1 D omnul i-a zis lui Iosua: „Nu te teme şi nu te înspăimânta. Adună întreaga oştire şi începeţi asediul cetăţii Ai! Iată că-l dau în mâna ta pe regele din Ai împreună cu poporul său, cetatea lui şi tot teritoriul lui.

And Jehovah said to Joshua, Fear not, neither be dismayed. Take with thee all the people of war, and arise, go up to Ai. See, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land.

2 S ă-i faci cetăţii Ai şi regelui ei la fel cum i-ai făcut Ierihonului şi regelui lui. Totuşi veţi putea păstra ca pradă de război lucrurile de preţ şi animalele. Pune oameni la pândă în spatele cetăţii.“

And thou shalt do to Ai and to its king as thou didst to Jericho and to its king; only, the spoil thereof and the cattle thereof shall ye take as prey for yourselves. Set an ambush against the city behind it.

3 I osua a pornit cu toată oştirea ca să asedieze cetatea Ai. Iosua a ales treizeci de mii de războinici şi i-a trimis în timpul nopţii,

And Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up to Ai. And Joshua chose thirty thousand valiant men, and sent them away by night.

4 p oruncindu-le: „Puneţi-vă la pândă în spatele cetăţii, astfel încât să nu vă îndepărtaţi prea mult de cetate şi să fiţi pregătiţi cu toţii de luptă.

And he commanded them, saying, See, ye shall be in ambush against the city, behind the city: go not very far from the city, and be all of you ready.

5 E u şi toţi oamenii care sunt cu mine ne vom apropia de cetate, iar când ei vor ieşi împotriva noastră ca şi prima dată, noi ne vom retrage dinaintea lor.

And I and all the people that are with me will approach to the city; and it shall come to pass when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them.

6 E i vor ieşi afară după noi şi astfel îi vom scoate din cetate. Căci ei vor zice: «Fug dinaintea noastră ca şi prima dată!» Când noi vom fugi dinaintea lor,

And they will come out after us till we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first; and we will flee before them.

7 v oi să ieşiţi de la pândă şi să ocupaţi cetatea, căci Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, o va da în mâinile voastre.

And ye shall rise up from the ambush and take possession of the city; and Jehovah your God will deliver it into your hand.

8 D upă ce veţi cuceri cetatea, să-i daţi foc! Să faceţi întocmai după Cuvântul Domnului. Fiţi cu luare-aminte la ce v-am poruncit!“

And it shall be when ye have taken the city, that ye shall set the city on fire; according to the word of Jehovah shall ye do. See, I have commanded you.

9 A poi Iosua i-a trimis. Ei s-au dus şi s-au pus la pândă între Betel şi Ai, înnoptând la apus de cetatea Ai. Iosua însă a petrecut noaptea în mijlocul poporului.

And Joshua sent them forth; and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Bethel and Ai, on the west of Ai. And Joshua lodged that night among the people.

10 I osua s-a sculat dis-de-dimineaţă şi după ce a cercetat poporul a pornit în fruntea lor spre Ai, însoţit de sfatul bătrânilor lui Israel.

And Joshua rose early in the morning, and inspected the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.

11 T oţi ostaşii care erau cu el au înaintat şi s-au apropiat de cetate. Când au ajuns înaintea cetăţii, şi-au aşezat tabăra la nord de Ai, între ei şi cetate existând o vale.

And all the people of war that were with him went up, and drew near, and came before the city; and they encamped on the north of Ai; and the valley was between them and Ai.

12 I osua luase deja aproape cinci mii de războinici şi-i pusese la pândă între Betel şi Ai, în partea de apus a cetăţii.

Now he had taken about five thousand men, and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west of the city.

13 D upă ce şi-a organizat astfel oamenii, atât pe cei din tabăra principală în partea de nord a cetăţii, cât şi pe cei ce stăteau la pândă în partea de apus a cetăţii, Iosua a înaintat noaptea în mijlocul văii.

And when they had set the people, the whole camp on the north of the city, and their ambush on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.

14 C ând regele din Ai a văzut lucrul acesta, el şi oamenii din cetate s-au sculat în grabă dis-de-dimineaţă şi au ieşit să lupte împotriva lui Israel. El şi oamenii lui s-au îndreptat într-un loc anume dinaintea Arabei, fără să ştie că în spatele cetăţii stăteau oameni la pândă.

And it came to pass when the king of Ai saw it, that the men of the city hasted and rose early, and went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at the appointed place before the plain. But he knew not that there was an ambush against him behind the city.

15 I osua şi toată oştirea s-au prefăcut că sunt înfrânţi şi au fugit pe drumul către pustie.

And Joshua and all Israel let themselves be beaten before them; and they fled by the way of the wilderness.

16 A tunci toată oştirea din Ai a fost chemată să-i urmărească. Ei au pornit în urmărirea lor şi Iosua i-a atras astfel în afara cetăţii.

And all the people that were in the city were called together to pursue after them; and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.

17 N u a rămas nici un bărbat în Ai sau în Betel care să nu fi ieşit după Israel. Au lăsat cetatea deschisă şi au pornit în urmărirea lui Israel.

And not a man remained in Ai and Bethel that went not out after Israel; and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.

18 A tunci Domnul i-a zis lui Iosua: „Îndreaptă spre Ai suliţa pe care o ţii în mână, căci am să dau în mâna ta cetatea!“ Iosua şi-a îndreptat spre Ai suliţa pe care o ţinea în mână.

