1 R oboán fue a Siquén porque todo el pueblo de Israel estaba reunido allí para proclamarlo rey.

And Rehoboam went to Shechem; for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.

2 C uando Jeroboán hijo de Nabat, que por la furia del rey Salomón había huido a Egipto, supo esto,

And it came to pass when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard it (now he was yet in Egypt, whither he had fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;

3 s us seguidores le pidieron volver. Al llegar Jeroboán, él y todo el pueblo se presentaron ante Roboán y le dijeron:

and they sent and called him), that Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,

4 « Tu padre fue muy duro con nosotros. Te rogamos que disminuyas un poco la servidumbre a la que Salomón nos sometió. Aligera el yugo tan pesado que nos impuso, y nos pondremos a tu servicio.»

Thy father made our yoke grievous; and now lighten thou the grievous servitude of thy father and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.

5 P ero Roboán les dijo: «Por el momento, váyanse y vuelvan a verme dentro de tres días.» En cuanto ellos se fueron,

And he said to them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.

6 R oboán pidió consejo a los ancianos que cuando Salomón vivía habían estado a su servicio. Les dijo: «¿Qué respuesta me aconsejan dar a esta gente?»

And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, How do ye advise to return answer to this people?

7 L os ancianos le dijeron: «Si hoy te pones al servicio del pueblo y le hablas de buena manera, ellos serán siempre tus servidores.»

And they spoke to him saying, If this day thou wilt be a servant to this people, and wilt serve them and answer them and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever.

8 P ero Roboán hizo a un lado el consejo de los ancianos, y pidió el consejo de los jóvenes que habían crecido con él y estaban a su servicio: Les preguntó:

But he forsook the advice of the old men which they had given him, and consulted with the young men, who had grown up with him, that stood before him.

9 « ¿Qué me aconsejan responder a esta gente que vino a decirme: “Disminuye un poco la servidumbre que tu padre nos impuso”?»

And he said to them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people who have spoken to me saying, Lighten the yoke which thy father put upon us?

10 Y los jóvenes que habían crecido con él le dijeron: «A esa gente que te habló de esa manera, y que dijo: “Tu padre fue muy duro con nosotros. Disminuye un poco esa dureza”, diles: “Mi dedo meñique es más grueso que el miembro viril de mi padre.

And the young men that had grown up with him spoke to him saying, Thus shalt thou say to this people that have spoken to thee saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, and lighten thou it for us,—thus shalt thou say to them: My little is thicker than my father's loins;

11 A sí que, si mi padre fue duro con ustedes, yo lo seré más todavía; si mi padre los castigó con azotes, yo los azotaré con látigos.”»

and whereas my father laid a heavy yoke upon you, I will add to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

12 A l tercer día, Jeroboán y todo el pueblo se presentaron ante el rey Roboán para conocer su respuesta, tal y como él les había dicho.

And Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed saying, Come again to me on the third day.

13 Y el rey les habló con dureza, pues no hizo caso del consejo de los ancianos;

And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the advice of the old men which they had given him;

14 a l contrario, les repitió lo que los jóvenes le habían aconsejado: «Si mi padre fue duro con ustedes, yo seré aún más duro; si mi padre los castigó con azotes, yo los azotaré con látigos.»

and he spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

15 Y Roboán no quiso escuchar al pueblo porque ya el Señor así lo había dispuesto, para confirmar lo que había dicho a Jeroboán hijo de Nabat por medio de Ajías el silonita.

So the king hearkened not to the people; for it was brought about by Jehovah, that he might give effect to his word, which Jehovah spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

16 A l ver el pueblo que el rey no les había hecho caso, exclamaron: «¿Qué tenemos nosotros que ver con David? ¡No tenemos nada que ver con el hijo de Yesé! Pueblo de Israel, ¡regresa a tus casas! Y tú, David, ¡busca tu propio sustento!» Fue así como el pueblo de Israel regresó a sus casas,

And all Israel saw that the king hearkened not to them; and the people answered the king saying, What portion have we in David? And no inheritance in the son of Jesse: To your tents, O Israel! Now see to thine own house, David! And Israel went to their tents.

