1 C uando Adonisedec, el rey de Jerusalén, supo que Josué había tomado la ciudad de Hai, y que la había dejado en ruinas (como lo había hecho con Jericó y con su rey, lo mismo que con Hai), y que los habitantes de Gabaón habían hecho la paz con los israelitas y que vivían entre ellos,

And it came to pass when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and had utterly destroyed it, that he had done to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them,

2 s e llenó de temor. Y es que Gabaón era una ciudad real, mucho más grande que Hai, y sus hombres eran muy fuertes.

that they feared greatly; for Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty.

3 P or eso el rey Adonisedec envió mensajes a Hoán, Pirán, Jafía y Debir, que eran los reyes de Hebrón, Jarmut, Laquis y Eglón, en ese orden, en los que les decía:

And Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, and to Piream king of Jarmuth, and to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying,

4 « Vengan en mi ayuda. Vamos a combatir a Gabaón, porque ha hecho una alianza de paz con Josué y con el pueblo de Israel.»

Come up to me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon; for it has made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.

5 E ntonces los reyes de Jerusalén, Hebrón, Jarmut, Laquis y Eglón, que eran los cinco reyes de los amorreos, se aliaron y con todos sus ejércitos fueron y acamparon cerca de Gabaón, para pelear contra ella.

And the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their armies, and they encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.

6 P or su parte, los habitantes de Gabaón enviaron mensajeros al campamento de Josué en Gilgal, para decirle: «No nos niegues tu ayuda, pues somos tus siervos. Ven pronto a defendernos, pues todos los reyes de los amorreos, que habitan en las montañas, se han aliado contra nosotros.»

And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua, to the camp at Gilgal, saying, Withdraw not thy hand from thy servants: come up to us quickly, and save us and help us; for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the hill-country are gathered against us.

7 J osué salió entonces de Gilgal con su ejército de guerreros y con sus hombres más aguerridos.

So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, even all the valiant men.

8 Y el Señor le dijo a Josué: «No les tengas miedo, que yo te los he entregado. Ninguno de ellos podrá vencerte.»

And Jehovah said to Joshua, Fear them not; for into thy hand have I given them: not a man of them shall stand before thee.

9 J osué avanzó toda esa noche desde Gilgal, y les cayó por sorpresa.

And Joshua came upon them suddenly; he went up from Gilgal all night.

10 C uando los reyes vieron al pueblo de Israel, el Señor hizo que ellos se llenaran de gran aflicción, y así el Señor los hirió de muerte en Gabaón y los persiguió por el camino que lleva a Bet Jorón, y hasta Azeca y Maceda.

And Jehovah discomfited them before Israel, and smote them a great slaughter at Gibeon; and he chased them on the way of the ascent of Beth-horon, and smote them up to Azekah and Makkedah.

11 M ientras estos reyes huían de los israelitas, el Señor hizo que en la bajada de Bet Jorón, y hasta Azeca, cayeran granizos tan grandes como piedras, y muchos murieron. Fueron más los que murieron por causa del granizo que los que los hijos de Israel mataron a filo de espada.

And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel,—they were at the descent of Beth-horon,—that Jehovah cast down great stones from heaven upon them up to Azekah, and they died. They were more who died with the hailstones than they whom the children of Israel had slain with the sword.

12 E l día en que los amorreos fueron vencidos, Josué le habló al Señor en presencia de los israelitas, y dijo: «Sol, deténte en Gabaón; Y tú, luna, en el valle de Ayalón.

Then spoke Joshua to Jehovah in the day when Jehovah gave up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand still upon Gibeon; And thou, moon, in the valley of Ajalon!

13 Y el sol y la luna se detuvieron. Y el pueblo se vengó de sus enemigos.» ¿Acaso esto no está escrito en el libro de Jaser? El sol se detuvo en medio del cielo, y durante casi un día entero no se apresuró a ocultarse.

And the sun stood still, and the moon remained where it was, until the nation had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? And the sun remained standing in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a full day.

14 N unca antes hubo un día como ése, ni lo habrá después, en que el Señor atendió a la voz de un hombre y peleó a favor de Israel, su pueblo.

And there was no day like that before it or after it, that Jehovah hearkened to the voice of a man; for Jehovah fought for Israel.

15 D espués de esto, Josué y el pueblo de Israel volvieron al campamento en Gilgal.

And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp, to Gilgal.

16 L os cinco reyes huyeron y se escondieron en una cueva en Maceda,

And these five kings fled, and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah.

17 p ero cuando le avisaron a Josué que habían hallado a los cinco reyes escondidos en esa cueva,

And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings have been found, hid in the cave at Makkedah.

18 d ijo: «Tapen la entrada de la cueva con grandes piedras, y pongan guardias frente a ella.

And Joshua said, Roll great stones before the mouth of the cave, and set men before it to keep them.

19 Y ustedes, no se detengan; sigan a sus enemigos y atáquenlos por la retaguardia. No los dejen entrar a sus ciudades, porque el Señor nuestro Dios los ha entregado en sus manos.»

And ye, stay not, pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities; for Jehovah your God has given them into your hand.

20 J osué y el pueblo de Israel hirieron a los amorreos hasta destruirlos, pero algunos de ellos lograron entrar en las ciudades fortificadas.

And it came to pass when Joshua and the children of Israel had ended smiting them with a very great slaughter, until they were consumed, that the remnant which remained of them entered into fortified cities;

21 D espués, todo el pueblo volvió sano y salvo al campamento en Maceda, donde estaba Josué, y no hubo nadie que hablara mal de los hijos de Israel.

and all the people returned to the camp to Joshua, at Makkedah, in peace; none moved his tongue against the children of Israel.

