly in judgment, until the death of the high-priest that shall be in those days; then shall the slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.

7 E i au pus deoparte Kedeşul, în Galileea, în regiunea muntoasă a lui Neftali, Şehemul, în regiunea muntoasă a lui Efraim şi Chiriat-Arba (Hebron), în regiunea muntoasă a lui Iuda;

And they hallowed Kedesh in Galilee in the hill-country of Naphtali, and Shechem in the hill-country of Ephraim, and Kirjath-Arba, that is, Hebron, in the hill-country of Judah.

8 i ar de cealaltă parte a Iordanului, la răsărit de Ierihon, au ales Beţerul, în pustie, în podişul seminţiei lui Ruben; Ramotul, în Ghilad, pe teritoriul seminţiei lui Gad şi Golanul, în Başan, pe teritoriul seminţiei lui Manase.

And beyond the Jordan from Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness, in the plateau, out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan of the tribe of Manasseh.

9 A cestea erau cetăţile alese pentru toţi israeliţii şi pentru străinii care locuiau în mijlocul lor, pentru ca orice ucigaş care omora fără voie o persoană să poată fugi acolo şi să nu fie omorât de răzbunătorul sângelui înainte de a se prezenta în faţa adunării.

These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, that whosoever smiteth any one mortally without intent might flee thither, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the assembly.