17 y Roboán siguió reinando sobre los israelitas que vivían en las ciudades de Judá.

But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

18 Y cuando Roboán envió a Adorán a cobrar los tributos para el rey, el pueblo de Israel lo apedreó hasta matarlo. Entonces el rey Roboán subió en su carro y salió huyendo hacia Jerusalén.

And king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the levy; but all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. And king Rehoboam hastened to mount his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.

19 A sí fue como el pueblo de Israel se separó de la casa de David, hasta el día de hoy.

And Israel rebelled against the house of David, unto this day.

20 Y cuando los israelitas se enteraron de que Jeroboán había vuelto, todo el pueblo mandó a llamarlo para proclamarlo rey de Israel, y aparte de la tribu de Judá, ninguna otra tribu se sometió a la línea de David.

And it came to pass when all Israel heard that Jeroboam had come back, that they sent and called him to the assembly, and made him king over all Israel: none followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.

21 A l llegar a Jerusalén, Roboán reunió a los descendientes de Judá y de Benjamín, y escogió a los ciento ochenta mil mejores guerreros para ir y pelear contra los israelitas, pues quería recuperar el reino de Salomón.

And Rehoboam came to Jerusalem; and he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, a hundred and eighty thousand chosen men apt for war, to fight against the house of Israel, that he might bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.

22 P ero la palabra del Señor vino a Semaías, varón de Dios, y le dijo:

But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,

23 « Habla con Roboán, el hijo de Salomón, y con las tribus de Judá y de Benjamín, y con el resto del pueblo, y diles:

Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remainder of the people, saying,

24 “ Así ha dicho el Señor: No vayan a pelear contra sus hermanos israelitas. Regresen a sus casas, porque esto lo he provocado yo.”» Y los dos bandos hicieron caso de las palabras del Señor, y en conformidad con ellas regresaron a sus casas. El pecado de Jeroboán

Thus saith Jehovah: Go not up, nor fight with your brethren, the children of Israel; return every man to his house, for this thing is from me. And they hearkened to the word of Jehovah, and returned to depart, according to the word of Jehovah.

25 E ntonces Jeroboán reedificó la ciudad de Siquén, en la ladera del monte Efraín, y allí se quedó a vivir, aunque luego salió de allí y reconstruyó Penuel.

And Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel.

26 P ero dentro de sí mismo pensaba: «El reino puede regresar a la casa de David

And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David.

27 s i el pueblo sigue yendo a ofrecer sacrificios al templo del Señor en Jerusalén. Entonces volverán a someterse voluntariamente a Roboán, rey de Judá, y a mí me matarán.»

If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of Jehovah at Jerusalem, the heart of this people will turn again to their lord, to Rehoboam king of Judah, and they will kill me, and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.

28 D espués de reunirse en consejo, Jeroboán mandó hacer dos becerros de oro y le dijo al pueblo: «Israelitas, demasiadas veces han ido ustedes a Jerusalén. ¡Aquí tienen a los dioses que los sacaron de Egipto!»

And the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold. And he said to them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt!

29 U no de los becerros lo colocó en Betel, y el otro en Dan.

And he set the one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan.

30 E sto incitó al pueblo a pecar, porque iba a Dan a adorar el becerro.

And this thing became a sin; and the people went before the one, as far as Dan.

31 A demás, Jeroboán mandó construir altares en los montes y nombró sacerdotes de entre el pueblo, aunque no fueran descendientes de Leví.

And he made a house of high places, and made priests from all classes of the people, who were not of the sons of Levi.

32 T ambién instituyó una fiesta solemne el día quince del mes octavo, semejante a la que era celebrada en Judá, y ofrecía sacrificios en el altar que construyó en Betel y nombró sacerdotes para que oficiaran en los altares que había mandado construir.

And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like the feast that was in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he had made; and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he had made.

33 L a fiesta religiosa que instituyó el día quince del mes octavo, fue una invención suya, y todo el pueblo participó en ella, y Jeroboán subió al altar para quemar incienso.

And he offered upon the altar that he had made in Bethel, on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and he made a feast for the children of Israel, and he offered upon the altar, burning incense.
