1 D espués de estas cosas había una fiesta de los judíos, y Jesús subió a Jerusalén.

After these things was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

2 E n Jerusalén, cerca de la puerta de las ovejas, hay un estanque, llamado en hebreo Betesda, el cual tiene cinco pórticos.

Now there is in Jerusalem, at the sheepgate, a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches.

3 E n ellos yacían muchos enfermos, ciegos, cojos y paralíticos [que esperaban el movimiento del agua,

In these lay a multitude of sick, blind, lame, withered, [awaiting the moving of the water.

4 p orque un ángel descendía al estanque de vez en cuando, y agitaba el agua; y el primero que descendía al estanque después del movimiento del agua, quedaba sano de cualquier enfermedad que tuviera.]

For an angel descended at a certain season in the pool and troubled the water. Whoever therefore first went in after the troubling of the water became well, whatever disease he laboured under.]

5 A llí había un hombre que hacía treinta y ocho años que estaba enfermo.

But there was a certain man there who had been suffering under his infirmity thirty and eight years.

6 C uando Jesús lo vio acostado, y se enteró de que llevaba ya mucho tiempo así, le dijo: «¿Quieres ser sano?»

Jesus seeing this lying, and knowing that he was now a great length of time, says to him, Wouldest thou become well?

7 E l enfermo le respondió: «Señor, no tengo a nadie que me meta en el estanque cuando el agua se agita; y en lo que llego, otro baja antes que yo.»

The infirm answered him, Sir, I have not a man, in order, when the water has been troubled, to cast me into the pool; but while I am coming another descends before me.

8 J esús le dijo: «Levántate, toma tu lecho, y vete.»

Jesus says to him, Arise, take up thy couch and walk.

9 Y al instante aquel hombre fue sanado, y tomó su lecho y se fue. Pero aquel día era día de reposo,

And immediately the man became well, and took up his couch and walked: and on that day was sabbath.

10 a sí que los judíos le dijeron a aquel que había sido sanado: «Hoy es día de reposo; no te está permitido llevar tu lecho.»

The Jews therefore said to the healed, It is sabbath, it is not permitted thee to take up thy couch.

11 P ero él les respondió: «El mismo que me sanó fue el que me dijo: “Toma tu lecho y anda”.»

He answered them, He that made me well, he said to me, Take up thy couch and walk.

12 E ntonces le preguntaron: «¿Y quién fue el que te dijo: “Toma tu lecho y anda”?»

They asked him, Who is the man who said to thee, Take up thy couch and walk?

13 P ero el que había sido sanado no sabía quién lo había sanado, pues Jesús se había apartado de la gente que estaba en aquel lugar.

But he that had been healed knew not who it was, for Jesus had slidden away, there being a crowd in the place.

14 D espués Jesús lo encontró en el templo, y le dijo: «Como puedes ver, has sido sanado; así que no peques más, para que no te sobrevenga algo peor.»

After these things Jesus finds him in the temple, and said to him, Behold, thou art become well: sin no more, that something worse do not happen to thee.

15 A quel hombre se fue, y les hizo saber a los judíos que el que lo había sanado era Jesús,

The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.

16 y por eso los judíos lo perseguían y procuraban matarlo, porque hacía esto en el día de reposo.

And for this the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he had done these things on sabbath.

17 P ero Jesús les respondió: «Hasta ahora mi Padre trabaja, y yo también trabajo.»

But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto and I work.

18 P or esto los judíos con más ganas procuraban matarlo, porque no sólo quebrantaba el día de reposo sino que, además, decía que Dios mismo era su Padre, con lo cual se hacía igual a Dios. La autoridad del Hijo

For this therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he had not only violated the sabbath, but also said that God was his own Father, making himself equal with God.

19 E ntonces Jesús les dijo: «De cierto, de cierto les digo: El Hijo no puede hacer nada por sí mismo, sino lo que ve que el Padre hace; porque todo lo que el Padre hace, eso mismo lo hace el Hijo.

Jesus therefore answered and said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, The Son can do nothing of himself save whatever he sees the Father doing: for whatever things he does, these things also the Son does in like manner.

20 Y es que el Padre ama al Hijo, y le muestra todo lo que él hace; y mayores obras que éstas le mostrará, para el asombro de ustedes.

For the Father loves the Son and shews him all things which he himself does; and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may wonder.

21 P orque así como el Padre levanta a los muertos, y les da vida, así también el Hijo da vida a los que él quiere.

For even as the Father raises the dead and quickens, thus the Son also quickens whom he will:

22 P ues el Padre no juzga a nadie, sino que todo el juicio se lo ha dado al Hijo,

for neither does the Father judge any one, but has given all judgment to the Son;

23 p ara que todos honren al Hijo tal y como honran al Padre. El que no honra al Hijo, no honra al Padre que lo envió.

that all may honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He who honours not the Son, honours not the Father who has sent him.

