1 M ientras Apolos estaba en Corinto, Pablo estuvo recorriendo las regiones altas. Y sucedió que, cuando llegó a Éfeso, se encontró con algunos discípulos

And it came to pass, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper districts, came to Ephesus, and finding certain disciples,

2 y les preguntó: «¿Ustedes recibieron el Espíritu Santo cuando creyeron en el Señor Jesús?» Y ellos respondieron: «No, ¡ni siquiera habíamos oído hablar del Espíritu Santo!»

he said to them, Did ye receive Holy Spirit when ye had believed? And they to him, We did not even hear if Holy Spirit was.

3 P ablo les preguntó entonces: «¿Pues qué enseñanza recibieron al ser bautizados?» Y ellos respondieron: «La del bautismo de Juan.»

And he said, To what then were ye baptised? And they said, To the baptism of John.

4 P ablo les dijo: «El bautismo de Juan enseñaba el arrepentimiento. Le decía al pueblo que tenía que creer en el que vendría después de él, es decir, en Jesús.»

And Paul said, John indeed baptised the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on him that was coming after him, that is, on Jesus.

5 A l oír esto, pidieron ser bautizados en el nombre del Señor Jesús.

And when they heard that, they were baptised to the name of the Lord Jesus.

6 C uando Pablo les impuso las manos sobre la cabeza, el Espíritu Santo vino sobre ellos, y empezaron a hablar en lenguas y a profetizar.

And Paul having laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.

7 E ran doce hombres en total.

And all the men were about twelve.

8 D urante tres meses Pablo estuvo yendo a la sinagoga, y allí predicaba sin ningún temor, y trataba de convencer a sus oyentes acerca del reino de Dios.

And entering into the synagogue, he spoke boldly during three months, reasoning and persuading concerning the kingdom of God.

9 P ero algunos de ellos no creyeron, y delante de toda la gente hablaron mal del Camino. Entonces Pablo juntó a unos discípulos y se apartó de ellos; pero todos los días debatía en la escuela de Tiranno.

But when some were hardened and disbelieved, speaking evil of the way before the multitude, he left them and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.

10 E sto se prolongó durante dos años, así que muchos de los judíos y griegos que vivían en la provincia de Asia llegaron a oír la palabra del Señor.

And this took place for two years, so that all that inhabited Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.

11 D ios, por medio de Pablo, hacía milagros tan extraordinarios

And God wrought no ordinary miracles by the hands of Paul,

12 q ue muchos le llevaban los paños o delantales de los enfermos, y las enfermedades desaparecían y la gente quedaba libre de espíritus malignos.

so that even napkins or aprons were brought from his body upon the sick, and the diseases left them, and the wicked spirits went out.

13 A ndaban por ahí algunos judíos exorcistas, que intentaban invocar el nombre del Señor Jesús sobre los que tenían espíritus malignos. Les decían: «En el nombre de Jesús, a quien Pablo predica, les ordenamos salir.»

And certain of the Jewish exorcists also, who went about, took in hand to call upon those who had wicked spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, I adjure you by Jesus, whom Paul preaches.

14 L os que hacían esto eran los siete hijos de un judío llamado Esceva, que era jefe de los sacerdotes;

And there were certain, seven sons of Sceva, Jewish high priest, who were doing this.

15 p ero el espíritu maligno les respondió: «Yo sé quién es Jesús, y sé también quién es Pablo; pero ustedes, ¿quiénes son?»

But the wicked spirit answering said to them, Jesus I know, and Paul I am acquainted with; but ye, who are ye?

16 D icho esto, el hombre que tenía el espíritu malo se arrojó sobre ellos; y los derribó con tanta fuerza que los hizo huir desnudos y heridos.

And the man in whom the wicked spirit was leaped upon them, and having mastered both, prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

17 E sto lo supieron todos los habitantes de Éfeso, tanto judíos como griegos, y les entró mucho temor, pero magnificaban el nombre del Señor Jesús.

And this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who inhabited Ephesus, and fear fell upon all of them, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

18 M uchos de los que habían creído venían y confesaban sus malas prácticas.

And many of those that believed came confessing and declaring their deeds.

19 D e igual manera, muchos de los que practicaban la magia llevaron sus libros y los quemaron delante de todos. ¡Y el precio de esos libros era de cincuenta mil piezas de plata!

And many of those that practised curious arts brought their books and burnt them before all. And they reckoned up the prices of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.

20 Y fue así como la palabra del Señor fue extendiéndose y difundiéndose con mucha fuerza.

Thus with might the word of the Lord increased and prevailed.

21 C uando Pablo vio esto, le pareció que luego de visitar Macedonia y Acaya debía ir a Jerusalén. Decía: «Después de estar allí, tengo que ir a Roma y ver qué pasa allá.»

And when these things were fulfilled, Paul purposed in his spirit to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia, saying, After I have been there I must see Rome also.