22 E ntonces Josué dijo: «Abran la entrada de la cueva donde están los cinco reyes amorreos, y sáquenlos.»

And Joshua said, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring forth to me those five kings out of the cave.

23 A sí lo hicieron, y sacaron a los reyes de Jerusalén, Hebrón, Jarmut, Laquis y Eglón,

And they did so, and brought forth to him those five kings out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon.

24 y los llevaron ante Josué. Entonces él llamó a todos los hombres de Israel y a los jefes de los guerreros que lo habían acompañado, y les dijo: «Pongan sus pies sobre el cuello de estos reyes.» Ellos se acercaron y se pararon sobre su cuello,

And it came to pass when they had brought forth those kings to Joshua, that Joshua called to all the men of Israel, and said to the captains of the men of war who went with him, Come forward, put your feet on the necks of these kings. And they came forward and put their feet on their necks.

25 y entonces Josué les dijo: «No tengan miedo. No se atemoricen, sino sean fuertes y valientes, porque así hará el Señor con todos sus enemigos, contra quienes ustedes peleen.»

And Joshua said to them, Fear not, neither be dismayed; be strong and courageous, for thus will Jehovah do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.

26 D espués de eso, Josué los hirió de muerte e hizo que los colgaran en cinco árboles, en donde se quedaron colgados hasta que cayó la noche.

And afterwards Joshua smote them, and put them to death, and hanged them on five trees; and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.

27 C uando el sol estaba por ocultarse, mandó que los bajaran de los árboles y que los arrojaran dentro de la cueva donde se habían ocultado; luego se tapó la entrada de la cueva con grandes piedras, y éstas permanecen hasta el día de hoy.

And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave where they had been hid, and laid great stones before the cave's mouth, to this very day.

28 E se mismo día Josué tomó Maceda y mató a su rey y a sus habitantes a filo de espada. Los destruyó por completo, y arrasó con todo lo que tenía vida; hizo con el rey de Maceda lo mismo que había hecho con el rey de Jericó.

And Joshua took Makkedah on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, him and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed; he let none remain; and he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.

29 L uego Josué y el pueblo de Israel salieron de Maceda y fueron a pelear contra Libna,

And Joshua passed, and all Israel with him, from Makkedah to Libnah, and fought against Libnah.

30 y el Señor también la entregó en sus manos, junto con su rey, y mataron a filo de espada todo lo que tenía vida, como antes lo había hecho con el rey de Jericó.

And Jehovah gave it also and the king thereof into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it: and he did to the king thereof as he had done to the king of Jericho.

31 D espués salieron de Libna y se dirigieron a Laquis, y acamparon cerca de ella y también la combatieron.

And Joshua passed, and all Israel with him, from Libnah to Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it.

32 A l día siguiente el Señor entregó a Laquis en manos de Israel, y la tomaron y mataron a filo de espada todo lo que tenía vida, como antes lo había hecho con el rey de Libna.

And Jehovah gave Lachish into the hand of Israel; and they took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.

33 H orán, el rey de Guézer, fue en ayuda de Laquis, pero él y su pueblo fueron derrotados por Josué, y ni uno solo de ellos quedó con vida.

Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.

34 D e Laquis, Josué y todo Israel pasaron a Eglón y acamparon cerca de allí, y también la combatieron.

And Joshua, and all Israel with him, passed from Lachish to Eglon; and they encamped against it, and fought against it.

35 E se mismo día la tomaron, y mataron a filo de espada todo lo que tenía vida, como lo hicieron en Laquis.

And they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword; and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed on that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.

36 D espués salieron de Eglón para combatir a Hebrón,

And Joshua went up, and all Israel with him, from Eglon to Hebron; and they fought against it.

37 y ese mismo día la tomaron, matando a filo de espada a su rey y a sus habitantes, y a todo lo que tenía vida, como antes lo habían hecho con Eglón. Nada quedó con vida.

And they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein: he let none remain, according to all that he had done to Eglon; and he utterly destroyed it, and all the souls that were therein.

38 C uando Josué y el pueblo de Israel volvieron, se dirigieron a Debir para atacarla,

And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it.

39 y la tomaron junto con su rey y sus ciudades, matando a filo de espada todo lo que tenía vida, como antes lo habían hecho con los reyes de Hebrón y Libna.

And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: as he had done to Hebron, and as he had done to Libnah, and to the king thereof, so he did to Debir and to the king thereof.

40 A demás, Josué asoló toda la región montañosa del Néguev, los llanos y las laderas, y mató a todos sus reyes. Tal y como el Señor Dios de Israel lo había ordenado, no dejó nada con vida:

And Joshua smote the whole country, the mountain, and the south, and the lowland, and the hill-slopes, and all their kings: he let none remain, but he utterly destroyed all that breathed, as Jehovah the God of Israel had commanded.

41 d esde Cadés Barnea hasta Gaza, y por toda la tierra de Gosén hasta Gabaón, mató a los reyes de esos lugares

And Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea even to Gazah, and all the country of Goshen, even to Gibeon;

42 y tomó posesión de sus tierras porque el Señor y Dios de Israel peleaba en su favor.

and all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time; for Jehovah the God of Israel fought for Israel.

43 D espués, Josué y todo el pueblo de Israel volvieron a su campamento en Gilgal.

And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp, to Gilgal.
