1 “ I made a covenant with my eyes, how then should I look lustfully at a young woman?

Făcusem un legămînt cu ochii mei, şi nu mi-aş fi oprit privirile asupra unei fecioare.

Dar ce soartă mi -a păstrat Dumnezeu de sus? Ce moştenire mi -a trimes Cel Atotputernic din ceruri?

3 I s it not calamity to the unrighteous, and disaster to the workers of iniquity?

Peirea nu -i oare pentru cel rău, şi nenorocirea pentru cei ce fac fărădelege?

4 D oesn’t he see my ways, and number all my steps?

N'a cunoscut Dumnezeu căile mele? Nu mi -a numărat El toţi paşii mei?

5 “ If I have walked with falsehood, and my foot has hurried to deceit

Dacă am umblat cu minciuna, de mi -a alergat piciorul după înşelăciune:

6 ( let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know my integrity);

să mă cîntărească Dumnezeu în cumpăna celor fără prihană, şi-mi va vedea neprihănirea!

7 i f my step has turned out of the way, if my heart walked after my eyes, if any defilement has stuck to my hands,

De mi s'a abătut pasul depe calea cea dreaptă, de mi -a urmat inima ochii, de s'a lipit vreo întinăciune de mînile mele,

8 t hen let me sow, and let another eat. Yes, let the produce of my field be rooted out.

atunci eu să samăn şi altul să secere, şi odraslele mele să fie desrădăcinate!

9 “ If my heart has been enticed to a woman, and I have laid wait at my neighbor’s door,

Dacă mi -a fost amăgită inima de vreo femeie, dacă am pîndit la uşa aproapelui meu,

10 t hen let my wife grind for another, and let others sleep with her.

atunci nevastă-mea să macine pentru altul, şi s'o necinstească alţii!

11 F or that would be a heinous crime. Yes, it would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges:

Căci aceasta ar fi fost o nelegiuire, o fărădelege vrednică să fie pedepsită de judecători,

12 F or it is a fire that consumes to destruction, and would root out all my increase.

un foc care mistuie pînă la nimicire, şi care mi-ar fi prăpădit toată bogăţia.

13 “ If I have despised the cause of my male servant or of my female servant, when they contended with me;

De aş fi nesocotit dreptul slugii sau slujnicei mele, cînd se certau cu mine,

14 W hat then shall I do when God rises up? When he visits, what shall I answer him?

ce aş putea să fac, cînd se ridică Dumnezeu? Ce aş putea răspunde cînd pedepseşte El?

15 D idn’t he who made me in the womb make him? Didn’t one fashion us in the womb?

Cel ce m'a făcut pe mine în pîntecele mamei mele, nu l -a făcut şi pe el? Oare nu ne -a întocmit acelaş Dumnezeu în pîntecele mamei?

16 “ If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,

Dacă n'am dat săracilor ce-mi cereau, dacă am făcut să se topească de plîns ochii văduvei,

17 o r have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless has not eaten of it

dacă mi-am mîncat singur pînea, fără ca orfanul să-şi fi avut şi el partea lui din ea,

18 ( no, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, her have I guided from my mother’s womb);

eu, care din tinereţă l-am crescut ca un tată, eu, care dela naştere am sprijinit pe văduvă;

19 i f I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or that the needy had no covering;

dacă am văzut pe cel nenorocit ducînd lipsă de haine, pe cel lipsit neavînd învălitoare,

dacă am ridicat mîna împotriva orfanului, pentrucă mă simţeam sprijinit de judecători;

22 t hen let my shoulder fall from the shoulder blade, and my arm be broken from the bone.

atunci, să mi se deslipească umărul dela încheietură, să-mi cadă braţul şi să se sfărîme!

23 F or calamity from God is a terror to me. Because his majesty, I can do nothing.

Căci mă temeam de pedeapsa lui Dumnezeu, şi nu puteam lucra astfel din pricina măreţiei Lui.

24 “ If I have made gold my hope, and have said to the fine gold, ‘You are my confidence;’

Dacă mi-am pus încrederea în aur, dacă am zis aurului:, Tu eşti nădejdea mea`;

25 I f I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much;

dacă m'am îngîmfat de mărimea averilor mele, de mulţimea bogăţiilor pe cari le dobîndisem;

26 i f I have seen the sun when it shined, or the moon moving in splendor,

dacă am privit soarele cînd strălucea, luna cînd înainta măreaţă,

27 a nd my heart has been secretly enticed, and my hand threw a kiss from my mouth,

şi dacă mi s'a lăsat amăgită inima în taină, dacă le-am aruncat sărutări, ducîndu-mi mîna la gură:

28 t his also would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges; for I should have denied the God who is above.

şi aceasta este tot o fărădelege care trebuie pedepsită de judecători, căci m'aş fi lepădat de Dumnezeul cel de sus!

29 “ If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him who hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him;

Dacă m'am bucurat de nenorocirea vrăjmaşului meu, dacă am sărit de bucurie cînd l -a atins nenorocirea,

30 ( yes, I have not allowed my mouth to sin by asking his life with a curse);

eu, care n'am dat voie limbii mele să păcătuiască, să -i ceară moartea cu blestem;

31 i f the men of my tent have not said, ‘Who can find one who has not been filled with his meat?’

dacă nu ziceau oamenii din cortul meu:, Unde este cel ce nu s'a săturat din carnea lui?`

32 ( the foreigner has not camped in the street, but I have opened my doors to the traveler);

Dacă petrecea străinul noaptea afară, dacă nu mi-aş fi deschis uşa să intre călătorul;

33 i f like Adam I have covered my transgressions, by hiding my iniquity in my heart,

dacă mi-am ascuns fărădelegile, ca oamenii, şi mi-am închis nelegiuirile în sîn,

34 b ecause I feared the great multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and didn’t go out of the door—

pentrucă mă temeam de mulţime, pentrucă mă temeam de dispreţul familiilor, ţinîndu-mă deoparte şi necutezînd să-mi trec pragul...

35 o h that I had one to hear me! (behold, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me); let the accuser write my indictment!

Oh! de aş găsi pe cineva să m'asculte! Iată apărarea mea, iscălită de mine: să-mi răspundă Cel Atotputernic! Cine-mi va da plîngerea iscălită de protivnicul meu?

36 S urely I would carry it on my shoulder; and I would bind it to me as a crown.

Ca să -i port scrisoarea pe umăr, s'o leg de fruntea mea ca o cunună;

37 I would declare to him the number of my steps. as a prince would I go near to him.

să -i dau socoteală de toţi paşii mei, să mă apropii de el ca un domn.

38 I f my land cries out against me, and its furrows weep together;

Dacă pămîntul meu strigă împotriva mea, şi dacă brazdele lui varsă lacrămi;

39 i f I have eaten its fruits without money, or have caused its owners to lose their life,

dacă i-am mîncat roada fără s'o fi plătit, şi dacă am întristat sufletul vechilor lui stăpîni:

40 l et briers grow instead of wheat, and stinkweed instead of barley.” The words of Job are ended.

atunci să crească spini din el în loc de grîu, şi neghină în loc de orz!`` Sfîrşitul cuvintelor lui Iov.