22 E nvió entonces a Macedonia a Timoteo y Erasto, que eran dos de sus ayudantes, pero él se quedó por algún tiempo en Asia. El alboroto en Éfeso

And having sent into Macedonia two of those ministering to him, Timotheus and Erastus, he remained himself awhile in Asia.

23 P or esos días hubo un gran disturbio por causa de las enseñanzas del Camino.

And there took place at that time no small disturbance about the way.

24 R esulta que un platero llamado Demetrio hacía réplicas en plata del templo de la diosa Diana, con lo cual ganaban mucho dinero los artífices.

For a certain by name Demetrius, a silver-beater, making silver temples of Artemis, brought no small gain to the artisans;

25 D emetrio reunió a los obreros y les dijo: «Amigos míos, ustedes saben que este oficio es para nosotros una buena fuente de ingresos.

whom having brought together, and those who wrought in such things, he said, Men, ye know that our well-living arises from this work,

26 P ero como han visto y sabido, Pablo ha persuadido a mucha gente de que no son dioses los que hacemos con nuestras manos. De esto ha convencido a mucha gente, no sólo en Éfeso sino en casi toda Asia.

and ye see and hear that this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great crowd, not only of Ephesus, but almost of all Asia, saying that they are no gods which are made with hands.

27 E sto no sólo desacredita y pone en peligro nuestro negocio, sino también al templo de la gran diosa Diana, que es venerada en toda la provincia de Asia y en el mundo entero. ¡Esto la despoja de su divinidad y majestad!»

Now not only there is danger for us that our business come into discredit, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis be counted for nothing, and that her greatness should be destroyed whom the whole of Asia and the world reveres.

28 C uando los artesanos oyeron esto, se llenaron de ira y gritaron: «¡Grande es Diana de los efesios!»

And having heard, and being filled with rage, they cried out, saying, Great Artemis of the Ephesians.

29 L a ciudad entera se llenó de confusión, así que todos se fueron al teatro y se llevaron a rastras a Gayo y Aristarco, los compañeros macedonios de Pablo.

And the city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord to the theatre, having seized and carried off with Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, fellow-travellers of Paul.

30 P ablo intentó enfrentarse al pueblo, pero los discípulos no lo dejaron.

But Paul intending to go in to the people, the disciples suffered him not;

31 T ambién algunas de las autoridades de Asia, que eran sus amigos, le enviaron un mensaje, en el que le rogaban que no se presentara en el teatro.

and some of the Asiarchs also, who were his friends, sent to him and urged him not to throw himself into the theatre.

32 E ra tal la confusión entre la concurrencia que unos gritaban una cosa, y otros, otra; aunque la mayoría no sabía para qué se habían reunido.

Different persons therefore cried out some different thing; for the assembly was tumultuous, and the most did not know for what cause they had come together.

33 D e entre la multitud, los judíos sacaron a empujones a un tal Alejandro, que a señas pidió silencio, pues quería presentar su defensa ante el pueblo;

But from among the crowd they put forward Alexander, the Jews pushing him forward. And Alexander, beckoning with his hand, would have made a defence to the people.

34 p ero cuando supieron que era judío, todos a una voz gritaron durante casi dos horas: «¡Grande es Diana de los efesios!»

But, recognising that he was a Jew, there was one cry from all, shouting for about two hours, Great Artemis of the Ephesians.

35 U na vez que la multitud se apaciguó, el escribano dijo: «Varones efesios, ¿quién no sabe que la ciudad de Éfeso es guardiana del templo de la gran diosa Diana, y de la imagen que cayó del cielo?

And the townclerk, having quieted the crowd, said, Ephesians, what man is there then who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of Artemis the great, and of the which fell down from heaven?

36 E sto nadie lo puede contradecir. Lo que ustedes deben hacer es calmarse y no actuar con precipitación.

These things therefore being undeniable, it is necessary that ye should be calm and do nothing headlong.

37 H an traído ustedes a estos hombres, que no han profanado ni ofendido a nuestra diosa.

For ye have brought these men, neither temple-plunderers, nor speak injuriously of your goddess.

38 S i Demetrio y sus artífices tienen motivo de queja contra alguno, tenemos tribunales, y también procónsules. Ante ellos pueden presentar su acusación.

If therefore Demetrius and the artisans who with him have a matter against any one, the courts are being held, and there are proconsuls: let them accuse one another.

39 Y si tienen alguna otra demanda, eso puede resolverse en una asamblea legalmente constituida.

But if ye inquire anything concerning other matters, it will be settled in the regular assembly.

40 P or sucesos como el de hoy, corremos el riesgo de que se nos acuse de sedición, ya que nada justifica una reunión como ésta.»

For also we are in danger to be put in accusation for sedition for this of to-day, no cause existing in reference to which we shall be able to give a reason for this concourse.

41 D icho esto, el escribano disolvió la asamblea.

And having said these things, he dismissed the assembly.