And Jehovah said to Joshua, Stretch out the javelin that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thy hand. And Joshua stretched out the javelin that he had in his hand toward the city.

19 Î n momentul în care şi-a întins mâna, cei ce stăteau la pândă au ieşit repede din locul în care erau, au intrat în cetate, au capturat-o şi s-au grăbit să-i dea foc.

And the ambush arose quickly from their place, and they ran when he stretched out his hand, and came into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire.

20 U itându-se înapoi, oamenii din Ai au observat fumul cetăţii ridicându-se spre cer. Ei n-au mai putut să scape nici într-o parte nici într-alta, căci oştirea israelită care se retrăgea spre pustie s-a întors împotriva lor.

And the men of Ai turned and saw, and behold, the smoke of the city went up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way; and the people that fled to the wilderness turned upon the pursuers.

21 Î ntr-adevăr, când Iosua şi oştirea lui Israel au văzut că cei ce stătuseră la pândă capturaseră cetatea şi că se ridica fum din cetate, s-au întors împotriva oamenilor din Ai şi au început să-i lovească.

When Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city went up, they turned again, and slew the men of Ai.

22 C eilalţi au ieşit şi ei din cetate împotriva urmăritorilor, astfel încât Israel i-a prins din două părţi şi i-a lovit până când i-a nimicit, fără să lase vreun supravieţuitor sau vreun fugar.

And the others went out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side; and they smote them, until they let none of them escape or flee away.

23 L -au capturat doar pe regele din Ai şi l-au adus la Iosua.

And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.

24 D upă ce Israel i-a ucis pe toţi locuitorii din Ai, în câmpie şi în pustia în care îi urmăriseră, după ce aceştia au căzut cu toţii, fiind nimiciţi prin sabie, oştirea lui Israel s-a întors la Ai şi a trecut cetatea prin ascuţişul sabiei.

And it came to pass when Israel had ended slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they had chased them, and they had all fallen by the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all Israel returned to Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.

25 T oţi cei care au fost omorâţi în ziua aceea, bărbaţi şi femei, au fost în număr de douăsprezece mii – întreaga populaţie a cetăţii Ai.

And so it was, that all who fell that day, men as well as women, were twelve thousand, all the people of Ai.

26 I osua nu şi-a retras mâna pe care o ţinea întinsă cu suliţa, până când nu au fost nimiciţi toţi locuitorii din Ai.

And Joshua did not draw back his hand, which he had stretched out with the javelin, until they had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

27 I srael a păstrat însă ca pradă de război animalele şi lucrurile de preţ din cetate, potrivit poruncii date de Domnul lui Iosua.

Only, the cattle and the spoil of the city Israel took as prey to themselves, according to the word of Jehovah which he had commanded Joshua.

28 I osua a ars cetatea Ai şi a făcut din ea pentru totdeauna o movilă de moloz, aşa cum se vede de atunci încoace.

And Joshua burned Ai, and made it an everlasting heap of desolation to this day.

29 P e regele din Ai l-a spânzurat de un copac şi l-a lăsat acolo până seara. La apusul soarelui însă Iosua a poruncit să-i coboare trupul din copac şi să fie aruncat la intrarea porţii cetăţii, după care au ridicat peste el o movilă mare de pietre care se poate vedea şi astăzi. Reînnoirea legământului pe muntele Ebal

And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until the evening; and at the going down of the sun Joshua commanded, and they took his carcase down from the tree, and threw it down at the entrance of the gate of the city, and raised upon it a great heap of stones, to this day.

30 A tunci Iosua a zidit un altar Domnului, Dumnezeul lui Israel, pe muntele Ebal,

Then Joshua built an altar to Jehovah the God of Israel, in mount Ebal,

31 a şa cum Moise, robul Domnului, le poruncise israeliţilor potrivit celor scrise în Cartea Legii lui Moise: un altar din pietre întregi, neatinse de unelte din fier, altar pe care să aducă Domnului arderi de tot şi jertfe de pace.

as Moses the servant of Jehovah had commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which iron had not been lifted up. And they offered up burnt-offerings on it to Jehovah, and sacrificed peace-offerings.

32 A colo, înaintea israeliţilor, Iosua a scris pe pietre o copie a Legii lui Moise.

And he wrote there on the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he had written before the children of Israel.

33 Î ntregul Israel, bătrânii, dregătorii şi judecătorii lui stăteau de-o parte şi de alta a Chivotului, în faţa preoţilor leviţi care duceau Chivotul Legământului cu Domnul. Jumătate din popor, străini sau evrei, erau aşezaţi în faţa muntelui Garizim, iar cealaltă jumătate în faţa muntelui Ebal, aşa cum poruncise mai înainte Moise, robul Domnului, în scopul binecuvântării poporului Israel.

And all Israel, and their elders, and their officers and judges, stood on this side and on that side of the ark before the priests the Levites, who bore the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, as well the stranger as the home-born; half of them toward mount Gerizim, and the other half of them toward mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of Jehovah had commanded, that they should bless the people of Israel, in the beginning.

34 A poi Iosua a citit toate cuvintele Legii – binecuvântările şi blestemele – potrivit tuturor celor scrise în Cartea Legii.

And afterwards he read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the book of the law.

35 N u a existat nici o poruncă din toate cele poruncite de Moise pe care să nu o fi citit Iosua înaintea întregii adunări a lui Israel, inclusiv înaintea femeilor, a copiilor, precum şi a străinilor care trăiau în mijlocul lor.

There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded which Joshua read not before the whole congregation of Israel, and the women, and the children, and the strangers that lived among them.
