1 O seas hijo de Elá tenía tres años de reinar sobre Israel cuando Ezequías hijo de Ajaz, comenzó a reinar sobre Judá.

And it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea the son of Elah, king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz, king of Judah, began to reign.

2 T enía entonces veinticinco años, y reinó veintinueve años en Jerusalén. Su madre se llamaba Abí, y era hija de Zacarías.

He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Abi, daughter of Zechariah.

3 E zequías hizo lo recto a los ojos del Señor, como antes lo había hecho David su padre.

And he did what was right in the sight of Jehovah, according to all that David his father had done.

4 Q uitó los altares de los montes y despedazó las imágenes, cortó los símbolos de Asera y destruyó la serpiente de bronce que había hecho Moisés, a la que hasta entonces los israelitas le quemaban incienso, y la llamó Nejustán.

He removed the high places, and broke the columns, and cut down the Asherahs, and broke in pieces the serpent of brass that Moses had made; for to those days the children of Israel burned incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan.

5 E zequías puso su esperanza en el Señor, Dios de Israel, y ni antes ni después de él hubo otro rey como él entre todos los reyes de Judá,

He trusted in Jehovah the God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor that were before him.

6 p ues siguió al Señor y no se apartó de él; al contrario, obedeció los mandamientos que el Señor le prescribió a Moisés.

And he clave to Jehovah, and did not turn aside from following him, but kept his commandments, which Jehovah commanded Moses.

7 E l Señor estaba con Ezequías. Adondequiera que él iba, tenía éxito. Se rebeló contra el rey de Asiria, y no se puso a su servicio.

And Jehovah was with him; he prospered whithersoever he went forth. And he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.

8 A demás, combatió a los filisteos hasta Gaza y sus fronteras, y desde las torres de las atalayas hasta la ciudad fortificada. Caída de Samaria

He smote the Philistines unto Gazah and its borders, from the watchmen's tower to the fortified city.

9 E n el séptimo año del reinado de Oseas hijo de Elá sobre Israel, que era el cuarto año del reinado del rey Ezequías de Judá, el rey Salmanasar de Asiria atacó la ciudad de Samaria y la sitió.

And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea the son of Elah, king of Israel, Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria and besieged it.

10 T res años después logró conquistarla. En el año sexto del reinado de Ezequías, que era el noveno año del reinado de Oseas sobre Israel, Samaria fue conquistada.

And at the end of three years they took it; in the sixth year of Hezekiah, that is, the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken.

11 E l rey de Asiria hizo prisioneros a los israelitas, y los llevó cautivos a Asiria. Los puso en las ciudades de Jalaj y Jabor, junto al río Gozán, y en las ciudades de los medos.

And the king of Assyria carried away Israel to Assyria, and settled them in Halah and by the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes;

12 Y es que los israelitas no obedecieron a la voz del Señor, su Dios, sino que faltaron a su pacto y a todo lo que había mandado Moisés, el siervo del Señor. No las obedecieron ni las pusieron por obra. Senaquerib invade a Judá

because they hearkened not to the voice of Jehovah their God, but transgressed his covenant, all that Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded; and they would not hear nor do it.

13 E n el año catorce del reinado de Ezequías, el rey Senaquerib de Asiria atacó todas las ciudades fortificadas de Judá, y las conquistó.

And in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah, and took them.

14 Y el rey Ezequías de Judá envió a decirle al rey de Asiria, que estaba en Laquis: «He pecado. Aléjate de mí, y yo haré todo lo que me impongas.» El rey de Asiria impuso al rey Ezequías de Judá un tributo de nueve mil novecientos kilos de plata y novecientos noventa kilos de oro,

And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, I have sinned; retire from me: I will bear what thou layest upon me. And the king of Assyria laid upon Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.

15 y Ezequías entregó toda la plata que había en el templo del Señor y en los tesoros del palacio real.

And Hezekiah gave all the silver that was found in the house of Jehovah, and in the treasures of the king's house.

16 A demás, removió el oro de las puertas y quiciales del templo del Señor, que el mismo rey Ezequías había recubierto de oro, y se lo entregó al rey de Asiria.

At that time Hezekiah stripped the doors of the temple of Jehovah, and the posts that Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave them to the king of Assyria.

17 D espués el rey de Asiria envió desde Laquis un gran ejército contra el rey Ezequías. Venía comandado por el Tartán, el Rabsaris y el Rabsaces, y éstos vinieron y atacaron a Jerusalén. Cuando llegaron, acamparon junto al acueducto del estanque de arriba, en dirección al Campo del Lavador.

And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rabsaris and Rab-shakeh from Lachish, with a strong force, against king Hezekiah, to Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they were come up, they came and stood by the aqueduct of the upper pool, which is on the highway of the fuller's field.

18 A llí, llamaron al rey, pero salieron a hablar con ellos el mayordomo Eliaquín hijo de Hilcías, el escriba Sebna, y el canciller Yoaj hijo de Asaf.

And they called to the king. Then came forth to them Eliakim the son of Hilkijah, who was over the household, and Shebnah the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph, the chronicler.

19 Y el Rabsaces les dijo: «Vayan y díganle a Ezequías que así dice el gran rey de Asiria: “¿Qué base tienes para estar tan confiado?

And Rab-shakeh said to them, Say now to Hezekiah, Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?

