The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold, but Yahweh tests the hearts.

4 E l malo está atento al labio inicuo; Y el mentiroso escucha la lengua detractora.

An evildoer heeds wicked lips. A liar gives ear to a mischievous tongue.

5 E l que escarnece al pobre afrenta a su Hacedor; Y el que se alegra de la calamidad no quedará sin castigo.

Whoever mocks the poor reproaches his Maker. He who is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.

6 C orona de los viejos son los nietos, Y la honra de los hijos, sus padres.

Children’s children are the crown of old men; the glory of children are their parents.

7 N o conviene al necio la altilocuencia;!! Cuánto menos al príncipe el labio mentiroso!

Arrogant speech isn’t fitting for a fool, much less do lying lips fit a prince.

8 P iedra preciosa es el soborno para el que lo practica; Adondequiera que se vuelve, halla prosperidad.

A bribe is a precious stone in the eyes of him who gives it; wherever he turns, he prospers.

9 E l que cubre la falta busca amistad; Mas el que la divulga, aparta al amigo.

He who covers an offense promotes love; but he who repeats a matter separates best friends.

10 L a reprensión aprovecha al entendido, Más que cien azotes al necio.

A rebuke enters deeper into one who has understanding than a hundred lashes into a fool.

11 E l rebelde no busca sino el mal, Y mensajero cruel será enviado contra él.

An evil man seeks only rebellion; therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.

12 M ejor es encontrarse con una osa a la cual han robado sus cachorros, Que con un fatuo en su necedad.

Let a bear robbed of her cubs meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.

13 E l que da mal por bien, No se apartará el mal de su casa.

Whoever rewards evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.

14 E l que comienza la discordia es como quien suelta las aguas; Deja, pues, la contienda, antes que se enrede.

The beginning of strife is like breaching a dam, therefore stop contention before quarreling breaks out.

15 E l que justifica al impío, y el que condena al justo, Ambos son igualmente abominación a Jehová.

He who justifies the wicked, and he who condemns the righteous, both of them alike are an abomination to Yahweh.

16 ¿ De qué sirve el precio en la mano del necio para comprar sabiduría, No teniendo entendimiento?

Why is there money in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, since he has no understanding?

17 E n todo tiempo ama el amigo, Y es como un hermano en tiempo de angustia.

A friend loves at all times; and a brother is born for adversity.

18 E l hombre falto de entendimiento presta fianzas, Y sale por fiador en presencia de su amigo.

A man void of understanding strikes hands, and becomes collateral in the presence of his neighbor.

19 E l que ama la disputa, ama la transgresión; Y el que abre demasiado la puerta busca su ruina.

He who loves disobedience loves strife. One who builds a high gate seeks destruction.

20 E l perverso de corazón nunca hallará el bien, Y el que revuelve con su lengua caerá en el mal.

One who has a perverse heart doesn’t find prosperity, and one who has a deceitful tongue falls into trouble.

21 E l que engendra al insensato, para su tristeza lo engendra; Y el padre del necio no se alegrará.

He who becomes the father of a fool grieves. The father of a fool has no joy.

22 E l corazón alegre constituye buen remedio; Mas el espíritu triste seca los huesos.

A cheerful heart makes good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

23 E l impío toma soborno del seno Para pervertir las sendas de la justicia.

A wicked man receives a bribe in secret, to pervert the ways of justice.

24 E n el rostro del entendido aparece la sabiduría; Mas los ojos del necio vagan hasta el extremo de la tierra.

Wisdom is before the face of one who has understanding, but the eyes of a fool wander to the ends of the earth.

25 E l hijo necio es pesadumbre de su padre, Y amargura a la que lo dio a luz.

A foolish son brings grief to his father, and bitterness to her who bore him.

26 C iertamente no es bueno condenar al justo, Ni herir a los nobles que hacen lo recto.

Also to punish the righteous is not good, nor to flog officials for their integrity.

27 E l que ahorra sus palabras tiene sabiduría; De espíritu prudente es el hombre entendido.

He who spares his words has knowledge. He who is even tempered is a man of understanding.

28 A un el necio, cuando calla, es contado por sabio; El que cierra sus labios es entendido.

Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is counted wise. When he shuts his lips, he is thought to be discerning.