24 D e cierto, de cierto les digo: El que oye mi palabra, y cree al que me envió, tiene vida eterna; y no será condenado, sino que ha pasado de muerte a vida.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, that he that hears my word, and believes him that has sent me, has life eternal, and does not come into judgment, but is passed out of death into life.

25 D e cierto, de cierto les digo: La hora viene, y ya llegó, cuando los muertos oirán la voz del Hijo de Dios; y los que la oigan vivirán.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, that an hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that have heard shall live.

26 P orque así como el Padre tiene vida en sí mismo, así también le ha dado al Hijo el tener vida en sí mismo;

For even as the Father has life in himself, so he has given to the Son also to have life in himself,

27 y también le dio autoridad de hacer juicio, por cuanto es el Hijo del Hombre.

and has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is Son of man.

28 N o se asombren de esto: Vendrá el tiempo cuando todos los que están en los sepulcros oirán su voz;

Wonder not at this, for an hour is coming in which all who are in the tombs shall hear his voice,

29 y los que hicieron lo bueno, saldrán a resurrección de vida; pero los que hicieron lo malo, a resurrección de condenación. Testigos de Cristo

and shall go forth; those that have practised good, to resurrection of life, and those that have done evil, to resurrection of judgment.

30 » Yo no puedo hacer nada por mí mismo. Yo juzgo según lo que oigo; y mi juicio es justo, porque no busco hacer mi voluntad, sino hacer la voluntad del que me envió.

I cannot do anything of myself; as I hear, I judge, and my judgment is righteous, because I do not seek my will, but the will of him that has sent me.

31 S i yo doy testimonio acerca de mí mismo, mi testimonio no es verdadero;

If I bear witness concerning myself, my witness is not true.

32 P ero el que da testimonio acerca de mí es otro, y yo sé que el testimonio que de mí da es verdadero.

It is another who bears witness concerning me, and I know that the witness which he bears concerning me is true.

33 U stedes enviaron mensajeros a Juan, y él dio testimonio de la verdad.

Ye have sent unto John, and he has borne witness to the truth.

34 Y o no recibo el testimonio de ningún hombre, sino que digo esto para que ustedes sean salvos.

But I do not receive witness from man, but I say this that ye might be saved.

35 J uan era una antorcha que ardía y alumbraba, y por algún tiempo ustedes quisieron regocijarse en su luz.

He was the burning and shining lamp, and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

36 P ero yo cuento con un testimonio mayor que el de Juan, y son las obras que el Padre me dio para que las llevara a cabo. Las obras mismas que yo hago son las que dan testimonio de mí, y de que el Padre me ha enviado.

But I have the witness greater than of John; for the works which the Father has given me that I should complete them, the works themselves which I do, bear witness concerning me that the Father has sent me.

37 T ambién el Padre, que me envió, ha dado testimonio de mí. Ustedes nunca han oído su voz, ni han visto su aspecto,

And the Father who has sent me himself has borne witness concerning me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor have seen his shape,

38 n i tienen su palabra permanentemente en ustedes, porque a quien él envió ustedes no le creen.

and ye have not his word abiding in you; for whom he hath sent, him ye do not believe.

39 U stedes escudriñan las Escrituras, porque les parece que en ellas tienen la vida eterna; ¡y son ellas las que dan testimonio de mí!

Ye search the scriptures, for ye think that in them ye have life eternal, and they it is which bear witness concerning me;

40 P ero ustedes no quieren venir a mí para que tengan vida.

and ye will not come to me that ye might have life.

41 Y o no recibo gloria de parte de los hombres.

I do not receive glory from men,

42 P ero yo los conozco a ustedes, y sé que el amor de Dios no habita en ustedes.

but I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.

43 Y o he venido en nombre de mi Padre, y ustedes no me reciben; pero si otro viniera en su propio nombre, a ése sí lo recibirían.

I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not; if another come in his own name, him ye will receive.

44 ¿ Y cómo pueden ustedes creer, si se honran los unos de los otros, pero no buscan la honra que viene del Dios único?

How can ye believe, who receive glory one of another, and seek not the glory which from God alone?

45 N o piensen que yo voy a acusarlos delante del Padre. Hay alguien que sí los acusa, y es Moisés, en quien ustedes tienen puesta su esperanza.

Think not that I will accuse you to the Father: there is who accuses you, Moses, on whom ye trust;

46 S i ustedes le creyeran a Moisés, me creerían a mí, porque él escribió acerca de mí.

for if ye had believed Moses, ye would have believed me, for he wrote of me.

47 P ero si no creen a sus escritos, ¿cómo van a creer a mis palabras?»

But if ye do not believe his writings, how shall ye believe my words?