20 S in base alguna, aseguras contar con planes y fuerzas para declararme la guerra. ¿Pero cuál es tu apoyo para rebelarte contra mí?

Thou sayest—but it is a word of the lips—There is counsel and strength for war. Now on whom dost thou rely, that thou hast revolted against me?

21 T ú confías en Egipto, que no es más que un roto bastón de caña. Si te apoyas en ese bastón, acabarás con la mano atravesada. Eso es el faraón, el rey de Egipto, para todos los que en él confían.

Now behold, thou reliest upon the staff of that broken reed, upon Egypt, on which if a man lean, it goes into his hand and pierces it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that rely upon him.

22 Y si ustedes me dicen que confían en el Señor, su Dios, ¿acaso no es el mismo Dios cuyos altares Ezequías quitó, ordenando a Judá y a Jerusalén adorar solamente delante del altar de Jerusalén, que él mando hacer?”

And if ye say to me, We rely upon Jehovah our God: is it not he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?

23 » Ezequías, yo te sugiero que le des rehenes a mi señor, el rey de Asiria, que ha dicho: “Yo te daré dos mil caballos, si tú tienes otros tantos jinetes para que los monten.”

And now, engage, I pray thee, with my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou canst set the riders upon them.

24 A unque confíes en Egipto, y en sus carros de guerra y en su caballería, no podrás hacerle frente al menor de los capitanes de mi señor,

How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants? And thou reliest upon Egypt for chariots and for horsemen!

25 ¿ Acaso crees que he venido aquí sin que el Señor me haya ordenado destruirlo? El Señor me ha dicho: “Ataca a ese país y destrúyelo.”»

Am I now come up without Jehovah against this place to destroy it? Jehovah said to me, Go up against this land and destroy it.

26 E liaquín hijo de Hilcías, y Sebna y Yoaj, le dijeron al Rabsaces: «Por favor, háblanos en arameo, que nosotros lo entendemos. No nos hables en la lengua de Judá, que el pueblo que está sobre la muralla te va a escuchar.»

And Eliakim the son of Hilkijah, and Shebnah and Joah said to Rab-shakeh, Speak, we pray thee, to thy servants in Syriac, for we understand it, and talk not with us in the Jewish in the ears of the people that are on the wall.

27 P ero el Rabsaces les contestó: «¿Y acaso mi señor me ha enviado a decirles esto a ustedes y a su amo, y no a la gente que está sobre la muralla, expuestos como están a comerse, lo mismo que ustedes, su propio excremento y a beberse su propia orina?»

And Rab-shakeh said to them, Is it to thy master and to thee that my master sent me to speak these words? Is it not to the men that sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?

28 D icho esto, el Rabsaces se levantó y en la lengua de Judá clamó a gran voz: «¡Escuchen las palabras del gran rey de Asiria!

And Rab-shakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jewish, and spoke and said, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria!

29 A sí ha dicho el rey: “No se dejen engañar por Ezequías, porque él no podrá librarlos de mi mano.

Thus says the king: Let not Hezekiah deceive you; for he will not be able to deliver you out of the hand.

30 N o dejen que Ezequías los haga confiar en el Señor, aunque les asegure que el Señor los salvará, y que esta ciudad no será entregada en mis manos.

Neither let Hezekiah make you rely upon Jehovah, saying, Jehovah will certainly deliver us, and this city shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.

31 N o le hagan caso.” »Así dice el rey de Asiria: “Hagan las paces conmigo, y salgan a mi encuentro. Coma cada uno de ustedes sus uvas y sus higos; beba cada uno de ustedes el agua de su pozo,

Hearken not to Hezekiah; for thus says the king of Assyria: Make peace with me, and come out to me; and eat every one of his vine and every one of his fig-tree, and drink every one the waters of his own cistern;

32 h asta que yo venga y los lleve a una tierra como la de ustedes, donde hay trigo y vino, pan y viñas, olivas, aceite y miel. Así no morirán, sino que seguirán con vida. No le hagan caso a Ezequías, que los engaña cuando les dice que el Señor los librará.

until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive-trees and of honey, that ye may live and not die; and hearken not to Hezekiah, when he persuades you, saying, Jehovah will deliver us.

33 ¿ Acaso alguno de los dioses de las otras naciones ha librado a su tierra de mis manos?

Have any of the gods of the nations delivered at all his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

34 ¿ Dónde están los dioses de Jamat y de Arfad? ¿Dónde están los dioses de Sefarvayin, Hena, y Guivá? ¿Acaso esos dioses pudieron librar a Samaria de mi mano?

Where are the gods of Hamath and of Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?

35 ¿ Qué dios de todos los dioses de estas tierras ha librado de mi poder a su país, para que el Señor libre de mi mano a Jerusalén?”»

Which are they among all the gods of the countries, who have delivered their country out of my hand, that Jehovah should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?

36 P ero el pueblo guardó silencio y no respondió nada, porque el rey había dado órdenes de no responderle.

But the people were silent and answered him not a word; for the king's command was, saying, Answer him not.

37 L uego, el mayordomo Eliaquín hijo de Hilcías, el escriba Sebna y el canciller Yoaj hijo de Asaf fueron a ver a Ezequías, y con sus vestiduras rasgadas repitieron lo dicho por el Rabsaces.

And Eliakim the son of Hilkijah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph, the chronicler, came to Hezekiah with their garments rent, and told him the words of Rab-shakeh.
