1 T odo el pueblo se reunió como un solo hombre en la plaza que está frente a la Puerta de las Aguas, y le rogaron al escriba Esdras que llevara el libro de la ley de Moisés, que el Señor le había dado al pueblo de Israel.

all the people gathered together as one man to the open place that was before the water-gate; and they spoke to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which Jehovah had commanded Israel.

2 E ra el día primero del mes séptimo del año. Entonces Esdras, que también era sacerdote, llevó el libro y lo mostró a todo el pueblo y a todos los que podían entender, lo mismo a hombres que a mujeres,

And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation, both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, on the first day of the seventh month.

3 y desde el alba hasta el medio día lo leyó en la plaza que está frente a la Puerta de las Aguas. Todo el pueblo escuchaba con mucha atención la lectura del libro de la ley,

And he read in it before the open place that was before the water-gate from the morning until midday, in presence of the men and the women, and those that could understand. And the ears of all the people were to the book of the law.

4 y para que todos escucharan mejor Esdras se subió a un estrado de madera hecho a propósito. A su derecha estaban Matatías, Semá, Anías, Urías, Hilcías y Maseías; a su izquierda estaban Pedaías, Misael, Malquías, Jasún, Jasbadana, Zacarías y Mesulán.

And Ezra the scribe stood upon a high stage of wood, which they had made for the purpose. And beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkijah, and Maaseiah on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchijah, and Hashum, and Hashbaddana, Zechariah, Meshullam.

5 E sdras abrió el libro ante todo el pueblo, y como él estaba por encima de los presentes, todos lo vieron y prestaron mucha atención

And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up.

6 E ntonces Esdras bendijo la grandeza del Señor, y el pueblo, con las manos hacia el cielo, respondió a una sola voz: «¡Amén! ¡Amén!» Luego, todos se inclinaron hasta el suelo y adoraron al Señor.

And Ezra blessed Jehovah, the great God; and all the people answered, Amen, Amen! with lifting up of their hands; and they bowed their heads, and worshipped Jehovah with their faces to the ground.

7 M ientras la ley era leída, los levitas Josué, Bani, Serebías, Jamín, Acub, Sabetay, Hodías, Maseías, Kelita, Azarías, Yozabad, Janán y Pelaía explicaban al pueblo la lectura, y el pueblo estaba tan interesado que no se movía de su lugar.

And Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law; and the people in their place.

8 Y es que la lectura de la ley se hacía con mucha claridad, y se recalcaba todo el sentido, de modo que el pueblo pudiera entender lo que escuchaba.

And they read in the law of God distinctly out of the book, and gave the sense, and caused to understand the reading.

9 C omo todo el pueblo lloraba al escuchar las palabras de la ley, el gobernador Nehemías, el sacerdote y escriba Esdras, y los levitas que explicaban al pueblo el sentido de la ley, dijeron: «Este día está consagrado al Señor, nuestro Dios. No hay razón para que lloren y se pongan tristes.»

And Nehemiah, that is, the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that explained to the people, said to all the people, This day is holy to Jehovah your God: mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept when they heard the words of the law.

10 T ambién dijeron: «Vayan y coman bien, y tomen un buen vino, pero compartan todo con los que nada tienen. Éste día está consagrado a nuestro Señor, así que no estén tristes. El gozo del Señor es nuestra fuerza.»

And he said to them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions to them for whom nothing is prepared; for the day is holy to our Lord; and be not grieved, for the joy of Jehovah is your strength.

11 T ambién los levitas animaban al pueblo y le decían: «Ya no lloren. No estén tristes, porque hoy es un día sagrado.»

And the Levites quieted all the people, saying, Be still! for the day is holy; neither be grieved.

12 E ntonces todo el pueblo se fue a comer y a beber, y a compartir su comida; y pasaron el día muy alegres, pues habían entendido las explicaciones que les habían dado.

And all the people went their way, to eat and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great rejoicing. For they had understood the words that were declared to them.

13 A l día siguiente, los jefes de familias de todo el pueblo, y los sacerdotes y los levitas, se reunieron con el escriba Esdras para que les explicara las palabras de la ley,

And on the second day were gathered together the chief fathers of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, to Ezra the scribe, even to gain wisdom as to the words of the law.

14 y en el libro que el Señor les había dado por medio de Moisés encontraron una ley, la cual decía que en el séptimo mes del año debía celebrarse una fiesta solemne, durante la cual todos los israelitas debían vivir siete días en tabernáculos.

And they found written in the law which Jehovah had commanded through Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month,

15 E sta ley debía pregonarse por todas las ciudades, y en Jerusalén, y la orden era: «Salgan a los montes y corten ramas de olivo silvestre, y ramas de arrayán, y hojas de palmeras y de todo árbol frondoso, y hagan unas cabañas, como está escrito.»

and that they should publish and proclaim through all their cities, and at Jerusalem, saying, Go forth to the mount, and fetch olive-branches, and wild olive-branches, and myrtle-branches, and palm-branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written.

16 E l pueblo salió a cortar ramas para hacer las cabañas. Algunos las hicieron en las azoteas de sus casas; otros las pusieron en sus patios, o en el patio del templo, o en la plaza de la Puerta de las Aguas, y hasta en la plaza de la Puerta de Efraín.

And the people went forth and brought, and made themselves booths, everyone upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the open space of the water-gate, and in the open space of the gate of Ephraim.

17 T odos los israelitas que habían vuelto del cautiverio armaron sus cabañas y durmieron allí, pues desde los días de Josué hijo de Nun hasta ese día no habían cumplido con este mandato, y ahora que lo cumplían sentían una gran alegría.

And all the congregation of them that had come back from the captivity made booths, and dwelt in the booths. For since the days of Jeshua the son of Nun until that day had not the children of Israel done so. And there was very great gladness.

18 D urante siete días celebraron la fiesta con toda solemnidad, y el octavo día se reunieron en una asamblea solemne, conforme a lo establecido. Y todos los días, desde el primero hasta el último, Esdras leía el libro de la ley de Dios.

Also day by day, from the first day to the last day, he read in the book of the law of God. And they observed the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according to the ordinance.
